In short (whole book)

John Sutton expands Sutton Farm's mana-cleansing wheat into mills, noodles, and portable meals while investigating several linked threats. A visit to Soaring Cloud Tower exposes slavery, loyalty conditioning, and a prophecy of a Beast Tide. John destroys one of four beast portals, then learns that his blue flame contains a dragon spirit that wants his body. When the Iron Monarch's duplicate army invades Lepiera, Ellie helps John resist the dragon's influence and return as the Eternal Flame. Ben uncovers sabotage at the capital gate, John saves the first defense, and Ferdie leads legendary beasts that break the second assault. Ten enemy mages are captured, but their leaders and production base remain free. As John returns to farm and tower work, Katrine warns that Togine is dead and the Cabal of the Broken Gate has learned the world's location, creating an imminent interstellar threat.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: John Sutton established Sutton Farm in a mana-damaged valley and became a public leader through the Ecclesia, although he now wants a life centered on farming rather than war. Ellie remains his closest partner, combining witchcraft, invention, and practical judgment. Ben is growing into a trained classholder under the protection of the household and two hidden specters. Ferdie and Sigvald are powerful animal companions who defend the farm. John's work has become larger than the farm itself: his wheat can consume harmful mana, while a reverse-filter enchantment helps prevent dangerously pure mana from destabilizing the world. Former allies and rulers have gathered around the valley, and Shadow Tower preserves research connected to the First Mage. John also carries blue dragon flame and immense power, but the full consequences of that inheritance are not yet understood. Beyond the valley, Allera is unstable, Lepiera faces growing pressure, and food shortages threaten ordinary people.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

So far this book: John finds that his experimental wheat has not yet removed the valley's remaining mana taint, while a mysterious counter assigns him ten apocalypse points. Refugees fleeing hunger and the expected Allera-Lepiera war pour into Fairford, where John approves settlement for those willing to work. He also helps researchers calculate an activation for the First Mage's doorway. A hostile hermit opens it early to an unknown world, attacks the group with unusually dense golden mana, and is apparently killed after his summoned dragon drags him through. The incident proves that powers beyond this world can make contact. John continues the harvest and improves a mechanical combine while war and food prices worsen. Ben asks to leave the valley for a merchant apprenticeship, forcing John and Ellie to weigh safety against his independence. Ellie recognizes that Ben needs greater independence, but her final consent is still pending. With a properly calculated destination ready, Katrine and an elder sage pass through the doorway, planning to return after a year.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

John's promise to remain in this world until it is restored reduces his apocalypse count from ten to nine, though the system gives no explanation. Ben departs with the merchant, and John turns the harvest toward famine relief. With help from the Shadow Tower plant administrator, he separates wheat into refined flour and begins designing a mana-powered mill. Ellie tests bread and solves the noodle recipe, while Rebea helps construct machinery and manage excess mana. The farm expands rapidly, adding workers, cattle, and large-scale baking capacity. The work is interrupted when raiders burn Jem and chain its residents. John, Ellie, Thomas, Ferdie, and Sigvald rescue the settlement, defeat the attackers, and accept their surrender. Eva places a lethal brand on the prisoners for control. Jem is safe, but the captured force's sponsor and purpose have not yet been established, leaving John with both an urgent investigation and a growing food operation.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

The Jem prisoners reveal that a count ordered the raid and that two captive mages came from Soaring Cloud Tower. Koeri identifies its three masters as Joro, Orateth, and the Forgelord. John and Ellie travel toward the tower with the mages and Ferdie, learning that the tower accepts human thralls and predicts a world-ending Beast Tide. Koeri's missing childhood memories, altered age, and cursed bracer suggest that the tower also conditions its own disciples. Before reaching it, the party stops in the Forbidden Lands, where enchanted insects threaten a crucial wheat harvest. John confirms that the crop is safe, then leads an assault on the swarm's nest. His immense flood spell destroys most of the ruined town above it but creates a corrosive mana storm, forcing the group underground. They fight to a chamber containing a device that manufactures insects from a specimen trapped in amber. John removes the specimen, damages the machine, and drains the storm, ending the immediate infestation. Recent replacement parts show that someone had deliberately kept the ancient device operating.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

John heals the great beast Ferdie fought, then enters Soaring Cloud Tower through a vast sensory curse. Inside, laborers who failed mage training live as collared thralls. Orateth explains that the tower hid for more than two centuries after a prophecy warned of humanity's enslavement by beasts. She says its masters now want to unite humanity, but Ellie discovers that the guests' food and tea contain an accumulating loyalty drug. A captive legendary beast confirms that a Beast King is raising armies, and John's quest identifies the Beast Tide as the first of three major apocalypse threats. When the masters test him, John withstands the Forgelord's attack and reveals his mana-less blue flame. Their attitude changes immediately. John trades a sample of that flame for shared research and secures a non-aggression agreement, but refuses an offer to become a fourth master. Ellie objects that the arrangement leaves the tower's slavery intact. On their departure, they discover that an unknown party has already excavated the disabled insect machine.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Back at Sutton Farm, John commits the Ecclesia to an explicit anti-slavery position while the missing insect machine remains a future danger. Shadow Tower research connects its duplication spell to ancient theories that cannot copy minds or souls, leaving the living insects unexplained. John also tests a dangerous growth treatment. The process, called manamorphosis, strengthens his body and reveals that his blue dragon flame functions as an unusual, extremely dense mana pool, but the treatment is unsafe for anyone else. Reopening the iron mine exposes a vast cavern where a stone worm guards one of four portals prepared for the Beast King's invasion. John destroys that portal and spares the guard under a flame constraint. Records then explain why the underground witnesses fear him: dragon spirits can survive death and manipulate new hosts. John recognizes the archived dragon as the source of his blue flame. A quest confirms that its soul sleeps inside his mana pool, grows whenever he grows stronger, and may eventually take his body. Ellie helps him accept the danger without surrendering his own identity.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

A plains caravan delivers wheat, allowing Sutton Farm's automated mills and noodle lines to begin supplying portable meals at scale. Its leader also brings news that Allera's ruler now calls himself the Iron Monarch and has launched a major invasion of Lepiera with armored troops and lightning weapons. High Marshal Helbright arrives to ask John to return to battle, reporting that the enemy kills resisters, enslaves survivors, and overwhelms Lepiera's retreating army. John hesitates because killing increases his power and strengthens his desire to use it. That conflict gives the dragon spirit an opening to attack his mind. Ellie and Sigvald enter the struggle, and Ellie reaches John through their bond and the remembered ideal of the Eternal Flame as hope rather than domination. John forces the dragon back, but now knows it can try to possess him. He agrees to help the threatened population without treating the war as service to a nation. Ellie and Ferdie join him, Thomas remains to defend and supply the farm, and John resumes command of the Eternal Flame.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

At Lepiera's capital, Ben persuades his merchant associates to donate their food stores before the siege. He then discovers robed saboteurs preparing to destroy the main gate. Ben disrupts them and warns the city, but a hostile mage still blasts open the gate and lets the Iron Monarch's tireless armored troops into the breach. Ben, Aurora, and Henluin support the defenders until John and Ellie arrive. John kills the fleeing hostile mage, seals the breach with flame, and confronts the Iron Monarch. The emperor's armor absorbs nearby mana and counters direct magic, but John releases more of his internal power, assumes a blue-flame armored form, and physically defeats him. The invading army retreats, buying only a short reprieve. Before interrogation, the Iron Monarch's body destroys itself. Examination of other corpses reveals identical manufactured soldiers whose bodies vanish outside their armor. John and Ellie conclude that an external system creates bodies and installs collected souls within them. The production base and enemy mages remain active, while every death John causes risks strengthening the dragon's influence.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

John rewards Aurora and Henluin for protecting Ben and promises both specters another favor. With no quarry close enough, he orders part of the palace dismantled so citizens can rebuild the gate and walls before the enemy returns. His appeal to place lives above symbols spreads the Eternal Flame's blessing among the workers. The next duplicate army is far larger. Four mages from the Order of the New Dawn demand surrender and claim to seek a new order for humanity, but a curse prevents them from identifying their master. John releases them with an ultimatum, and the attack begins under a replacement Iron Monarch. Enemy mages keep John occupied while he tries to capture rather than kill them, limiting the dragon spirit's leverage. Ben and the city commander delay the duplicate emperor until Ferdie arrives as a legendary draconic bull leading other legendary beasts. Ferdie and Sigvald destroy the emperor's armor and kill the duplicate. The beasts rout the army, John captures the enemy mages, and two powerful enemies escape toward their base.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

High Marshal Helbright and the allied plains forces reach the liberated capital after the battle. John orders them to clear the remaining invaders, restore the border, secure populated Allera settlements, and move civilians into Lepiera. He then returns with Ellie, Ferdie, and ten captured Order mages to Shadow Tower. Ellie finds that Ferdie's purified mana offers protection from divination and fate magic. She also detects a coercive plant extract in the prisoners, raising a possible connection to the conditioning used at Soaring Cloud Tower. The plant administrator identifies three curses on the captives: enforced obedience linked to the drug, fate-binding, and theft of life that accelerates aging. The Order's master, production system, escaped leaders, and relationship to the tower remain unresolved. John resumes plans for winter wheat and a larger farm, while the dragon spirit and three beast portals remain active dangers. Katrine then sends a final warning: Togine is dead, she revealed the world's location under torture, and the Cabal of the Broken Gate is pursuing her and coming to exploit and enslave the world.

How does it end? (ending)

Lepiera's capital survives both attacks. Ferdie and Sigvald destroy the second Iron Monarch body, while the legendary beasts rout the duplicate army. John takes ten Order of the New Dawn mages alive, although two senior mages escape toward the production base. High Marshal Helbright arrives with the plains forces and receives orders to restore the border, clear remaining invaders, and manage the movement of civilians from occupied Allera settlements. John, Ellie, Ferdie, and the captives return to Shadow Tower. The prisoners carry three linked curses involving coerced loyalty, fate, and stolen life, leaving the Order's master and its possible connection to Soaring Cloud Tower unresolved. John resumes farm expansion, but the dragon spirit remains inside him and three beast portals are still active. Katrine then sends a desperate message from beyond the world: Togine is dead, she disclosed the world's location under torture, and the Cabal of the Broken Gate is coming to exploit and enslave it.
