By George R.R. Martin

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Abner Marsh (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A massive, plain-spoken Mississippi River steamboat captain whose struggling company has been devastated by financial losses. Marsh loves boats, competition, and the river with an intensity that outweighs comfort or social approval. A mysterious investor's offer gives him the chance to build the fastest and finest steamer he can imagine, though the partnership comes with unusual conditions.

Joshua York (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A pale, wealthy stranger who offers to rescue Marsh's company and finance an extraordinary new steamboat. York is polished, private, and accustomed to command. He insists on sharing the captaincy, keeps nocturnal hours, and reserves the right to divert the boat without explaining his business, leaving Marsh unsure what his partner truly wants.

Jonathon Jeffers (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

Marsh's trusted clerk and business aide. Jeffers helps manage the practical affairs surrounding the new steamer and serves as a steady member of the captain's circle as York's unexplained demands begin to disrupt ordinary river business.

Karl Framm (Minor)

First appears in chapter 5

A skilled river pilot hired for the Fevre Dream. Framm's experience helps turn the costly new vessel into a formidable packet boat capable of pursuing Marsh's ambition to surpass every rival on the Mississippi.

Toby Lanyard (Minor)

First appears in chapter 10

The Fevre Dream's cook, valued by Marsh as part of the working community aboard the new boat. His position below decks places him among crew members most exposed when the dangers surrounding York's secret business reach the vessel.

Sour Billy Tipton (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 15

A vicious human attendant who serves Damon Julian and helps conceal his master's predatory household. Sour Billy combines cruelty with a calculating instinct for survival. He knows enough about Julian's kind to fear them, envy their long lives, and exploit the human world on their behalf.

Damon Julian (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 18

The ancient ruler of a violent community that treats human beings as prey. Julian is outwardly youthful and composed, but he enforces obedience through fear and an instinctive authority over others of his kind. He regards Joshua York's effort to end their dependence on blood as both weakness and a challenge to his supremacy.

Valerie (Minor)

First appears in chapter 20

One of the night people living under Damon Julian's rule. Valerie accepts the predatory order Julian protects and stands with his household when Joshua York arrives offering a different future for their kind.
