An injured, amnesiac girl who wakes alone in a cave. Although she appears to be a young Black child, she has extraordinary strength, rapid healing, sharply heightened senses, and an instinctive need for blood.

A construction worker who finds Shori walking beside a road and initially believes she is a lost child. Her bite creates a powerful physical bond between them, and he helps her investigate her identity despite his alarm at what she is.

Shori's father, an Ina man who recognizes her after her memory loss. He explains her species, her experimental mixed heritage, and the network of mutual dependence between Ina and their human symbionts.

One of Iosif's human symbionts. After the attack on his community, she helps Shori understand Ina customs and the needs created by a symbiont's physiological bond.

A human symbiont who survives the destruction of Iosif's settlement. She joins Shori's growing household and assists in caring for other survivors while the source of the attacks remains unknown.

An older human woman who offers Shori practical help and companionship. After accepting Shori's bite, she becomes a willing symbiont and part of the fragile new community Shori is assembling.

A senior member of the Gordon family, an established Ina clan to whom Shori turns after attacks destroy her relatives' communities. He provides protection and helps convene an Ina Council of Judgment.

A younger man of the Gordon family who becomes one of Shori's closest Ina allies. He helps defend the Gordon settlement and supports her effort to rebuild family ties after her losses.

A male elder of the Silk family, which is accused of organizing the attacks on Shori's relatives. At the council he defends his family against testimony linking its members and symbionts to the violence.

An Ina elder connected to the families opposing Shori's genetically mixed lineage. Her conduct during the Council of Judgment makes the conflict more than a dispute about evidence and exposes the depth of the hostility Shori faces.
