Harry's best friend, who brings him to the Quidditch World Cup with his family. This year his loyalty is tested when he becomes convinced Harry entered the dangerous tournament for glory and lied about it, and the two fall out for weeks before the truth pulls them back together.

Harry and Ron's clever, principled friend, who keeps her head when the two boys quarrel and stands by Harry throughout the tournament. She throws herself into a campaign for the rights of house-elves and draws the notice, and later the malice, of a gossip journalist covering the contest.

The dark wizard, still weak and barely more than a shadow of himself, glimpsed plotting in a ruined house with a servant. He is patiently working toward a scheme to restore his body and full power, and Harry's scar burns with the sense of his growing strength.

The cowardly wizard who betrayed Harry's parents to Voldemort and framed Sirius Black, now serving as the weakened Voldemort's sole helper. Fearful and grovelling, he tends his master's frail form and carries out his cruelties, having nowhere left to go but back to the dark wizard's side.

A well-liked, honest older Hufflepuff student and an accomplished Quidditch player, whom Harry first meets travelling to the Quidditch World Cup. Modest and fair-minded, he is admired across the school and becomes one of its champions in the coming tournament.

A stiff, correct senior Ministry official who oversees international magical cooperation and helps organize the tournament. Once tipped as a future Minister for Magic, he is a stickler for rules whose rigid manner hides some private strain.

The new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, a legendary retired dark-wizard catcher famous for filling half of Azkaban. Battle-scarred, with a wooden leg and a magical, ceaselessly swivelling blue eye, he is gruff, paranoid, and endlessly watchful, and he teaches his students by confronting them directly with the darkest curses.

A famous international Quidditch star, chosen as champion for the visiting Durmstrang school. Surly and awkward off the pitch and much admired on it, he takes a quiet, genuine interest in Hermione.

The champion chosen for the visiting Beauxbatons Academy, a striking young woman, part magical veela, who is poised and proud and initially dismissive of Harry as too young to belong in the contest.

A gossip columnist for the wizarding newspaper, known for sensational, largely invented stories. She corners Harry for interviews and prints damaging, fabricated accounts of him and those close to him, feeding on the tournament's drama.

The Hogwarts headmaster, presiding over the tournament while quietly alert to signs that Voldemort's followers are stirring. He believes Harry did not enter the contest himself and watches over him, increasingly certain that darker events are moving beneath the surface of the year's festivities.
