Commander of Task Force Black. In the aftermath of Operation Olympic, he accepts responsibility for the heavy losses, the dangerous decoy mission, and Skippy's apparent loss while Valkyrie escapes with the Collector.

Skippy (Supporting)

Captain of Valkyrie and Joe's operational counterpart. She commands a damaged ship carrying the Collector while coordinating repairs, security checks, and the effort to survive without Skippy.

Star Team Tiger Technical Sergeant (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An operator from Star Team Tiger whose uncontrolled fall from suborbit is slowed by a concealed Skippy submind in his damaged suit. An improvised parachute gives him a chance to survive, but his condition on the surface remains uncertain.

Downed Air Force major (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An Air Force fighter pilot stranded on the surface after being shot down. With communications disrupted and enemy forces nearby, she remains separated from other surviving groups.

Leader of the decoy-side recovery group during Operation Olympic. He and his companions are stranded on the surface after protecting the real extraction, with enemy forces closing in and communications disrupted.

Derek Bonsu (Supporting)

Captain of Flying Dutchman. He survives the ship's destruction in a damaged escape pod with Perkins and other personnel, depending on a maintenance tug to keep the pod clear of debris and prevent a fatal descent.

Perkins (Supporting)

A senior human commander who escapes the destruction of Flying Dutchman with Derek Bonsu and members of her staff. Their damaged pod is rescued by a maintenance tug before it can fall back toward the planet.

Maintenance tug operator (Supporting)

An admiral working through the Ethics and Compliance Office. He runs covert operations and has Kinsta embedded inside the Inquisitors, but an apparent treason inquiry threatens both the agent and the operation.

Kinsta (Supporting)

Scorandum's covert agent within the Office of Special Inquiries. He warns of evidence supporting a treason case, only to learn that the inquiry may be designed to expose his true allegiance.

Frey (Supporting)

Commander of Star Team Razor. She leads her operators back into a contested evacuation zone to relieve surrounded troops, judging that the team remains capable despite its recent losses.

Nagatha (Supporting)

The Flying Dutchman AI preserved as a backup within Skippy before the operation. The surviving copy lacks later memories and cannot yet be restored without a newly grown compatible matrix.

Elder defense construct (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

An Elder defense construct found near the star identified through the Collector. Valkyrie prepares to approach it while its condition, purpose, and response remain unknown.

Vortex 37 (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 16

An independent Elder defense construct discovered near the Collector's source star. It can generate a subspace-divergence wave, but it is partly degraded, lacks its intended control AI, and is expected to burn out if activated.

Major Carell Holmquist (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 20

Frey's former executive officer and designated successor. After her presumed death inside Vortex 37, he takes command of Star Team Razor and begins preparing its operators for a possible return to the construct.

Margaret Adams (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 21

Joe's wife, living at Jaguar with their children. She describes the colony's environmental damage and growing civilian strain, then helps Joe reconsider whether Skippy's list of lost Elder AIs is truly complete.

Admiral Chatterjee (Supporting)

The commander responsible for Jaguar during its environmental and civilian emergency. Joe entrusts him with the secret that Skippy survived and asks him to prevent that information from spreading.

A hostile Elder AI believed lost within a star. Joe's team steals two dormant AIs from a Maxolhx museum and plans to search their memories for clues to where Unit 52 fell.

Commander of the Charlemagne battle group. He brings a supporting force and a star carrier from Jaguar toward Lundervik for Joe's operation to locate and recover Unit 52.
