In short (whole book)
Riley Cruz follows clues left by Amelia Hunt to recover Zogon's chalice, only to discover a hidden goat-shifter family and learn that Zara Bellarose is her biological mother. Stored memories show that Amelia and Santiago rescued and raised Riley after uncovering a covert plan to seize her as a prophetic vessel. Riley's allies rescue a young elemental named Sierra and reject the Enclave's attempt to claim her. At Stull Cemetery, Bellarose reveals that Sierra is Riley's sister before demons tear open the veil from Hell. Riley and the assembled defenders empower the Seal of Solomon, and Garth carries it through the breach, sealing the veil but becoming trapped in Hell. Six months later, Garth rules Hell and speaks with Helen weekly, Sierra lives safely with Riley and Helen, and Riley turns GOAT headquarters into a center for supernatural teenagers. Bellarose and the demons that escaped before the seal remain at large.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Riley Cruz, a goat shifter who can disrupt magic, leads the artifact-retrieval team GOAT with a close circle of supernatural allies. Nash Mitchell is her field partner, Max Volkov is her wolf-shifter partner, Helen supplies witchcraft and research, and Dez handles technical investigation. Nash's rooster, Garth, hosts a vengeance demon and has repeatedly proved more capable than an ordinary animal. Riley recently survived a blood-rune attack in Kansas City. Martha Matthews was detained, but Riley still suspects that the illusion-wielding artifact hunter Zara Bellarose may be connected to the larger operation. Riley's adoptive mother, Amelia Hunt, is dead, but she left Riley a rune-marked ring and a trail encoded in childhood stories. Those clues now point toward Zogon's chalice, a demon vessel sought by dangerous rivals and tied to a prophecy that could either prevent or enable a demon incursion.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Riley and Nash search New Mexico for locations hidden in Amelia's stories. A desert lead fails, but a flower-covered adobe house directs them to the New Mexico Museum of Art, where a painting by Maria Baca points toward Amelia's former Santa Fe studio. Meanwhile, Dez discovers that Zara Bellarose appears to be tracking the search, and Max Volkov reports that vampires have shifted their attention from rare books to demon artifacts. Maria's studio has been ransacked and its artwork destroyed, although the safe is empty and relocked. Maria herself has moved to California for surgery and is safe, leaving the attacker and motive unknown. The only useful clue is Riley's ring, whose markings remain unreadable. Dez's tracking places Bellarose back in Toronto, but the team suspects that someone connected to the Enclave may be leaking information. Riley returns to Kansas City to research the ring and finds Max's mother, Irina Volkov, visiting with Nadia, whom Irina introduces as Max's fiancée.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Nadia explains that her parents and Max's arranged their match in childhood and that she did not revive it. Max rejects the arrangement, identifies Riley as his mate, and tells Irina that she must respect Riley if she wants continued contact. Research into Riley's ring stalls until Garth recognizes its markings as demonic. The markings, activated after Riley borrowed another witch's magic, expand into coordinates for an island in Norway. Riley and Nash reach the island and are taken into a hidden settlement of goat shifters who resist most magic. Its elder recognizes Riley as Henrik's daughter and confirms that Riley was born into the herd. He says her biological mother, Rosa, killed Henrik during a conflict over Riley. Amelia originally arrived seeking Zogon's chalice, then learned that her hidden assignment was to take the child. With the elder's consent, Amelia instead raised Riley. As armed intruders approach the settlement, Riley's grandfather gives her a map to a mountain vault where Amelia and Santiago later concealed materials for her.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
Riley and Nash survive a sequence of vault traps modeled on games Santiago taught Riley in childhood. Inside they find Zogon's chalice and crystals containing Amelia's and Santiago's memories. Zara Bellarose has used an illusion to conceal her arrival in Norway. She burns the goat-shifter settlement, identifies Riley as the prophetic vessel, and reveals that she is Riley's biological mother. Riley briefly siphons Bellarose's elemental magic, but Bellarose withdraws. Riley's grandfather dies after confirming that he approved Amelia and Santiago's adoption of her. Back in Kansas City, Riley gives Cage Sato the chalice but conceals the crystals and her identity as the vessel. The recovered memories show that Steve, an Enclave employee tied to a covert faction called Cerberus, ordered Santiago to substitute a false chalice and capture the vessel. Amelia had been recruited under false pretenses and did not know the target was a child. Once Amelia and Santiago understood the operation, they swore to protect Riley, took her from the island with her grandfather's approval, and raised her as their daughter. The memories also establish that Rosa was Zara Bellarose. Helen identifies Riley as both a null and a rare siphon, and Riley begins learning to retain and direct stolen magic.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Research shows that Bellarose once held an Enclave-appointed seat on the Witches' Council but was removed for abusing her power. Her seer father disappeared years earlier, and the current status of Cerberus remains uncertain. Garth warns that the veil will fall at the next blood moon, only a week away. Dez identifies Bellarose's cloaked captive as the missing elemental child, a young wielder of water and air whom Bellarose plans to auction to vampires. A recovered memory explains that Amelia and Santiago suppressed young Riley's abilities while secretly preparing her through games after she instinctively controlled Santiago's wind magic. Riley trains with fire elemental Liv Monroe, then recruits Nate Irons and his shifters to help protect the child. Riley, Nash, Dez, and Helen mount a deception in Toronto. Riley allows herself to be captured while Helen, disguised as the child, draws Bellarose and her guards away. During Dez's blackout, Nash reaches the real captive, restrains her uncontrolled elemental attack, and disguises her as Helen. Riley escapes by shifting into goat form. Helen survives the destruction of the decoy vehicle, rejoins the others, and the team leaves Toronto with the child while Bellarose remains misdirected.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
The rescued child is twelve-year-old Sierra. At the Kansas City airport, Cage Sato surrounds Riley's group with Enclave forces and demands Sierra's surrender, backed by a sniper threat. Riley refuses. Max Volkov's pack, Helen's witches, Nate Irons, and allied gargoyles arrive in Sierra's defense, while Max's brother Aleksei withdraws his Shadows rather than help seize her. Riley brings Sierra to a guarded headquarters and begins helping her practice water magic without fear or punishment. Max also earns Sierra's trust by giving her freedom and teaching her a simple piano song. With roughly sixty hours remaining, the allies need the complete prophecy, but Callie's Enclave blood oath prevents her from speaking it. They summon her internal demon, Rom, who provides the missing information. The defense requires five earthly breeds, elemental powers, a vessel, a child of water and air, and supernatural guardians. Riley discloses that she is the vessel and identifies Sierra's role. Garth recognizes himself as the hellfire guardian. Sato joins the meeting, reveals that he is a dragon who can serve as the sky guardian, and brings the Seal of Solomon, which must be charged with the elements to close the veil.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
The alliance prepares at Stull Cemetery during the blood moon. Bea, Max Volkov, Dez, Callie, and Nash fill the five earthly-breed roles. Sierra supplies water and air, Alice and Janice combine their magic for earth, and Liv agrees to channel hellfire from Riley's demon dagger. Zara Bellarose infiltrates the defenders and reveals that Sierra is also her daughter, making Sierra Riley's sister. At totality, demons tear open the veil from Hell rather than vampires opening it from Earth. Bellarose creates hostile copies of the defenders while Riley gathers the required power. The Seal of Solomon does not activate until Callie adds spirit magic. Sato explains that the completed seal must cross through the breach. Liv tries and is thrown into hellfire; Nate Irons saves her but loses a hand. Garth carries the seal through instead, transforms into his full demon form, and closes the veil from Hell, trapping himself there. Six months later, Garth rules Hell as the High Crown and contacts Helen weekly. Irons has a magical prosthetic. The Enclave permits Sierra to remain with Riley and Helen after they threaten to expose its conduct. Riley turns GOAT headquarters into the Guild of Adventurous Teens, and Sierra helps create the new center. Bellarose remains absent, and demons that escaped before the sealing are still unlocated.
How does it end? (ending)
During the blood moon at Stull Cemetery, Zara Bellarose reveals that Sierra is her daughter and therefore Riley's sister. Demons open the veil from Hell, overturning the defenders' expectation of a vampire ritual on Earth. Riley collects the needed elemental powers, and Callie's spirit magic completes the Seal of Solomon. The seal must cross to the side that opened the breach. Liv's attempt fails, and Nate Irons loses a hand while rescuing her. Garth then enters in his full demon form and seals the veil from Hell, leaving himself stranded there. Six months later, Irons uses a magical prosthetic, while Garth has claimed the High Crown and communicates with Helen each week. The Enclave allows Sierra to remain with Riley and Helen after the group threatens to expose its actions. Riley and Max Volkov remain together, and Riley converts GOAT headquarters into the Guild of Adventurous Teens, with Sierra helping shape the new center. Bellarose's location and suspected Enclave ties remain unknown, as do the whereabouts of demons that escaped before the breach closed.
