Anita Blake raises zombies for a living and executes legally condemned vampires in St. Louis. When vampires begin dying, Willie McCoy asks her to investigate, and the city's master, Nikolaos, forces her to accept by threatening people around her. Anita moves through vampire clubs and private gatherings with help from Jean-Claude, a powerful vampire, Phillip, a human drawn to vampires, and Edward, a professional hunter. Phillip is murdered, and the trail leads to the animator Zachary, whose continued existence depends on the killings, and to Nikolaos's protection of him. Anita and Edward attack Nikolaos's refuge, destroy Zachary and several vampires, and Anita kills Nikolaos. Jean-Claude succeeds her as master of the city. He has also given Anita two mystical marks, creating a connection she refuses to treat as ownership.

Anita Blake works for Animators, Inc., raising the dead so they can answer questions, settle disputes, or provide testimony. She also carries legal authority to execute vampires under warrant. Willie McCoy, a vampire she knew while he was alive, asks her to investigate unexplained vampire deaths. Anita refuses to work for vampires. Her employer, Bert Vaughn, would prefer that she accept profitable work, but Anita distrusts both the client and the politics behind the request. The approach nevertheless tells her that St. Louis's vampires are frightened and that their own leaders have not solved the killings.

Anita attends her friend Catherine's bachelorette outing at Guilty Pleasures, a vampire-run strip club. Monica Vespucci has arranged the evening and appears notably at ease in the club. Anita meets Jean-Claude, a powerful vampire whose voice and presence can influence people, and becomes entangled in the problem she declined. The vampires use Catherine's safety as leverage, making it clear that Anita cannot simply walk away. Jean-Claude is dangerous, but he also becomes an intermediary between Anita and the authority controlling the city's vampires.

Anita begins tracing the dead vampires through St. Louis's clubs and private vampire gatherings. Phillip, a human who repeatedly seeks close contact with vampires, acts as a guide to that world. Police detective Dolph also uses Anita's expertise when violence crosses into ordinary criminal investigation. Edward, a hunter feared by vampires, offers information and practical help, though Anita knows his interest includes the chance to locate and kill powerful targets. The separate pressures leave her balancing a murder inquiry, police obligations, and the need to keep Catherine beyond the vampires' reach.

Anita is brought before Nikolaos, the city's master vampire, who looks like a child but is centuries old. Nikolaos orders her to find the killer and enforces the demand through threats and subordinates such as Aubrey. Jean-Claude's position within this hierarchy remains complicated: he helps Anita survive encounters with stronger vampires, but each intervention also increases the supernatural connection between them. Anita continues the investigation because refusal would endanger her friends, while looking for a way to act without surrendering control to either Nikolaos or Jean-Claude.

The investigation turns personal when Phillip is killed and left for Anita to find. His death removes a vulnerable witness and demonstrates that Nikolaos's circle can reach anyone who helps her. Anita uses her abilities as an animator to call Phillip back as a zombie so he can identify what happened. The act gives her essential evidence but cannot restore the man she knew. With the killer now connected to both animation and vampire power, Anita and Edward prepare to confront the people behind the murders instead of continuing to work within Nikolaos's rules.

Phillip's testimony and Anita's investigation expose Zachary, an animator using the vampire deaths to sustain his unnatural continued life, and show that Nikolaos's regime has protected the arrangement. Anita and Edward attack Nikolaos's refuge. Zachary and several of the master's vampires are destroyed, and Anita kills Nikolaos, ending her control of St. Louis. Jean-Claude survives the struggle and becomes the new master of the city. During the case he has placed two mystical marks on Anita, creating a bond that he regards as the beginning of a human-servant relationship. Anita rejects that claim and leaves the conflict unresolved. She has solved the killings and survived a master vampire, but she finishes the case tied to Nikolaos's successor in a way she did not choose.

Anita's investigation identifies the animator Zachary as the immediate agent behind the vampire deaths; he has prolonged his existence through forbidden magic, with Nikolaos's regime enabling the killings. After Phillip is murdered, Anita raises him long enough to obtain the truth, then joins Edward in an assault on Nikolaos's refuge. The confrontation destroys Zachary and much of Nikolaos's inner circle. Anita kills Nikolaos, ending the child vampire's rule of St. Louis. Jean-Claude survives and becomes the city's new master vampire. Anita also survives, but Jean-Claude has placed two mystical marks on her while saving and binding her during the case. She rejects the idea that this makes her his servant, leaving their relationship unresolved. The case establishes Anita as a person able to kill a master vampire as well as execute lesser vampires under legal authority, and it leaves her tied to the new master despite her determination to remain independent.
