In short (whole book)

Jason secures Sophie's indenture before Lamprey can claim it, helps her become an Iron-rank adventurer, and forms a team with Sophie, Humphrey, Clive, Neil, and eventually Belinda. Their investigation reveals that altered expedition survivors carry starseeds serving the Builder, whose followers steal astral spaces with covert Church of Purity support. During Emir's contest in Fallen Echoes, Jason's allies survive monsters, hostile entrants, and the Order of the Reaper's trials. Jason uncovers the Order's continuing secret network, wins its genuine scythe, and gains new familiar powers. Sophie and Belinda complete their advancement, and the team moves into Jason's Cloudflask houseboat. Dorgan then locates a cult island. A strike force attacks, but the cult escapes through portals with Thadwick still captive. Rufus finds Farrah's killer and wounds it with Kingdom of Eclipse, then collapses exhausted and surrounded as the book ends.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Jason Asano arrived in this world as an outworlder and became an Iron-rank adventurer in Greenstone. Rufus Remore, Gary, and Farrah became his mentors and allies, while Humphrey Geller and Clive Standish joined his growing circle. Jason also became involved in protecting Sophie Wexler and Belinda from the people seeking to control them. The conflict led to unresolved hostility from Magic Society director Lucian Lamprey, Adventure Society director Elspeth Arella, and Cole Silva. An expedition into an astral space ended in disaster. Farrah was killed, many other adventurers died, and the surviving force returned with evidence of an organized enemy using unusual magic and constructs. Rufus and Gary want to identify those responsible, while Jason must decide how best to protect Sophie without replacing one form of coercion with another. He also remains separated from his family on Earth and seeks a possible path between worlds.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

So far this book: Jason offers Sophie and Belinda several ways out of Greenstone's criminal and political pressures. They choose a six-month indenture arrangement that can lead Sophie into the Adventure Society. Jason forces Arella to allow a fair hearing, and the Society claims Sophie's contract before Lamprey can take it. Sophie remains tracked and legally bound to Jason, but she and Belinda are housed safely in Emir's Cloud Palace. As the damaged expedition returns, Jason, Rufus, and Gary put their hunt for Farrah's killers on hold until the recovered evidence can be examined. With advice from Emir, Rufus, and Clive, Sophie adds Wind and Balance to her Swift Essence, creating the Mystic confluence. She reaches Iron rank with initial abilities that provide a ranged wind attack, meditative recovery, and protection against disruptive, dimensional, and astral effects. Jason makes clear that the powers are hers even after the contract ends, and Sophie begins to believe that his aim is lasting independence rather than ownership.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Sophie expands her movement and protective abilities, then starts practical monster training. Meanwhile, five expedition survivors show mismatched auras, changed personalities, and resistance to examination. They disappear before officials can secure them, and Anisa is revealed to the reader as a Purity priestess secretly coordinating with the hidden operation. Cassandra identifies her brother Thadwick as one of the five and briefly begins a relationship with Jason. The official inquiry demotes Jason to one Adventure Society star, after which Cassandra ends the relationship under Mercer family pressure. Jason refuses an offer from the Goddess of Knowledge to trade his faith for Farrah's killers, despite the temptation. Clive finds evidence that similar astral incidents have occurred elsewhere, while Rufus begins tracing specialized supplies through Greenstone and Hornus. Sophie and Jason acknowledge that their earlier approach to training had become controlling and restart as partners. The altered survivors are recovered in Hornus, leaving Greenstone with a chance to determine what has happened to them.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Sophie kills her first monsters alone and commits to an adventurer's path. Clive and Belinda upgrade a Geller mirage chamber to reconstruct the expedition evidence, while Rufus recruits Dorgan to investigate smuggling. A Purity cleansing ritual exposes a metal-wire construct threaded through an altered survivor, but destroying it kills the host. A second examination identifies the implant as a starseed, a transcendent device that replaces its host and can become impossible to remove. The remaining four seeded survivors escape custody. Clive's simulation shows that the expedition enemy was trying to sever an astral space from the world, and he identifies the Builder as the great astral being behind the operation. Its followers steal astral spaces to assemble a world in the deep astral, making the Greenstone incident part of a much wider threat. The group agrees to verify and distribute the discovery through trusted institutions while searching for the escaped hosts.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Emir reveals a nearby astral space accessible only to Iron-rank adventurers and urges Jason to build a balanced team for the coming contest. Jason recruits Neil Davone, an elven healer whose willingness to challenge his former church matters as much as his support powers. Humphrey becomes the team's central attacker, backed by Neil's shields and recovery, Clive's prepared magic, Sophie's interception, and Jason's disruptive afflictions. Gary and the Magic Society trace enemy constructs to imported clockwork cores associated with the Builder's created world. The group also accepts that Farrah cannot simply be restored after death. Sophie gains a powerful reflex ability. In a three-team mirage exercise, Jason's group manipulates Beth Cavendish's and Rick Geller's teams into fighting before ambushing both sides. The victory demonstrates strong planning and coordination, but the group still needs experience and further advancement before Emir's undisclosed challenge. Outside the team, Dorgan continues following the Builder operation's supply trail.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

Emir announces that hundreds of Iron-rank entrants will compete for the legacy of the extinct Order of the Reaper. Before the contest, he and Jason stage a public break so Jason can serve as bait for the Builder cult. A Silver-rank cultist and three Bronze-rankers attack Jason and Sophie, but all four self-destruct before capture. Jason nevertheless obtains an intact starseed. He also recognizes that Landemere Vane, whom he previously killed, was a Builder cultist. Jason, Rufus, Clive, Emir, and Danielle begin to suspect that the Church of Purity helped the cult around the Vane estate. Anisa then uses Lamprey's authority to seize the intact starseed from the Magic Society for supposed destruction. Jason allows it, preserving the group's concealed advantage and giving them a possible way to watch the church. The Purity connection remains unproven, while Dorgan's shipping inquiry and Rufus's trusted investigation continue. The contest is now both a prize expedition and a possible front in the Builder conflict.

Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)

The competitors descend beneath Skyscar Lake and enter the City of Fallen Echoes, where the gate scatters Jason's team across separate towers. Jason and Sophie travel together through a city dense with monsters and magical rewards. The trial administrator explains that the ruined astral space belonged to the Order of the Reaper. The Churches of Purity and the Unliving destroyed the Order's presence there and released Vorgia, which transformed trapped initiates into adaptive flesh abominations. Entrants must pass trials of wisdom, capability, courage, intellect, and resolve before reaching the legacy. Jason and Sophie choose the wisdom reward, receiving escape medallions and rare emergency potions rather than immediately taking the dangerous courage test. They begin searching for the rest of their team while keeping those emergency resources in reserve.

Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)

Jason and Sophie find murdered entrants and then reconnect with Neil, Jory, and Imran Keen during an attack involving Vorgia. Their temporary group destroys a newly transformed flesh abomination by forcing it to adapt between speed and durability while Jason's necrotic afflictions accumulate. Elsewhere, Clive joins Valdis and wins a paired set of legendary magical weapons, while Humphrey remains committed to rejoining his own friends. Dorgan uncovers secret shipping, huge bribes, and vanished investigators, and Rufus privately identifies the Church of Purity as the leading suspect. At the city center, Beth Cavendish organizes survivors against an enormous blood-root vine blocking access to the final tower. Jory identifies its vulnerable root network, and the assembled force digs toward it. Jason sends Colin into the roots and applies escalating afflictions, causing the vine to rot across the central district. Its tentacles and spawned creatures begin falling inert, allowing the route toward the center to reopen, although the vine's final state is not yet confirmed.

Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)

Survivors regroup around Fallen Echoes' central tower. Jason's whole team is alive, while Jory remains with them after his companions evacuate. The Reaper rewards include unique awakening stones, and Jason and Humphrey accept the lethal courage trial. Humphrey rejects a vision of failing to protect his family. Jason confronts a tyrannical possible version of himself and refuses that path. He solves the intellect trial and then refuses an order to execute ancient prisoners, discovering that independent judgment is the real test of resolve. In Greenstone, Thalia proves the returned Thadwick is a projected double, destroys two compromised guards, and learns that the cult has abducted her son again while preparing an astral attack on Greenstone and the Delta. Jason then deduces that the Order's extinction is a cover for a continuing covert network. He passes its hidden trial, receives the genuine Scythe of the Reaper and a token, and exits with his team. Their shared quest reward evolves all five members' racial gifts.

Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)

Back with Emir, the team tests its evolved gifts and limits knowledge of Jason's role in triggering them. Jason receives the contest's awakening stones and bonds the Cloud Palace growth reward. Combining a Reaper token with an awakening stone gives him a Shadow of the Reaper familiar ability, while further stones complete his dark and doom sets with a shadow arm and another familiar. Neil and Humphrey also complete important parts of their power sets. Several gods publicly thank Jason for freeing the people trapped in Fallen Echoes. Their concentrated attention injures and refines his aura, granting the title Godless Prophet and leaving a detectable transcendent trace. Sophie completes a flexible set focused on movement, brief invulnerability, redirection, and fighting more effectively under pressure. Belinda begins taking her own essences, gaining storage, conjured tools, teleportation, and curse abilities. Clive also reveals that Lamprey has effectively removed him from ordinary Magic Society work because of his association with Jason.

Story so far - through chapter 74 (this book)

Belinda absorbs the Charlatan confluence and reaches Iron rank, gaining shapeshifting and aura-masking abilities. At the same time, Cole begins arranging for a Silver-rank adventurer to abduct Jason, with Sophie as another target. Hester takes the team to Jayapura to sell its trial loot and buy rare materials. Jason receives an Immortal Crest, while the group studies professional arena teams and recognizes major gaps in its experience. Hester also warns that another Reaper finalist and every companion who travelled with that person have vanished without possessions or trace. Jason summons Shade, the former trial administrator, as a familiar, adds the combat familiar Gordon beside Colin, and helps Belinda summon Shimmer and Gemini. Returning to Greenstone, Jason bonds Emir's final reward, a soulbound Cloudflask, and configures it as a three-story houseboat. Sophie, Belinda, Clive, Humphrey, and Neil move in with him so the six-person team can train as a single unit.

Story so far - through chapter 76 (this book)

Jason's team begins intensive training in the Cloudflask houseboat, integrating new familiars and abilities while planning Mirage Arena contests to test its coordination. Valdis remains in Greenstone to train with Rufus. Dorgan's shipping inquiry identifies a cult island after Mercer pressure forces the enemy to move supplies. A mixed-rank strike force attacks and confirms Church of Purity priests, Builder cultists, constructs, portal devices, and a Gold-rank priest. Arella leads the assault on constructs while Constance leads the lower-rank sweep. Unexpected Silver-rank cultists force Constance's element to retreat, and Rufus intervenes. He recognizes a powerful abomination as Farrah's killer and refuses to withdraw. Rufus builds a large field of sun and moon effects and unleashes Kingdom of Eclipse, killing many enemies and grievously wounding the killer. The abomination survives. Rufus collapses exhausted and surrounded as it approaches him. The cult is escaping through its portal network with Thadwick still alive in its custody, and Rufus's immediate fate remains unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Jason's six-person team settles into his soulbound Cloudflask houseboat and begins intensive training with its completed abilities and new familiars. Sophie and Belinda have both reached Iron rank, although Sophie's indenture and the threats from Lamprey and Cole remain unresolved. Jason holds the genuine Scythe of the Reaper and a Reaper token, but has not committed to the covert Order and still does not know how to use the World Phoenix token to reach Earth. The Builder crisis overtakes these gains. Dorgan's shipping evidence leads a mixed-rank strike force to a cult island, confirming Church of Purity involvement, constructs, and an extensive portal network. The cult withdraws while keeping Thadwick alive. Rufus recognizes Farrah's killer, exhausts himself using Kingdom of Eclipse against it, and collapses surrounded by enemies. The killer survives badly wounded, and Rufus's immediate fate is unresolved when chapter 76 ends.
