Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch characters

By Terry Pratchett

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Aziraphale (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

An angel who has been stationed on Earth since the Garden of Eden, now living as the fussy, book-loving proprietor of a rare and antiquarian bookshop in London. Fond of good food, old books, and the comforts of human life, he has grown far too attached to the world to want it to end. Over the millennia he has developed an unlikely, careful friendship with his opposite number among the demons.

Crowley (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A demon who was present as the serpent in Eden and has worked Earth ever since, presenting himself as a stylish, sunglasses-wearing operator with a beloved vintage Bentley. Less wicked than easily bored, he has come to enjoy the modern world and its pleasures, and has no real appetite for its destruction. He and the angel Aziraphale have quietly become friends across the divide between their sides.

Adam Young

Appears from the start

An imaginative, charismatic eleven-year-old boy growing up in the ordinary English village of Lower Tadfield, the ringleader of a small gang of local children. Unknown to the adults around him and even to himself, he is no ordinary child: through a mix-up at his birth he was raised in this quiet village rather than where the forces of Heaven and Hell intended, and enormous power sleeps in him.

Anathema Device (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A young woman who is a practicing witch and occultist, and the last descendant of a seventeenth-century prophetess. She has spent her life guided by an inherited book of eerily accurate predictions, and she comes to Lower Tadfield on its instructions, trying to work out how to head off the disaster the prophecies foretell.

Newton Pulsifer (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A mild, awkward young man and hopeless amateur with computers and machines, which tend to break in his presence. Looking for something more meaningful, he answers an odd recruiting notice and becomes a modern member of a nearly defunct witch-hunting order, a role that sends him toward Lower Tadfield.

Sergeant Shadwell (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The cantankerous, unwashed, and deeply paranoid leader of the Witchfinder Army, a centuries-old witch-hunting organization now reduced to almost nothing but himself. Gruff and suspicious of everyone, he keeps the order technically alive by padding its rolls and cadging funds, and takes on Newton Pulsifer as a new recruit.

Madame Tracy (Minor)

Appears from the start

Shadwell's neighbor, a kindly middle-aged woman who works as a part-time medium and offers other discreet services. Warm-hearted and unbothered by Shadwell's grumbling, she takes an interest in the sour old witchfinder living down the hall.

Agnes Nutter (Minor)

Appears from the start

A seventeenth-century English witch and prophetess whose book, The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, is the only wholly correct book of predictions ever written. Long dead before the main events, she foresaw the future with uncanny, often maddeningly cryptic precision, and her descendants have puzzled over her prophecies ever since.
