A career soldier and gifted bugler transferred to G Company at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii in early 1941. Once a skilled welterweight boxer, he stopped fighting after blinding a sparring partner and now refuses to join his new company's team. Proud of his abilities and of the private code by which he lives, he will accept hardship more readily than let another man define his choices.

G Company's first sergeant, an exceptionally capable administrator who effectively runs the unit for its officers. Intelligent, hard-drinking, and contemptuous of much Army pretense, he protects his authority through close knowledge of the men and the institution. He recognizes Prewitt's stubbornness immediately and doubts that official pressure will change him.

The commanding officer of G Company, whose principal interest is building a championship boxing team as a route to advancement. He wants the newly transferred Prewitt in the ring and leaves much of the actual work of running the company to Warden.

A small, lively Italian American private in G Company who befriends Prewitt soon after his arrival. Funny, impulsive, and fiercely loyal, he resents intimidation and reacts quickly to insults. His friendship offers Prewitt companionship inside a unit determined to isolate him.

A noncommissioned officer in G Company and one of the men who applies the unit's unofficial punishment to Prewitt. Physically imposing and protected by his rank, he turns routine duty into harassment while presenting his actions as legitimate discipline.

A Jewish soldier and boxer in G Company whose place on the team gives him uncertain status among the men. Sensitive to hostility and desperate to prove both courage and belonging, he is caught between the approval boxing can earn him and the contempt surrounding him.

G Company's mess sergeant and a friend of Warden. Experienced, observant, and skeptical of officers, he has built a position of relative independence within Army life and speaks to Warden with unusual frankness.

Captain Holmes's wife, living with him and their son near Schofield Barracks. Beautiful, isolated, and bitter about her marriage, she has learned to conceal pain beneath the manners expected of an officer's wife. Warden is attracted to her despite the professional and personal danger.

A young woman who works as Lorene at Honolulu's New Congress Club. Controlled and ambitious, she treats her work as a temporary means of saving enough money to return to respectable civilian life on the mainland. She meets Prewitt without sharing his romantic view of independence.

The proprietor of the New Congress Club, where Lorene works. She manages the establishment with strict practical rules and provides the women a degree of protection while keeping careful control of the business and its customers.

The regiment's boxing coach, an influential figure in the athletic system surrounding Captain Holmes. He values Prewitt as a potential champion and participates in the sustained effort to bring the former boxer back into competition.

A stockade sergeant notorious among prisoners for sadistic abuse. Large, vindictive, and confident that his position protects him, he singles out men who resist his control and becomes the focus of Maggio's fear and hatred.
