In short (whole book)
Several distant struggles reshape the people around the Wandering Inn. Laken becomes an Emperor and saves avalanche-buried River Farm with Durene. Geneva establishes neutral battlefield medicine in Baleros but survives only through a self-bodied rogue's connection. Ryoka befriends Ivolethe, clashes with Persua, and becomes Magnolia Reinhart's uneasy ally. Pawn turns a disastrous religious awakening into a path toward Antinium individuality, while Lyonette restores the inn by serving his painted soldiers and caring for a young Gnoll. In Esthelm, Redfang warriors sacrifice themselves to help defeat a Goblin Lord force as the independent skeleton Toren commands undead and escapes. Erin learns that Pisces created Toren with sentience and orders his mana link severed, though his death is not confirmed. She leaves for Liscor with the Horns of Hammerad, carrying a recovered magical door that now opens a portal to her inn.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Erin, an innkeeper from Earth, established the Wandering Inn outside Liscor and befriended Drakes, Gnolls, Antinium, adventurers, and goblins. Ryoka, another displaced person from Earth, worked as a runner while refusing classes and levels. Their choices drew them into conflicts involving Liscor's Hive, goblin tribes, dangerous ruins, and powerful nobles. The original Horns of Hammerad were destroyed, but Ceria and Pisces survived and began rebuilding the team with Yvlon and Ksmvr. Erin's inn also became home to Lyonette and to Toren, an unusually capable skeleton. At the start of this volume, Erin and Ryoka are away from Liscor, Lyonette remains behind at the inn, and the re-formed Horns are attempting to recover from their losses.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Laken, a blind man from San Francisco, appears near River Farm and accepts shelter from Durene. He declares himself Emperor of the Unseen, gains the Emperor class, and commits himself to protecting her. When the villagers' hostility forces Durene to reveal that she is half-troll, Laken rejects their treatment of her and remains at her side. The re-formed Horns of Hammerad enter a hidden section of Albez while nearly out of money and food. Traps and juvenile crellers wear them down before a ward casts them into a pit dominated by an insanity rune. In Esthelm, Erin continues experimenting with food while Ryoka looks for work and a safe route back to Liscor. One Frost Faerie stays with Ryoka and names herself Ivolethe. Their friendship deepens after Ryoka rescues her from Persua's group. The confrontation leaves Persua badly beaten and vowing revenge, while Ryoka leaves Esthelm and accepts Ivolethe's offer to teach her the Fae way of running.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Lyonette reopens the Wandering Inn with paid help from Olesm. Her cooking is poor and most customers leave when they learn Erin is absent, but Pawn's visit gives her both income and a reason to keep trying. Pawn secretly holds the Acolyte class and asks Klbkch for guidance. His later teaching about heaven drives hundreds of Antinium soldiers toward suicide. After many die, Pawn persuades the survivors to live and imagine a heaven they must create for themselves. Klbkch permits him to test whether the wounded soldiers can become Individuals. In Baleros, medical student Geneva Scala joins a mercenary battalion and gains the Doctor class. A battle destroys the unit's potion reserves and leaves her responsible for mass casualties. She establishes triage and treats fighters from both sides beneath a neutral medical sign. When an officer attacks her for aiding an enemy, a self-bodied rogue kills him and enters Geneva's injured body to keep her alive. Geneva survives with the right side of her body unusable and the connection temporarily irreversible.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
Ceria and Ksmvr resist Albez's mental trap long enough to shield the insanity rune. The Horns escape the pit and enter a dead war mage's treasury, where Yvlon destroys a fire guardian at the cost of having enchanted metal fused into both arms. Much of the treasure burns, but the party salvages damaged magical items, wealth, and part of a spellbook. They escape Albez alive and receive public acclaim, although Yvlon's injury cannot be simply healed and the haul still needs expert appraisal. Ryoka reunites with the Horns and agrees to consider carrying their items to a major center of magical expertise. Before that plan is settled, Ressa compels her to travel to Magnolia Reinhart's estate. Ryoka uses the journey to transport the Horns' property. Ivolethe warns of two goblin forces moving through the region, and Magnolia's carriage passes through Rags' northbound column. Rags recognizes Ryoka, while Ressa reveals formidable combat ability protecting the carriage.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Laken discovers that his claimed land grants him detailed awareness despite his blindness. He and Durene adopt an orphaned eaglet named Frostwing, and Frost Fairies recognize his imperial claim enough to spare his immediate land from an avalanche. River Farm is buried instead. Laken claims the village as a protectorate, extends his perception through the wreckage, and directs a disciplined rescue while Durene performs the heaviest work. Most villagers survive and accept his rule, but the settlement remains devastated and short of winter supplies. At Magnolia Reinhart's estate, Ryoka learns that Magnolia wants knowledge from Earth while seeking control over its profitable applications. Ryoka refuses to provide it freely, but discloses that the Antinium fear a greater god-like threat. Magnolia accepts the warning and shifts from preparing for war with the Antinium toward seeking peace. Their new alliance is interrupted when a Circle of Thorns assassination attempt begins.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
Erin proves that her magical cooking depends on her Innkeeper skill and cannot be copied by recipe alone. She shelters Jasi, a Drake washerwoman, and Grev, Jasi's young adoptive brother who is close to exile for theft. Searching for a future they can choose, Erin uncovers Jasi's wish to travel, Grev's adventuring ambition, and Wesle's dream of knighthood. She organizes a public performance with Jasi and Wesle as the leads. The play succeeds, draws a large audience to the inn, and gives the new actors a possible calling.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Esthelm's survivors are rallied behind barricades by a gold-rank defender while the Redfang band hides inside the city. A famine-altered former florist, transformed by starvation and cannibalism, attaches herself to the goblins after they spare her. Toren learns to command lesser undead and attacks both humans and the Goblin Lord's patrols. When the assault begins, the isolated Redfangs strike the enemy leadership. Grunter kills the commander and dies, Bad Arrow eliminates the shamans controlling the undead, and Head Scratcher's group disables Toren at the cost of most of its warriors. Adventurer reinforcements rout the leaderless attackers and save Esthelm. Toren escapes with a small undead force, then fatally wounds the altered woman before being driven away. She dies among the goblins after demonstrating that her transformation did not erase her ability to choose and care. The surviving Redfangs depart with their wounded and their dead, while Esthelm acknowledges that their intervention was decisive.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Pawn receives command of wounded Antinium soldiers and seeks a purpose for them beyond battle. Lyonette, nearly starving at the empty inn, finds a new food supply by using dying magical flowers to subdue ashfire bees. She takes honey, grubs, and bees, then agrees to shelter a young white-furred Gnoll who seeks her protection. On their first surface patrol, Pawn's soldiers encounter sky, snow, and animals with wonder. Pawn values their safety over efficiency and brings them to the inn for food and rest. When the young Gnoll leaves white paw marks on one soldier, Pawn realizes that painted designs can give the voiceless soldiers visible identities. Their chosen patterns inspire others in the Hive to think of themselves as people and begin leveling. Lyonette gains steady customers and new confidence, while Klbkch authorizes the experiment to continue. The progress draws scrutiny as a delegation representing four other Antinium hives arrives to inspect Liscor's unusual Individuals. Pawn must conceal his religious class during their visit.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
The Horns of Hammerad reach Erin after traveling as caravan guards because their Albez expenses have left them poor. They tell her what was learned about the undead leader at Esthelm. Pisces admits that Toren was his experiment, made able to level and reason but given no conscience or moral guidance. Erin decides that the killings must end and orders Pisces to sever Toren's mana link. The act should destroy him, but no one witnesses the result. Erin mourns him as a person with a soul and remains unsure whether he is truly gone. Yvlon distrusts Pisces for creating him, though Erin's defense persuades her to keep Pisces under the team's scrutiny. Erin helps the local actors stage another successful production, then chooses Liscor and the Wandering Inn as the home and responsibility she must return to. Pisces and Ksmvr revisit Albez and recover the enchanted door and its anchor from the trap pit. The Horns give both pieces to Erin as her share of the expedition. Pisces and Ceria adapt the magic into a functioning portal between a doorway traveling with Erin and another opening at the inn. Erin departs for Liscor with Ceria, Pisces, Yvlon, and Ksmvr, carrying a new means of reaching home while Toren's fate remains unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Erin mourns Toren after authorizing Pisces to sever the mana sustaining him. No one witnesses Toren's destruction, so his fate remains uncertain. Erin chooses to return to Liscor with Ceria, Pisces, Yvlon, and Ksmvr. Pisces and Ksmvr recover an enchanted door and anchor from Albez, and the Horns give them to Erin. The mages turn the pair into a working portal connected to the inn, although its range and traffic depend on stored mana. Lyonette has made the Wandering Inn viable through honey, cooked bees, and Antinium customers. She cares for the young white-furred Gnoll and a bee larva while Pawn's painted soldiers begin developing individual identities. Delegates from other Antinium hives arrive to inspect Liscor's unusual population, with Pawn's Acolyte class still concealed. Laken and Durene rule a devastated River Farm that needs food, shelter, burial work, and protection. Ryoka remains tied to Ivolethe and Magnolia while facing Persua's threatened revenge. Geneva continues her medical work in Baleros with her injured body dependent on the self-bodied rogue. The Esthelm siege is over, but the wider Goblin Lord army, Garen's hostility, and Magnolia's conflict with the Circle of Thorns remain open.
