Harry's godfather, cleared in no one's eyes but Harry's and still a wanted fugitive, who shelters the secret society in his gloomy ancestral home. Reckless and restless at being confined and useless, he is the closest thing to a parent Harry has, and chafes bitterly at being unable to protect him openly.

A young, cheerful Auror and member of the secret society guarding Harry, able to change her appearance at will. Clumsy but warm, she lightens the grim mood of the society's headquarters and helps escort Harry safely to it.

A Ministry official, sweet-voiced and fond of pink and kittens but coldly authoritarian, who appears first at Harry's disciplinary hearing and is then installed as the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. She refuses to teach any practical magic, punishes dissent with cruel detentions, and steadily seizes control of the school on the Ministry's behalf.

A dreamy, serenely odd student in Ginny's year, whom Harry meets on the train. She believes in many things others mock, wears strange homemade jewellery, and speaks her mind without embarrassment, but she is loyal, unafraid, and more perceptive than she first appears.

Ron's younger sister, no longer the shy girl of earlier years but confident, quick-tongued, and unafraid to stand up to her brothers or to Harry. She becomes a committed member of the students' secret defence group and a capable young witch in her own right.

Harry's clumsy, good-hearted classmate, who joins the secret defence group and works harder at it than anyone. He lives with his grandmother; his parents were tortured into madness by Voldemort's followers, a loss that gives his determination a quiet, private weight.

The Hogwarts headmaster, now openly opposed by a Ministry that fears he is raising an army, and stripped of his official positions for insisting Voldemort has returned. This year he avoids Harry's eyes and keeps him at a strange distance, for reasons Harry cannot understand and finds deeply hurtful.

The Potions master, tasked by Dumbledore with teaching Harry to close his mind against Voldemort's intrusions. The lessons go badly, poisoned by their mutual loathing.

A fanatically devoted follower of Voldemort and one of his most dangerous, who escapes Azkaban in a mass breakout. Cruel, unhinged, and proud of her loyalty, she is Sirius Black's cousin and was among those who tortured Neville Longbottom's parents into madness.
