A seventeen-year-old dhampir novice at St. Vladimir's Academy, part human and part vampire, training to become a guardian for the mortal Moroi. She is psychically bonded to her best friend Lissa Dragomir, able to feel her emotions and slip into her mind, and she quietly absorbs the darkness that Lissa's spirit magic leaves behind. Blunt, reckless and physically gifted, she is approaching the qualifying test that decides whether she will be allowed to graduate as a guardian, and she is still concealing a forbidden attachment to her instructor.

The last of the royal Dragomir line and Rose's best friend, a Moroi who wields spirit, a rare fifth element that lets her heal and compel others at a cost to her own mind. Steadier than she was, with medication and with Christian Ozera beside her, she has become popular at the Academy and is increasingly uneasy about how much of her illness Rose takes on through their bond.

A Russian guardian at the Academy, considered one of the finest fighters in Moroi society, and Rose's combat instructor. Reserved, disciplined and seven years older than her, he holds a hard line against the feelings the two of them share, on the grounds that a guardian distracted by love is a guardian who will fail the Moroi in his charge.

Rose's mother and a celebrated guardian, assigned for Rose's whole life to a Moroi lord overseas and content to leave her daughter to be raised by the Academy. Small, hard and formidably skilled, she comes to the school on business connected to the recent Strigoi attacks. Rose's resentment of her long absence sits between them from their first conversation.

A red-haired dhampir novice and one of Rose's closest friends, cheerful, quick with a joke, and openly in love with her. He is impatient to prove himself as a fighter and frustrated by how much of a novice's training consists of theory and restraint.

A dhampir novice who trains alongside Rose and Mason, quieter than his friend and steady under pressure. He is usually the one arguing for caution.

A Moroi shunned by most of his peers because his parents chose to become Strigoi, sarcastic and quick to expect the worst of people, and now Lissa's boyfriend. He is one of the very few Moroi willing to use his fire magic as a weapon, a position his society finds close to unthinkable.

Christian's aunt, who took him in after his parents were killed and who carries burn scars on her face from that night. Warm, blunt and widely liked, she travels and speaks for a position most Moroi refuse to entertain: that Moroi should be taught to fight with their magic rather than leaving every risk to their guardians. She is a long-standing friend of Dimitri.

A royal Moroi in his early twenties and the queen's great-nephew, who drinks, smokes and drifts through a life with no obligations attached to it. He is also a spirit user, which lets him see the auras around people and walk into their dreams, and he identifies what Lissa is almost immediately. He flirts with Rose without pause and proves harder to dismiss than he first appears.

A non-royal Moroi girl who spent the previous year tormenting Rose and Lissa and was afterwards frozen out by the royals whose approval she wanted. She appears at the ski resort subdued and unwelcome, no longer part of any crowd.

The reigning Moroi queen and Adrian's great-aunt, who arrives at the resort with a large entourage. Imperious and used to deference, she takes a pointed interest in the company her great-nephew is keeping.

The captain of the Academy's guardians, responsible for the novices' training and their assignments. Practical and even-handed, she is one of the few authority figures who deals with Rose plainly rather than through discipline.

An old and powerful Strigoi, unhurried and fond of an audience, who keeps human servants and treats captives as entertainment. His age makes him far stronger and faster than the newly turned Strigoi guardians are trained to expect.
