Eve Levine (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A half-demon witch and the deceased mother of Savannah Levine. Eve exists as a ghost in the afterlife, able to watch the daughter she cannot directly raise. Restless, resourceful, and willing to break rules for Savannah, she has little interest in accepting anyone else's definition of redemption.
Kristof Nast (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A sorcerer, former Nast Cabal executive, and Savannah's deceased father. Kristof has reunited with Eve in the afterlife after dying during the failed effort to take custody of their daughter. He is steadier and more cautious than Eve, but no less concerned about Savannah.
Savannah Levine (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The powerful young witch who is Eve and Kristof's daughter. Savannah survived supernatural captivity and the deaths of both parents and now lives with Paige Winterbourne and Lucas Cortez. Eve continues to watch over her from the afterlife.
Paige Winterbourne (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Savannah's guardian and the daughter of Eve's former ally Ruth Winterbourne. Paige has left the American Coven and built an independent household where Savannah is treated as family rather than as an institutional asset.
Lucas Cortez (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Paige's partner, a sorcerer lawyer estranged from the Cortez Cabal. Lucas helps give Savannah the stable home her parents can no longer provide and takes supernatural threats to that home seriously.
The Fates (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The collective authority governing important parts of the afterlife. The Fates appear in shifting female forms and enforce rules that even powerful spirits cannot ignore. They offer Eve a task involving an escaped supernatural prisoner whose freedom embarrasses their realm.
Trsiel (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
An angel assigned to work with Eve. Trsiel is disciplined, experienced with the dangers of the afterlife, and committed to rules Eve regards as obstacles. He becomes her guide and field partner in the search for the escaped Nix.
The Nix (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 5
An ancient supernatural being that survives by entering living women and encouraging acts of violence and disorder. The Nix has escaped confinement in the afterlife and can hide behind its hosts, leaving Eve and Trsiel to track a pattern that spans many lives.
Balaam (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 20
Eve's powerful demon father. Balaam offers knowledge and access that can be difficult to obtain elsewhere in the afterlife, but his help comes with family expectations and motives Eve does not trust.
Jaime Vegas (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 28
A living necromancer whose public career as a television medium disguises her genuine ability to communicate with ghosts. Jaime gives Eve a rare route into the mortal world, especially when the search for the Nix moves dangerously close to Savannah.
