Peter grows jealous of the attention Heidi gives Clara and pushes Clara's empty wheelchair down the mountain, where it breaks apart. Without it, Clara is encouraged to stand and then discovers that she can take steps with support. Practice turns those first efforts into independent walking. When Mr. Sesemann and Clara's grandmother arrive, Clara surprises them by crossing the meadow on foot. Peter eventually confesses what he did and is forgiven. Mr. Sesemann, Doctor Classen, and Grandfather make arrangements ensuring Heidi will be cared for in the future. Clara's father and grandmother reach the alp after hearing that Clara has learned to walk.
