Halt's Peril characters

By John Flanagan

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Will (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A full Ranger and Halt's former apprentice. Will begins the book tracking Tennyson alongside his mentor and Horace, using the patience and fieldcraft Halt taught him while carrying more responsibility than he once did as an apprentice.

Halt (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Will's former mentor and one of the Ranger Corps' most experienced members. Halt has just helped secure the throne of Clonmel for his nephew and refuses to let Tennyson escape to rebuild the Outsiders elsewhere.

Horace Altman (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

An Araluen knight and the Rangers' closest companion. Horace combines exceptional skill with a sword with the steadiness needed during a long pursuit in which the enemy prefers traps and hidden attacks to open combat.

Tennyson (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The fugitive leader of the Outsiders. His false claims to divine protection have been exposed in Clonmel, but he still has devoted followers, stolen wealth and professional killers with which to begin again.

Bacari (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 3

A Genovesan assassin in Tennyson's service. Bacari is trained to attack from concealment with a compact crossbow and to use poison so that even a minor wound can become fatal.

Marisi (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 3

A second Genovesan assassin travelling with Tennyson. Marisi shares Bacari's preference for ambush, poisoned bolts and escape routes prepared before an opponent knows an attack has begun.

The Outsiders (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

The remaining adherents of Tennyson's movement. Some continue to trust his spiritual claims even after the setback in Clonmel, while others follow the organisation because it still offers food, protection or a share of its wealth.

Malcolm (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 35

A healer based in Grimsdell Wood whose practical knowledge was once mistaken for sorcery. Malcolm is an old ally of Will and Halt and has experience treating injuries that ordinary battlefield medicine cannot resolve.

Tug (Minor)

Appears from the start

Will's small, shaggy Ranger horse and trusted working partner. Tug's endurance and responsiveness are vital during the sustained chase after Tennyson.

Abelard (Minor)

Appears from the start

Halt's Ranger horse, trained for long travel, quiet movement and the subtle commands used by the Corps. Abelard carries Halt through the pursuit that opens the book.

Kicker (Minor)

Appears from the start

Horace's battlehorse and travelling companion. Kicker is powerful enough for a fully equipped knight but disciplined around the lighter Ranger horses during the chase.
