Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Celaena Sardothien (Protagonist)
Also known as Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, Elentiya
Appears from the start
Sent across the sea by the King of Adarlan to murder the royal family of Wendlyn, she has done nothing of the kind. She spends her days drunk in the port city of Varese, avoiding the palace, avoiding the woods where magic still works, and avoiding the name she admitted to herself at the end of her last winter: Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, heir to the throne of Terrasen. She came to find out how the king of Adarlan crushed magic and how to undo it, and instead she has stalled, sick with grief for a murdered friend and terrified of the power she has never let herself use.
Rowan Whitethorn (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
A Fae warrior of Doranelle, silver-haired, tattooed down one side of his face and neck, several centuries old and blood-sworn to Queen Maeve. He has magic of wind and ice and can take the form of a white-tailed hawk. Sent to collect Celaena, he treats her with open contempt and is assigned to make something useful of her whether she cooperates or not. He gives away nothing about himself.
Maeve
First appears in chapter 4
Queen of the Fae, who rules from the city of Doranelle across the mountains from Wendlyn. She is Celaena's great-aunt through her mother's line, ancient, beautiful, and entirely unreadable. She offers a bargain: master the fire magic she has inherited, and Maeve will tell her what the king of Adarlan is actually doing and how magic might be freed. She keeps a cadre of immensely powerful warriors bound to her by blood oath.
Manon Blackbeak (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 2
Heir to the Blackbeak clan of the Ironteeth witches, granddaughter of its Matron, and leader of the coven called the Thirteen. She has iron teeth and iron nails she can retract, white hair, and no interest at all in the affairs of mortals. Summoned with the other Ironteeth clans to a mountain stronghold in Adarlan's north, she is told the witches will finally be given what they have wanted for five centuries, and that they must first prove they can master the beasts being bred there.
Asterin Blackbeak (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
Manon's Second in the Thirteen and her cousin, the finest rider among them and the one witch who will argue with Manon to her face. She is louder, warmer, and more openly loyal than the Ironteeth are supposed to be.
Sorrel (Minor)
First appears in chapter 6
Manon's Third, broad and silent, whose duty is to guard the heir's body before anything else, including Manon's own wishes.
The Blackbeak Matron (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 4
Matron of the Blackbeak clan and Manon's grandmother, ancient and pitiless, who has spent five hundred years waiting for the Ironteeth to reclaim their kingdom in the west. She raised Manon to be a weapon and corrects her with a hand or a claw when she judges her insufficiently ruthless.
Abraxos (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 14
The runt of the wyvern pens, scarred, undersized, and kept alive only as a training target for the others. He has an unusual patience and a stubbornness the handlers cannot beat out of him, and Manon picks him over the magnificent bull she was expected to claim.
Chaol Westfall (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
Captain of the Royal Guard of Adarlan, still at his post in Rifthold and no longer able to pretend he serves a king he can respect. He is trying to find a way to free Dorian, to undo what was done to magic, and to survive the consequences of having sent Celaena overseas. He has begun working with the small Terrasen resistance in the city, which trusts him no more than he trusts it.
Dorian Havilliard (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 5
Crown Prince of Adarlan, who now knows he carries raw, unschooled magic in a kingdom where possessing it is a capital crime. He has withdrawn from Chaol to keep him safe, plays the idle prince for his father's court, and spends his nights trying to work out what he is and how long he can hide it.
Sorscha (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 8
A young healer in the castle infirmary, quiet and observant, who came to Rifthold from Fenharrow after Adarlan's armies destroyed her family. She has treated Dorian discreetly for years and has noticed more about him than she has ever said aloud.
Aedion Ashryver (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 9
General of the Bane, Terrasen's legendary legion, now serving in Adarlan's army and famous across the empire as the Wolf of the North. He is the king's celebrated young war hero, arrogant, hard-drinking, and openly insolent at court. He is also Aelin Galathynius's cousin, and Chaol cannot decide whether he is a traitor to his own kingdom or something more complicated.
Nesryn Faliq (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 16
A city guard in Rifthold, a baker's daughter of southern descent, and one of the best archers in the capital. She is blunt, practical, and involved with the rebel network far more deeply than her uniform suggests.
Emrys (Minor)
First appears in chapter 8
A half-Fae cook at the mountain fortress of Mistward, elderly, sharp-tongued, and a keeper of the old stories. He puts the newcomer to work scouring pots and gives ground on nothing.
Luca (Minor)
First appears in chapter 8
A half-Fae youth at Mistward, cheerful and talkative, eager to be a warrior and entirely unimpressed by the sullen mortal woman scrubbing dishes beside him.
Ren Allsbrook (Minor)
First appears in chapter 12
A Terrasen lord in his twenties, scarred and hunted, who has spent a decade running from Adarlan and now works with the resistance in Rifthold. He wants the lost heir found and is losing patience with everyone who claims to be helping.
Narrok (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 50
One of the king of Adarlan's commanders, sent across the sea into Wendlyn with a force of soldiers who do not behave like soldiers. Something is deeply wrong with him and with the men he leads, and the Fae who go out to face them do not come back the same.
