Orphaned Pip helps a frightening escaped convict, then becomes ashamed of his humble life after meeting wealthy Miss Havisham and her proud ward Estella. When an anonymous benefactor pays for him to become a London gentleman, Pip assumes Miss Havisham intends him for Estella and grows distant from the faithful blacksmith Joe. His true patron is instead Abel Magwitch, the convict Pip aided as a child, who made a fortune after transportation. Pip overcomes his shock and risks himself to help Magwitch escape, but the attempt fails and Magwitch dies in custody after losing his fortune. Pip's debts and illness bring Joe back to care for him without resentment. Humbled, Pip learns that Joe has married Biddy, works with Herbert abroad, and rebuilds his life honestly. Much later he meets the widowed, chastened Estella at ruined Satis House, and they part no more.

Pip, an orphan living with his severe sister and her kind blacksmith husband Joe, meets an escaped convict in a marshland churchyard. Terrified by the man's threats, Pip steals food and a file for him, though compassion mixes with fear. Soldiers later ask Joe to repair handcuffs and take the household to watch the search. Two convicts are caught fighting. To protect Pip, the man Pip helped claims he stole the food himself. The incident ends without Pip's theft being exposed, but it leaves him with a lasting mixture of guilt and sympathy.

Pip is sent to entertain the rich, reclusive Miss Havisham at Satis House. He finds her still dressed for a wedding that never occurred, surrounded by the decaying remains of the interrupted celebration. Her ward Estella mocks Pip's speech, clothes, and working hands. Pip becomes infatuated with her and ashamed of the forge and of Joe, despite Joe's unfailing kindness. Miss Havisham encourages his emotional dependence on Estella but eventually arranges for Pip to be formally apprenticed to Joe. Pip tries to educate himself with Biddy's help, while the bitter forge worker Orlick becomes increasingly hostile. An attack leaves Mrs Joe badly injured, and Biddy comes to care for the household.

The lawyer Jaggers announces that Pip has great expectations from an anonymous benefactor and must move to London to be educated as a gentleman. Pip assumes Miss Havisham is preparing him to marry Estella. He leaves Joe and Biddy with growing condescension, though Joe asks for nothing from him. In London, Pip befriends Herbert Pocket, learns the story of Miss Havisham's abandonment before her wedding, and meets Jaggers's clerk Wemmick. He also joins a circle that includes the unpleasant Bentley Drummle. Pip acquires expensive habits and debts. When Joe visits, Pip is embarrassed by him, a response that exposes how far his expectations have separated him from the people who genuinely love him.

Pip returns home after Mrs Joe's death but does little to repair his relationships with Joe and Biddy. Estella comes to London and calmly warns Pip that she has been trained not to love, yet he persists in imagining a future with her. Pip secretly uses part of his allowance to help Herbert enter a business partnership. On his twenty-third birthday he still receives no name for his patron. The mystery ends when the convict from the marshes, now calling himself Abel Magwitch, appears at Pip's rooms. Having prospered after transportation, Magwitch has devoted his fortune to making Pip a gentleman in gratitude for the child's kindness. Pip is horrified to learn that his wealth has no connection to Miss Havisham and that Estella was never promised to him.

Because returning from transportation can cost Magwitch his life, Pip and Herbert hide him and plan an escape by river. Magwitch tells them about Compeyson, the polished criminal who exploited him and received a lighter sentence because he appeared respectable. Pip realizes Compeyson was also the man who abandoned Miss Havisham. Wemmick warns that Pip's rooms are being watched. Pip confronts Miss Havisham about the false hopes she encouraged; she agrees to finance Herbert's future and begins to recognize the harm she has done. Estella nevertheless marries the brutal Drummle. Miss Havisham's dress later catches fire, and Pip burns his hands while saving her, but she is badly injured.

Orlick lures Pip to an isolated building, admits his hatred and his attack on Mrs Joe, and prepares to kill him. Herbert and others arrive in time to rescue Pip. Pip then joins Herbert and Magwitch in the planned river escape, but a pursuing boat intercepts them. Magwitch and Compeyson struggle in the water; Compeyson drowns, while the injured Magwitch is captured. His property is forfeited, ending Pip's expectations. Pip stays beside him through trial and illness and, before Magwitch dies, tells him that the daughter he lost is alive and loved. Overwhelmed by debt and fever, Pip is nursed by Joe, who also settles his creditors. Pip returns home intending to ask Biddy to marry him but finds that she and Joe have married. He later works with Herbert abroad and becomes self-supporting. Years afterward, he meets the widowed Estella at the ruins of Satis House. Both have been changed by suffering, and they leave together with no expectation of another parting.

Pip and Herbert try to send Magwitch abroad, but the authorities intercept their boat. Compeyson dies in the struggle, Magwitch is captured, and the fortune intended for Pip is lost to the state. Before Magwitch dies, Pip comforts him and tells him that his lost daughter is alive and has become a beautiful woman. Pip then falls gravely ill and awakens to find Joe caring for him and paying his debts. Humbled, Pip returns home intending to marry Biddy, only to discover that she and Joe have just married each other. He accepts their happiness and later works abroad with Herbert, gradually repaying Joe. Years afterward, he meets a changed, widowed Estella in the ruins of Satis House. They leave together in friendship, and Pip sees no prospect of another separation.
