Giovanni's Room recap

David, an American in France, remembers the choices that brought him to the eve of Giovanni's execution. While his fiancée Hella is in Spain considering marriage, David meets Giovanni, an Italian bartender, through his older acquaintance Jacques. David moves into Giovanni's cramped Paris room, and the two begin an intense relationship, but David's shame makes him resist any future Giovanni imagines. When Hella returns, David leaves Giovanni and tries to restore the heterosexual life he believes he should want. Abandoned and without work, Giovanni goes back to the bar owner Guillaume; after Guillaume uses and rejects him, Giovanni kills him and is condemned to death. David's effort to live with Hella fails as he continues pursuing men. She discovers the truth and leaves for America. Alone on the morning of Giovanni's execution, David can no longer avoid the human cost of his denial.

David spends a sleepless night in a house in southern France. Hella, the woman he expected to marry, has left, and Giovanni is scheduled to be executed in Paris at dawn. David looks back on the evasions that brought them to this point. After losing his mother as a child, he grew up with a father who wanted them to be companions and who held conventional ideas about how a man should live. As an adolescent, David shared a joyful and intimate night with his friend Joey, then recoiled the next morning and treated Joey cruelly. Rather than acknowledge the desire the encounter exposed, he tried to bury it. As an adult he drifted to Paris, became involved with Hella, and proposed marriage. She went alone to Spain to decide what she wanted, leaving David with little money and no settled plan while he waited for her answer.

Short of money, David contacts Jacques, an older acquaintance who lends him cash and takes him out for the evening. At Guillaume's bar, David meets Giovanni, the striking Italian bartender. Their attraction is immediate, though David hides behind mockery and insists to himself that he can remain detached. Jacques recognizes what is happening and urges David not to answer every possibility of affection with shame, even as Jacques's own loneliness and use of money complicate his advice. After the bar closes, the group continues through the Paris night. David and Giovanni talk more privately, and Giovanni's confidence draws David past his resistance. By morning they leave together, beginning a relationship David wants while already fearing what it means.

David moves into Giovanni's small room in a Paris suburb. The enclosed, unfinished space becomes their shared world as they settle into an intense domestic life. Giovanni speaks of his past in Italy, including the loss that drove him away, and imagines that the room and their relationship can be remade. David feels both tenderness and confinement. He cannot accept the life Giovanni offers as a legitimate future and treats Hella's eventual return as an escape route. As money grows scarce and Giovanni loses his position at Guillaume's bar, strain replaces the freedom of their first nights. David withdraws emotionally and seeks distance, while Giovanni understands that David is preparing to leave but cannot make him speak honestly about it.

Hella returns from Spain ready to accept David's proposal and build a married life. David leaves Giovanni and resumes his relationship with her, presenting their reunion as the answer to his uncertainty. Yet he cannot simply erase the life in Giovanni's room. He seeks out Sue, an American woman, and sleeps with her in an attempt to reassure himself, then recognizes that he has used her and retreats from the intimacy she hopes might continue. Giovanni, unemployed and abandoned, becomes increasingly desperate. When David encounters him again, Giovanni accuses him of choosing safety and social approval over love. David still refuses to alter his course, leaving Giovanni with little support beyond men such as Jacques, whose offers carry their own imbalance.

Giovanni returns to Guillaume hoping to recover his job. Guillaume makes his help conditional on sex and then dismisses Giovanni afterward. Enraged and humiliated, Giovanni strangles him. He takes money and tries to escape, but the police capture him; he is convicted and sentenced to the guillotine. David and Hella leave Paris for the south of France, attempting to live as an ordinary engaged couple, but David remains restless and unavailable. He spends nights away and pursues encounters with men. Hella finally finds him with a sailor and sees that the future he promised her was founded on concealment. Grieving and angry, she decides to return to America without him.

Alone after Hella's departure, David waits through the last hours before Giovanni's execution. He imagines Giovanni in prison with his lawyer and a priest, approaching death while David remains free. The distance cannot protect David from recognizing that his fear shaped the choices that isolated Giovanni and wounded Hella. At dawn, Giovanni is executed. David prepares to leave the rented house and tries to cast away the notice reporting Giovanni's fate by tearing it into pieces. The wind catches the fragments and carries them back toward him. The gesture fails to sever him from the past, and the story ends with David facing the memory and responsibility he has repeatedly tried to escape.

After David abandons their life together, Giovanni returns in desperation to Guillaume's bar. Guillaume exploits him and then refuses to help him; Giovanni kills Guillaume and is captured after a futile attempt to escape. He is sentenced to death. Meanwhile, David attempts to resume a conventional future with Hella, but he continues seeking men and cannot give her the honest commitment she expects. Hella discovers the truth, understands that their planned marriage cannot survive it, and leaves to return to America. On the morning set for Giovanni's execution, David remains alone in southern France, imagining Giovanni's final moments and confronting the destruction caused by his fear and denial. He tears up the official notice of the execution, but the wind blows its pieces back toward him, leaving him unable to discard either Giovanni's memory or his responsibility.
