After the Hancock battle, Pavel Young is court-martialed for abandoning Honor Harrington's formation. He escapes the capital charges but is dismissed from the Navy, then inherits the North Hollow title and uses its political machine to pursue revenge. While Honor secures her position as a Grayson steadholder, Young hires Denver Summervale to kill her partner, Paul Tankersley, in a rigged duel and then target Honor. Honor's allies capture Summervale and expose the contract. She kills him in a formal duel, survives a later attack by hired gunmen, and publicly challenges Young when the law cannot reach him. Young breaks the Dreyfus protocol by firing before the command, shattering Honor's left shoulder. Honor kills him with her return fire. She lives, but her naval command and position in the Lords remain unresolved as Manticore enters formal war with Haven.

Previously: Honor Harrington is an officer in the Royal Manticoran Navy and also holds the position of steadholder on Grayson. Her two offices bind her to both Manticore's service and the responsibilities of a Grayson ruler. Nimitz is her bonded treecat, and Captain Paul Tankersley is her partner. Michelle Henke is a longtime friend who has served as her executive officer aboard HMS Nike. Admiral Mark Sarnow is Honor's former flag officer, with Ernestine Corell as his chief of staff, while Earl White Haven is another senior Manticoran commander connected to her service. Pavel Young is an established adversary within the Navy. Honor therefore begins this volume with a network spanning her ship, the senior command structure, her private life, and Grayson. Those relationships and divided duties remain active as she returns to the unresolved military consequences of the recent Hancock battle.

The inquiry into the Hancock battle accepts Honor's decision to retain task-group command after Mark Sarnow was incapacitated. Pavel Young, who ignored her orders and withdrew his cruiser, is placed under close arrest for cowardice and desertion. His possible court-martial quickly becomes part of a larger political struggle: Duke Cromarty needs opposition votes for a declaration of war against Haven, and Young's father can mobilize the bloc that threatens the government. Honor is ordered to avoid public comment. Queen Elizabeth III demonstrates her support by making Honor a Colonel of Marines, while Michelle Henke receives promotion and a light-cruiser command. HMS Nike remains under repair, its staff is being rebuilt, and Honor's wealth grows through Grayson income and prize awards. Young privately acknowledges that panic drove his withdrawal, but his father plans to use political influence in his defense. The court-martial board is assembled, including Sonja Hemphill and Rex Jurgens, as Sarnow begins a long recovery from his wounds.

The Admiralty publishes the Hancock report, exposing Honor, her family, and HMS Nike's crew to intense media pressure. Paul Tankersley gives Honor a brief escape at Saganami Island before Pavel Young's court-martial opens under Earl White Haven. Honor is the prosecution's first witness. The judges agree on the events but divide over whether Young could legally disregard Honor after Sarnow's incapacitation. Rex Jurgens argues that Young retained independent authority, while other members hold that the flagship's orders remained binding. Repeated votes produce a deadlock until Sonja Hemphill supports a compromise. The court declines to convict on the capital cowardice and desertion charges, but finds Young guilty of abandoning the formation, disobeying orders, and contributing to serious losses. He is stripped of rank and dishonorably dismissed from the Royal Manticoran Navy. His father collapses immediately after the verdict. Young avoids execution, but his naval career ends in disgrace and the political dispute surrounding the prosecution remains unresolved.

Pavel Young's father dies, and Young inherits the title of Earl of North Hollow along with its political organization. HMS Nike's repairs accelerate, and Honor is expected to return as flag captain when her squadron joins Earl White Haven's task force. White Haven instead sends her on extended leave to Grayson, both to answer the Protector's summons and to remove her from the political campaign surrounding Young's trial. The Queen also intends Honor to take her seat in the House of Lords after crucial votes. Honor and Paul separate for the expected months apart, and Honor arrives on Grayson as Steadholder Harrington. Meanwhile, North Hollow uses inherited compromising files to rebuild his public position. He plans to support the government's war declaration for political advantage while privately pursuing revenge against Honor and the Navy. To act outside normal politics, he calls on Georgia Sakristos, a specialist he can coerce through those same files. His dismissal has removed his naval authority, but his new title gives him a fresh platform and more private means of retaliation.

On Grayson, Honor witnesses rapid military expansion and formally secures her place in the conclave of steadholders. She preserves her obligations to Manticore and her own faith while accepting authority over her steading, with Howard Clinkscales continuing as regent. Elsewhere, Denver Summervale, a former Marine and paid duelist linked to an earlier suspicious killing, appears aboard Hephaestus. He deliberately provokes Paul Tankersley by attacking Honor's judgment and character. Paul strikes him and is trapped into accepting a prepared duel. While Honor begins an agricultural venture for her steading, Michelle Henke arrives with news that Paul has been killed. Georgia Sakristos then secretly uses her access to North Hollow's security system to send a warning. Mark Sarnow, Ernestine Corell, Tomas Ramirez, and other allies learn that Summervale was paid to kill Paul and has also been retained to kill Honor after grief drives her into challenging him. Summervale is hiding with armed associates and waiting for Honor's return, while the identity of the patron is not yet established to Honor's allies.

Tomas Ramirez leads a covert Marine raid on Summervale's isolated chalet. The team, including Iris Babcock, captures him and obtains his admission that the Earl of North Hollow paid him to kill Paul and Honor. Michelle Henke brings Honor back to HMS Nike, where Major Andrew LaFollet arrives with her permanent Grayson security detail. Ramirez gives Honor the recording that identifies North Hollow as the sponsor. As Manticore formally declares war on Haven, Honor regains enough control to pursue a deliberate plan. She confronts Summervale publicly, accuses him and North Hollow, and maneuvers him into challenging her under lethal continuous-fire rules. Earl White Haven warns that extending her campaign to North Hollow could destroy her career and destabilize the wartime government, and expressly orders her not to challenge Young. Honor nevertheless proceeds with the duel against Summervale. At forty meters she fires before he can bring his weapon to bear, kills him with five shots, and emerges uninjured. Summervale's immediate threat is ended, but Honor's determination to reach North Hollow remains in direct conflict with White Haven's order.

Honor seeks a way to reach Pavel Young before HMS Nike returns to service. Hired gunmen attack her party in a restaurant, seriously wounding one armsman and injuring her financier, but Andrew LaFollet takes control and the Grayson detail helps stop the assault. Police find no proof of who paid the attackers. Georgia Sakristos concludes that Young ordered the attack without consulting her and continues working covertly toward his removal. Because Young leaves his residence for parliamentary duties, Honor invokes her delayed right to make a maiden speech in the House of Lords. Before the assembled peers, she identifies him as a murderer and coward and challenges him to a duel. Young accepts the Dreyfus protocol rather than face political ruin. Honor expects exclusion from the Lords and the loss of her naval command, and visits HMS Nike as if saying farewell. At the dueling ground, Young fires before the command to turn, striking and catastrophically damaging Honor's left shoulder. Honor remains able to return fire and shoots him three times in the chest. Young dies, Honor survives, and the immediate conflict ends with his failed breach of the duel rules. Her medical, naval, and political aftermath is not established.

Honor survives the Dreyfus-protocol duel, but Pavel Young's illegal first shot catastrophically injures her left shoulder. Her return fire kills him. Denver Summervale, who murdered Paul Tankersley under Young's contract, is also dead, while Georgia Sakristos has worked covertly against Young from inside his organization. Honor's Grayson guards remain at her side, and Manticore is formally at war with Haven. Before the duel, Duke Cromarty expected Young's death to force Honor's removal from naval command to protect the government's coalition, and exclusion from the House of Lords appeared likely even though her title was expected to survive. HMS Nike was nearing a return to service, but Honor had treated her last bridge visit as a farewell. Her medical recovery, command, parliamentary position, and the final political consequences are not established by the close of the available story action.
