Claire Danvers came to Morganville as a young university student and moved into Glass House with Eve Rosser, Shane Collins, and Michael Glass. She learned that vampires secretly rule the town and that human residents survive through Protection contracts. Michael, once a ghost bound to the house, became a vampire but retained his loyalty to his human friends. Claire entered a personal contract with Morganville's founder, Amelie, to protect the household. Amelie assigned her to assist Myrnin, a brilliant but unstable vampire seeking a cure for the illness causing memory loss and violent decline among his kind. Claire and Shane became a couple, while Eve and Michael tried to preserve their relationship across the human-vampire divide. At the close of the previous book, Amelie's ancient father, Bishop, arrived with an entourage, bringing a threat greater than the town's familiar rivalries.

Bishop's arrival changes the balance of Morganville immediately. He presents himself with formal manners, but his companions openly treat humans as prey and disregard the protections Amelie established. Amelie acknowledges that Bishop is her father and understands that his visit is a challenge rather than a family reunion. Claire and the other residents of Glass House are drawn into the confrontation because Bishop can use their human vulnerability against Amelie and Michael. The book closes with Bishop holding the advantage and Morganville divided, carrying the conflict directly into Lord of Misrule.
