In Italy, Bond learns that supposed ally Kristatos, not accused smuggler Colombo, runs the heroin route; he joins Colombo in destroying it. Finally, Bond accompanies Milton and Liz Krest and Fidele Barbey in search of a rare fish. Krest poisons a reef and abuses Liz, then is found dead with the specimen in his mouth. Whether Liz or Barbey killed him remains unanswered.

James Bond is an established officer of the British Secret Service under M. The five stories collected here are separate episodes rather than stages of one continuous plot, so earlier cases supply Bond's professional background without creating a single unresolved premise. In the first story, a motorcycle dispatch rider carrying sensitive material from Allied headquarters near Paris is ambushed and killed on a familiar route. Bond is sent to examine how the attack could have been staged without warning. Working with local agent Mary Ann Russell, he reconstructs the killer's use of the road and discovers a concealed Soviet base hidden beneath wooded ground. The enemy unit has built specialized access and escape arrangements around impersonating or intercepting couriers. Bond takes the place of a rider to draw out the next attack, survives the attempt, and helps destroy the hidden operation, ending the immediate threat to the dispatch route.

The collection next turns to the murder of an elderly British couple, the Havelocks, who refused to sell their Jamaican home to former Gestapo officer von Hammerstein. M knew them personally and sends Bond on an unofficial mission to their killer's isolated estate near the Canadian border. Bond approaches with a rifle and discovers that Judy Havelock, the couple's daughter, has independently tracked the same men and brought a bow for her revenge. They combine their efforts against von Hammerstein, Major Gonzales, and the guards. The men responsible for the murders are killed, and Bond and Judy escape together. The outcome gives M the justice ordinary legal channels could not secure, while Judy personally confronts those who destroyed her family.

After an official dinner in the Bahamas, Bond dismisses another guest and his wife as painfully uninteresting. The Governor responds with the history of Philip and Rhoda Masters. Philip, a lonely colonial official, married the lively Rhoda, but she grew contemptuous of their life and had an affair. After she returned, Philip maintained the practical forms of marriage while deliberately ending every kindness, confidence, and gesture of emotional support. The punishment lasted until he sent her away and divorced her, damaging both of them. The Governor's point is that a relationship ends once its minimum reserve of fellow feeling has vanished, even if appearances remain. He then reveals that the supposedly dull woman Bond met was Rhoda in her later life, overturning Bond's easy judgment.

In Italy, Bond investigates heroin moving toward Britain. Aristotle Kristatos presents himself as an ally and blames the traffic on the smuggler Enrico Colombo. Bond approaches Colombo through Lisl Baum, but the encounter leads him to evidence that reverses the accusation: Kristatos is using his respectable position and foreign connections to run the narcotics operation, while Colombo is his criminal rival rather than the source of this shipment. After Lisl is killed, Bond joins Colombo's men in attacking Kristatos's coastal warehouse. They destroy the stored drugs and defeat the guards. Kristatos is killed while trying to escape, and the route Bond was sent to stop is broken.

The final story takes Bond to the Seychelles, where Fidele Barbey helps him locate a rare fish sought by wealthy American Milton Krest. Aboard Krest's yacht, Bond sees the man's arrogance toward Barbey and his wife, Liz, whom Krest humiliates and beats with a dried stingray tail. Krest uses poison to kill the life across an entire reef so he can collect the single specimen, disregarding Bond and Barbey's objections. Later Bond finds Krest dead with the Hildebrand fish forced into his mouth. The evidence does not establish whether Liz or Barbey killed him, and the culprit is never revealed. Liz proposes treating the death as an accident at sea, leaving Bond to face an unresolved killing whose victim had made himself hated by everyone aboard.

The collection's final story ends aboard Milton Krest's yacht after his expedition has killed an entire reef with poison to obtain the rare Hildebrand fish. Krest has also humiliated and beaten his wife, Liz. Bond later finds him dead, with the specimen forced into his mouth. The circumstances point toward someone aboard the yacht, but Bond cannot establish whether Liz Krest or Fidele Barbey killed him, and the story does not disclose a culprit. Liz moves quickly to frame the death as an accident at sea and asks for help managing its aftermath. Bond is left with the moral certainty of Krest's cruelty but no clean official truth about his death. Because this is a collection of independent stories, the close does not hand off a single continuing plot: Bond's status with the Secret Service is unchanged, while the murder aboard the yacht remains deliberately unresolved.
