In short (whole book)

Dash commits the Cygnus Realm to war after the Deepers attack League forces and support Adan Kitzbuell's collaboration. Investigation of living torpedoes, Dark Metal 2, captive species, and resource gates exposes an extragalactic network that strips occupied worlds. A gate at Backwater leads to a remote Deeper breeding base, while Bettman's capture reveals a broad collaborator network. After defending the gate and aiding Awakaz and Tanther, the Realm launches a coordinated assault through both the Maw and Backwater. Dash's strike group and Leira's fleet seize the gate and break the base, though 108 Realm personnel die and many ships and mechs are lost or crippled. The surviving Deepers retreat to an unknown destination. Evidence from a fallen battle prince shows that its pilot was a transformed human, and Dash concludes that the Deepers and Golden are the same species. The Realm holds both ends of the gate but faces an unfinished war.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Dash, known as the Messenger, leads the Cygnus Realm and pilots the archetype with Sentinel. Leira serves as his second in command and pilots Swift. Their allies include the Rimworld League, while the forge and its AI Custodian provide the Realm with industrial and scientific support. Established personnel include fleet commander Benzel, Kosan mech pilot Jameson, Talon pilot Amy, and electronic-warfare specialist Conover. Dash's wider command also includes warships, anchors, ground troops, and artificial intelligences. Earlier conflicts have brought the Realm into contact with the Golden and their use of dark-metal technology to alter and exploit humans. The Realm enters this campaign as a capable but finite power whose leaders must protect allied worlds while responding to threats beyond their established territory.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Dash reaches a pursued League flotilla by taking the archetype and two rookie-piloted Orions through a lethal route near the Maw. One rookie dies, but the survivors and League ships destroy two Deeper cruisers. Salvage yields semi-living antimatter torpedoes and a new dark-metal form, DM2, which draws power from the dark between. The Realm can detect it but cannot yet reproduce it. The League consul then asks Dash to investigate Adan Kitzbuell, a magnate seeking control of war production. At Pyrewells, Dash, Leira, and Jameson find an organic Deeper installation signaling toward the inner system, while Kitzbuell escapes with armed ships. They catch his force attacking Harlequin with Deeper-enhanced technology and defeat most of it, but Kitzbuell escapes again. Survivors at a ruined research station reveal a mysterious object beyond the Oort cloud. Further analysis links it to gate technology. An experimental dark-metal search and Jameson's dangerous barycenter translation test suggest that extreme mass, including the Maw, may permit nearly instantaneous travel toward a Deeper base beyond the galaxy.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

The Realm improves its mechs with lighter dark-metal armor and locates a signal outside the galactic edge. Dash leads a compact force through the Maw, destroys a Deeper platform, and captures Adan Kitzbuell along with a hybrid ship built from Deeper and League technology. Kitzbuell identifies a large humanoid construct as a battle prince, but his implant destroys itself and kills him during interrogation. Data from his ship points to Bloody Star, where the Realm captures a hidden installation and finds signs of humans living under Deeper control. An ark-incubator nearby contains preserved members of many captive species and the remains of a lone survivor. The Realm recovers DM2 and data from both sites. The operation confirms that the Deepers have overrun multiple peoples, but the purpose of their captive collection remains unclear. As Dash returns, the Deepers mount a large assault on Edge. Realm and League forces suffer severe losses before Benzel's reinforcements arrive. The enemy withdraws after testing the coalition's defenses, leaving Dash convinced that a larger attack may follow.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

After the costly defense of Edge, evidence from the ark-incubator leads the Realm to Fulcrum, where Dash saves a planetary gate from destruction. The surrounding Deeper complex is harvesting matter, air, and water for shipment through the gate. Nearby refugees explain that displaced people are sent to Backwater and that its gate opens onto a near-vacuum world far outside the galaxy. Dash commits the Realm to seize this route and liberate occupied worlds. At Awakaz, Conover commandeers Deeper water tankers so their cargo can be returned as rain, recovering much of the stolen water and winning the planet's cooperation. The operation also suggests that the Deepers may be unable to function normally on planetary surfaces. Backwater remains suspicious. Bettman, its sole human representative, has missing memories and a scar, while an antenna near the settlement emits unexplained pulses toward the gate. With probes failing beyond it, Dash takes seventeen mechs through and finds an enormous breeding facility about 6,000 light years past the galactic edge. A waiting fleet forces a damaging retreat. Back at the settlement, Bettman and an armed accomplice attack the refugees and try to escape, exposing them as collaborators.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

A Deeper counterattack pours through the Backwater gate. Realm troops hold the ground assault until a warship emerges and cripples several mechs. Dash uses the archetype's matter-antimatter weapon at low yield, destroying the attackers and leaving the ship's wreck blocking the gate, though twenty-two soldiers have already died. Bettman is taken to the forge and forced to identify her associates. Communications among the prisoners establish a far-reaching collaborator network that receives Deeper arms, ships, and troops, although every accusation still requires verification. The Realm also assists Tanther, accepting intelligence from a former collaborator judged to be truthful. Benzel's divided task force defeats the Deeper flotilla, survives hidden antimatter torpedoes, and lands Colonel Willis's troops on an occupied mining platform. Meanwhile, an alien first arbiter takes a former rogue leader into custody and opens tentative alliance talks with the Realm. A destroyed League patrol yields part of a rapidly decaying battle prince, and Dash recovers the fragment for analysis.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

The Deepers attack the forge with false sensor returns and a short-range weapon that cuts through armor, but Dash realizes their true target is the quarantined battle prince remains. Conover and Kristen defeat the deception, while an Orion pilot dies intercepting a torpedo aimed at the evidence. The failed raid confirms its importance. The Realm prepares a two-part strike on the breeding base: Dash's mech group will translate through the Maw, while Leira leads nearly one hundred ships through Backwater after engineers create a temporary low-density passage to its gate. Dash accepts a below-threshold transit prediction, and his force emerges inside the enemy formation. The arrival destroys or damages several Deeper ships but costs Orions and leaves Jameson and Amy nearly out of action. Leira launches without Dash's signal as the atmospheric corridor collapses, and Benzel brings the fleet through behind her. Dash, Leira, and the junior mech commander breach the base. A fallen battle prince exposes a transformed human pilot, proving these machines are not autonomous creatures. The Realm takes the base and both ends of the gate at the cost of 108 dead, about twice as many wounded, and extensive ship and mech losses. Amy and Jameson survive, but their mechs need rebuilding. Surviving Deepers withdraw to an unknown intergalactic destination. Dash concludes that they and the Golden are the same race, leaving the Realm with a strategic victory but an unfinished war.

How does it end? (ending)

Nearly a week after the assault, only half of the Realm fleet has returned to the forge. The Realm has lost 108 people, with roughly twice that number wounded, as well as major ships, smaller vessels, fighters, Orions, and Perseids. Amy and Jameson survive, but Talon and Polaris require almost complete reconstruction. The junior mech commander leads the serviceable units still clearing the captured base, while the Realm holds both ends of the Backwater gate. The Deepers have lost their breeding base, gate access, weapons platforms, and at least ten capital ships, yet their surviving force escapes toward an unknown intergalactic location. No immediate attacks are reported at allied worlds, but the withdrawal is temporary rather than a peace. The collaborator investigation remains active, and new alliances are still developing. The transformed pilot and recovered mechanical hand establish for Dash that the Deepers and Golden are one species using altered humans as instruments, leaving their larger purpose and remaining infrastructure unresolved.
