In short (whole book)

Val accepts a lucrative bodyguard job from technology entrepreneur Bernard Weber just as vampires vanish and suspicion falls on her. Weber's wards, secret tracking service, and concealed property gradually connect him to the disappearances. Zav delays the investigation by forcing Val to the elven world, but the trip gains her recognition from her royal father and instruction in mental defense. After Dimitri is abducted, Val follows Way Rover orcs to Weber's underground laboratory, where Weber and a scientist are pursuing longevity through captive vampires, Dimitri, and tissue from a stolen dragon egg. Val frees the prisoners, defeats the orcs, and returns the egg, preventing a dragon clan war. Weber dies, while the scientist escapes. Val proves she can resist a dragon's compulsion, agrees to share a protected house with Dimitri and her elven teacher, and prepares for possible Dragon Justice Court intervention on Earth.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Val Thorvald, a half-elf Army investigator, has become closely entangled with dragons while defending Earth from magical threats. The dragon Zav has marked her and regards her as his claimed mate, but Val will not accept a relationship while dragon magic can override her judgment. She needs instruction from her elven kin to defend her mind. Her magical tiger ally Sindari remains bound to assist her through a figurine-linked obligation. Val's family life is also unsettled: her daughter Amber has endured frightening encounters with dragons, and Val is still working to rebuild their trust. An impostor connected to Lorena and anti-dragon rebels previously claimed kinship with Val's elven father, leaving both that deception and the wider coercion threat unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Val needs a new home after her landlord raises the rent in response to dangerous magical visitors. She is also part-owner of Dimitri's new coffee and magical-goods business with Nin and vampire alchemist Zoltan. Neighboring psychic Janice Lindberg reports that a masked vampire attacked her daughter and initially suspects the shop. The busy opening draws Seattle's magical community, and Zav's visible mark discourages most challengers while reinforcing his public claim on Val. Val and Zav acknowledge their attraction, but she insists on learning mental defenses before pursuing a relationship. Amber begins sword lessons with Val because earlier dragon encounters left her afraid. Wealthy entrepreneur Bernard Weber then offers Val a highly paid bodyguard assignment. He claims magical spies and hostile werewolves are targeting him over an application meant to locate magical criminals. Val accepts despite the conflict with her planned elven training. At Weber's heavily warded home, Sindari detects numerous artifacts. The job becomes more suspicious when Dimitri reports that Zoltan has vanished from a ransacked laboratory.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Evidence at Zoltan's laboratory points to recently arrived orcs, but their vehicle trail ends quickly. Willard finds Weber's public record respectable yet cannot verify his supposed police-tracking application. Meanwhile, more vampires disappear, a fatal attack is reported, and members of the magical community accuse Val of abducting Zoltan and the others. Val subdues an ambush by werewolves and bear shifters without learning who spread the allegation. At a yacht-club event, she poses as Weber's girlfriend while serving as his bodyguard. Zav confirms that a charm blocks access to Weber's thoughts, deepening Val's doubts about her client. Afterward, magically controlled hounds attack. Val and Sindari stop them, but the vampire directing them escapes. Weber uses specialized anti-vampire ammunition despite having described werewolves as his main danger, then refuses to explain the threat further.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

On the elven world, sentries reject Val because of her mixed heritage and reveal that her father is their absent king. While Zav searches for an instructor, a visiting dragon recognizes Chopper as a weapon once carried by an elven warrior queen. Val's father arrives and confirms that she possesses magic and can learn to resist compulsion. He also says the supposed niece who approached Val was an impostor and suspects that someone in his court leaked his plans. The young elf at Willard's office is revealed as the king's daughter, sent to observe Val. The king authorizes his daughter to teach Val forest magic in exchange for housing, but Val refuses his offer to conduct a marriage ceremony for her and Zav.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Val finds Dimitri's camper but little beyond a note about a possible longevity potion. At the same time, official support recedes: Willard and much of her senior staff are ordered away after pressure to leave the vampire conflict alone. Before departing, Willard asks Val to determine whether Weber is involved. Janice's computer displays IntelliAds, the same advertising logo Val saw at Weber's home. Janice explains that the service has delivered customers with magical blood but provides no ordinary contact information. Following Dimitri's scent with Zav and Sindari, Val reaches a vacant house used by a vampire blacksmith. The signs of a struggle, Dimitri's damaged phone, and an overturned coffin indicate that both Dimitri and the vampire were taken by force. Their shared disappearance adds weight to Val's questions about a possible longevity scheme. Weber is now the focus of Val's suspicions, though she still lacks proof of what lies behind IntelliAds or where the captives have been taken.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

The elven princess begins teaching Val to build a mental defense through nature imagery and soil rich in sulirana. Val can resist her instructor's probes, though a dragon will be a harder test. A voicemail confirms Dimitri is alive and held by a scientist. Another IntelliAds customer is murdered, with a warning directed at anyone supporting the service, so Val asks Nin and Thad to investigate. Near Weber's waterfront property, Val and Sindari intercept Way Rover orcs carrying a powerful iron chest. One dies in the fight, the others reach Weber's land, and Sindari is badly wounded while tracing them to a concealed entrance. Zav reports that Starsinger dragons are searching Earth for a dangerous missing object. At Weber's investor gathering, guests describe a secret project moving beyond animal trials, and Weber reacts to the arriving dragons as though he expected his project to remain hidden. A Starsinger restrains Val, identifies the missing object as the clan queen's egg, and threatens Seattle unless it is returned.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

With dragons fighting above Weber's estate, Val enters the concealed underground complex alone. Its dampening field hides it from magical senses, but she detects Dimitri inside. The laboratory contains cybernetically enhanced bears, imprisoned vampires, and evidence that Weber and his scientist removed tissue from a dragon embryo for longevity research. Val frees Zoltan and the other vampires, rescues an injured Dimitri, and leads them deeper toward the egg. Beyond sealed vault doors, they find the surviving Way Rovers guarding the glowing egg amid magical artifacts. Val arms the freed vampires, and the group defeats the orcs. Weber admits that he created IntelliAds to crowdsource the locations of magical beings and used the resulting information to obtain experimental subjects. Dimitri was seized because he witnessed the vampire blacksmith's abduction. Dimitri kills the last orc, but Weber and the wounded scientist escape by separate routes. Val now has the egg and has ended the immediate captivity, yet she must still carry it through the shielded complex and convince the dragons before their conflict destroys the city.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Val and Dimitri carry the recovered egg toward the surface while the freed vampires remain underground to avoid daylight. Zav reports that Weber has died in dragon fire while fleeing. During the confrontation above, Val returns the egg and explains that Way Rover orcs stole it for Weber. The dragons examine the surviving scientist's unprotected mind, confirming that Zav's clan had no part in the theft. The visiting Starsinger who met Val on the elven world supports her account, helping prevent a clan war, and the Starsingers take their egg home. When that dragon tries to compel Val to leave with him, she uses her new elven techniques and resists, then returns to Zav by her own choice. Zav's sister promises to report Val's role in recovering the egg favorably. After the crisis, Val agrees to rent a large, defensible Victorian house with Dimitri and her elven instructor, while vampires negotiate for the basement. Val and Zav remain attracted but divided over his possessive mate claim. Zav warns that the Dragon Justice Court may formally intervene on Earth because Earth residents enabled the theft, and Val plans to alert Willard while continuing her training.

How does it end? (ending)

Val frees Dimitri, Zoltan, and the other captive vampires from Weber's underground laboratory, defeats the remaining Way Rovers, and recovers the stolen Starsinger egg. Weber dies in dragon fire while escaping, but his scientist survives and gets away after the dragons use his unprotected mind to verify that Zav's clan was not responsible. The Starsingers reclaim the egg and the immediate threat to Seattle ends. Val uses her new elven training to resist the visiting Starsinger's attempt to compel her, then chooses to return to Zav while continuing to reject his possessive claim. She agrees to share a defended Victorian house with Dimitri and her elven instructor, with vampires negotiating for the basement. The unresolved dangers are Weber's escaped scientist and research network, a leak in the elven court, the earlier anti-dragon threat, and possible Dragon Justice Court intervention on Earth. Val plans to warn Willard and continue strengthening her magical defenses.
