Previously: Rachel Morgan left Inderland Security and founded Vampiric Charms with living vampire Ivy Tamwood and pixy Jenks. She exposed Trent Kalamack as secretly elven, proved undead vampire master Piscary was murdering witches, and freed the ancient elf Ceri from demon Algaliarept. Nick Sparagmos left Rachel after becoming her accidental familiar; Rachel then began a relationship with living vampire Kisten. Rachel learned that her father and Trent's father worked together and that their genetic research helped save her from Rosewood syndrome. When Nick and Jenks's son Jax stole the Were Focus, Rachel rescued them from competing packs but discovered that Nick had manipulated her. She ended their relationship and brought the Focus back to Cincinnati. Rachel begins this book dating Kisten, still connected to Al, bonded in a small pack with David Hue, and holding an artifact powerful enough to make her a target.

A powerful demon intrusion at the church makes clear that Rachel's wards and bargains no longer keep demon affairs at a safe distance. At the same time, possession of the Focus attracts continuing attention from Weres who see it as a means to consolidate pack authority. Rachel cannot simply hand it to the loudest claimant without helping create a new imbalance, yet keeping it exposes Ivy, Jenks, and everyone at the church. Glenn draws Rachel into an FIB investigation involving deaths with supernatural features. The case begins to overlap with the pressure around the artifact, giving Rachel both a public duty and a private reason to identify who is using the conflict as cover.

Rachel and Glenn follow the deaths through communities in which police evidence, pack custom, and magical coercion do not line up neatly. David helps Rachel interpret the Were interests surrounding the Focus and reminds her that her pack bond gives her obligations as well as protection. Trent also wants a controlled resolution because the artifact was taken from his people and can affect the balance among Inderlander factions. Rachel accepts limited cooperation without trusting him to value the same lives she does. Her relationship with Kisten remains one of the few sources of ordinary comfort, although his freedom is still constrained by Piscary's old claims and by the instability created when the master was imprisoned.

Skimmer arrives as Piscary's attorney and as a figure from Ivy's intimate past. Meanwhile, the investigation and the Focus dispute reveal overlapping attempts to steer Rachel into surrendering control. Ceri and Quen approach the crisis from the perspective of elven survival, while Rachel continues to resist any solution that makes one supernatural community secure by placing another under compulsion. The danger now reaches across demon, Were, vampire, and elven politics rather than remaining a single murder case.

Rachel moves toward a final disposition of the Focus as the FIB case exposes how people have been killed and manipulated around the struggle for control. The artifact cannot remain indefinitely at the church, but every proposed custodian has interests that would shape the Weres' future. Rachel, David, Trent's circle, and the competing packs converge on an outcome intended to prevent immediate domination. The disorder also weakens the barriers holding Piscary. Skimmer's professional and personal loyalties prove more dangerous than her apparent role as a lawyer suggested, and Ivy is forced to confront how much of her past remains available for Piscary to use.

Rachel helps end the immediate struggle over the Focus without allowing it to become a stable instrument of control, though the political damage cannot be undone. During the larger crisis, Piscary escapes confinement. Kisten arranges to meet Rachel on his boat and then disappears. Rachel is found after a violent encounter with injuries and a blank space in her memory; Kisten's body is subsequently recovered. She knows he was murdered, but she cannot recall enough of the night to name the killer or explain precisely what happened. His death devastates both Rachel and Ivy, whose different bonds with him make the loss inseparable from their own difficult relationship.
