In 1978, obsessive reader Morris Bellamy murders novelist John Rothstein and steals cash and notebooks containing unpublished work. Morris hides the haul but is imprisoned for another crime before he can retrieve it. Decades later, teenager Pete Saubers finds the buried trunk. He anonymously uses the money to support his family after his father is injured in Brady Hartsfield's City Center massacre, then becomes absorbed in the manuscripts. When Pete tries to sell pages, he attracts a dishonest dealer and, after Morris is released, Morris himself. Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson follow Tina Saubers's worries to Pete's secret. Morris kills to recover the notebooks and threatens Pete's family, but Pete lures him to the hidden manuscripts and sets them alight. Morris dies trying to save them, while Pete and his family survive. Afterward, signs at Brady's hospital bedside suggest that the supposedly unresponsive killer has dangerous abilities no one yet understands.

Retired detective Bill Hodges was drawn out of isolation when Brady Hartsfield, the driver responsible for the deadly City Center job-fair attack, began taunting him. With help from teenager Jerome Robinson and Holly Gibney, Hodges uncovered Brady's identity and interrupted his plan to bomb a crowded concert. Holly struck Brady in the head before he could trigger the explosives, leaving him severely brain-injured and confined to a hospital. Hodges and Holly have since formed a small investigative agency called Finders Keepers. Brady's earlier attack continues to affect survivors and their families, including people Hodges has never met.

In 1978, Morris Bellamy and two accomplices break into the home of reclusive novelist John Rothstein. Morris is obsessed with Rothstein's Jimmy Gold novels and furious about the direction the writer gave his hero. The thieves kill Rothstein and take both a large amount of cash and numerous notebooks containing unpublished writing. Morris then kills his accomplices, conceals the money and manuscripts in a trunk buried near his childhood home, and intends to enjoy the notebooks later. Before he can do so, he receives a long prison sentence for an unrelated assault. Decades later, the Saubers family moves into the same neighborhood. Tom Saubers is badly hurt in Brady Hartsfield's City Center attack, and the resulting unemployment, pain, and debt push his marriage toward collapse. His son Pete discovers the buried trunk. He quietly mails cash to his parents in installments, easing the crisis, while keeping the notebooks for himself and becoming fascinated by Rothstein's unseen work.

Years of anonymous cash payments stabilize the Saubers household, but the buried money eventually runs out. Pete continues reading Rothstein's notebooks and recognizes both their literary importance and their potential monetary value. He needs funds for his family and hopes to help Tina attend a better school, yet he cannot explain where the manuscripts came from without exposing the theft and his long deception. He approaches Andrew Halliday, a dealer with knowledge of rare books, seeking a way to sell some pages. Halliday realizes that the teenager possesses the missing Rothstein material and tries to exploit Pete's fear of the authorities. Meanwhile, Bill Hodges and Holly Gibney operate Finders Keepers, and Jerome Robinson remains close to them while at college. Tina's anxiety about her brother reaches Barbara Robinson, creating the first connection between Pete's secret and Hodges's circle.

Morris Bellamy is released after more than three decades in prison and returns to retrieve his buried treasure. Finding the trunk empty, he becomes determined to identify whoever took the cash and, more importantly to him, Rothstein's notebooks. His old connection to Halliday gives him a route toward Pete. Halliday, already pressuring the teenager, is now caught between the valuable manuscripts and the violent man who originally stole them. Tina tells Barbara enough about Pete's behavior to confirm that he is in serious trouble. Barbara brings the concern to Hodges and Holly, who begin asking how the Saubers family survived its worst financial years and why Pete is frightened now. Their investigation starts to uncover the pattern of anonymous support and Pete's dealings with Halliday, while Morris closes in from the other direction.

Morris confronts Halliday and kills him while pursuing the missing Rothstein papers. Pete realizes that the danger is no longer limited to blackmail or prosecution, but he still tries to keep his parents and Tina from learning the truth. Hodges, Holly, and Jerome piece together the link between the old Rothstein murder, the buried proceeds, Halliday, and the Saubers family's mysterious payments. Morris learns that Pete has the manuscripts and focuses all his attention on forcing the boy to return them. The same notebooks that once gave Pete a private refuge and the means to save his family have become the reason a killer is hunting him. Hodges's group races to reach Pete before Morris can use the teenager's family as leverage.

Morris attacks the Saubers household and uses Pete's family to compel his cooperation. Pete understands that argument and money cannot divert a man whose deepest obsession is possessing Rothstein's unpublished work. He offers Morris access to the notebooks and leads the confrontation away from his family toward the place where the papers are hidden. Hodges, Holly, and Jerome follow the trail while trying to protect the hostages and anticipate Pete's plan. Pete prepares to use the manuscripts themselves as his only effective bargaining tool, knowing that threatening the pages may destabilize Morris but also puts an irreplaceable body of writing at risk.

At the recreation center, Pete threatens to burn the Rothstein notebooks rather than surrender them. The confrontation turns into a fire, and Morris dies trying to rescue the manuscripts he has valued above other people's lives. Hodges reaches Pete and helps him escape, while the Saubers family survives Morris's violence and is reunited. The unpublished Rothstein work is destroyed, but Pete is no longer trapped by the theft, the secret payments, or Halliday's pressure. In the aftermath, the family begins moving forward from both Tom's injuries and Pete's ordeal. Hodges continues to visit Brady Hartsfield, who remains hospitalized and outwardly unresponsive after Holly's blow. Subtle, unexplained movements near Brady indicate that he is aware and may be exerting influence beyond what his doctors believe possible. Morris's threat has ended, but Brady is emerging as a danger again.

Morris forces the Saubers family into his hunt for Rothstein's notebooks, but Pete uses the one thing Morris values more than money to draw him away from his hostages. At the recreation center, Pete threatens the manuscripts with fire. During the confrontation the notebooks ignite, and Morris dies while trying to save the pages he has worshipped. Hodges reaches Pete and helps him escape, leaving the Saubers family alive and reunited. The stolen Rothstein manuscripts are destroyed, but Pete is freed from the secret that had first rescued and then endangered his family. Later, Hodges continues visiting the apparently unresponsive Brady Hartsfield in the hospital. Small unexplained events around Brady suggest that his mind is active and that he may be able to affect objects without touching them. The case of Morris Bellamy is closed, while Brady's condition becomes the unresolved threat leading into the trilogy's final book.
