In short (whole book)

Reunited with the survivors scattered at the end of book one, Nathaniel Gwyn fights up through two more floors of the lethal 'tutorial.' On the decaying third floor he battles undead horrors, uncovers that the city's healing field is sustained by the artificially preserved body of a long-dead Saint, and helps bring down the millennia-old king and warriors guarding her; the healer Lily destroys the Saint's body to clear the floor. A mind-imprint of the ancient being Lissandra briefly returns to train him before he destroys it, and he unlocks a difficulty even beyond Hell. On the fourth floor, ruled by the cat-like Lynthari, the group builds a comfortable city base, Nathaniel reconciles fully with Sophie, and his power swells enormously. Coerced by a guildmaster named Elydor into a deadly expedition to loot a dead champion's manor, the group is trapped inside a calamity-tier tree's city-spanning barrier for weeks while the other guilds are killed off; Nathaniel secretly shields his own people the entire time, then kills Elydor and his elites once it is safe. The group escapes with a fortune in loot and no losses, leaving the tree undefeated and a mysterious, unopenable black chest as the one thread carried into book three.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

In the first Hell Difficulty Tutorial, an ordinary young man named Nathaniel Gwyn is pulled from a commuter bus, along with a crowd of strangers, into a lethal fantasy 'tutorial' governed by a game-like system of levels, skills and status windows, and set to the deadliest difficulty, 'Hell.' Detached and calculating, he survives the first floor's monster-choked trials by building himself into a fragile but devastating mana specialist, losing an arm and killing the apex predator that hunted them as his friend Kevin dies. On the war-torn second floor the survivors are scattered and treated as low-status outsiders; Nathaniel kills a noble who threatens him and is taken in by an ancient, near-omnipotent woman known as the Master and her attendant Ruby, who becomes a genuine friend. As that floor ends, the Master reveals herself as Lissandra, an 'absolute' who believes she is an artificial creation of the system, kills Ruby and destroys a city, then sacrifices her own body to erase the second floor's world so Nathaniel can witness it. He escapes alone to the third floor and reunites with Isabella, the young sister of Sophie, the woman who once secretly tampered with his mind. The rest of the group survives but is broken into scattered clusters, and the healer Lily lies unconscious, having given up her own arm to restore his.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

On the third floor, a vast, decaying, monster-filled city, Nathaniel and Isabella begin alone at level 75, hunting diseased giant rats and far deadlier named monsters while searching for the rest of the group. Water and food, not combat, prove to be the floor's real threat. Reaching out over the survivors' message board, Nathaniel is reassured by Tess that his core memories are intact, but grows increasingly suspicious that Sophie's earlier tampering erased more than he realized. He and Isabella rescue a trio of weaker survivors who transferred up from the easier 'Hard' difficulty, chiefly the calculating, water-creating Cipher, on strictly transactional terms. They also find a family of the floor's frightened natives, who explain the setting: generations ago a corrupting force called 'decay' turned monsters and people alike into undead-like horrors and collapsed the food supply, and the surviving city grew up inside a protective field created by a figure called the Saint, a field that is slowly failing. Nathaniel, meanwhile, keeps remaking his own body and mana, and begins deliberately loosening his rigid emotional control when Isabella is nearly killed in front of him.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Drawing on what he saw of Lissandra at the second floor's end, Nathaniel builds new internal mana constructs, including one fused to his own heart that turns each heartbeat into raw force, nearly killing himself before he stabilizes it. Hunting alone, he is cut off from the group and relentlessly pursued by two powerful undead 'mage hunter' monsters whose attacks cancel a mana-user's skills, exactly the sort of enemy his fragile, mana-heavy build fears most. Badly wounded, he finally kills both and collapses outside a shelter, only to wake to Sophie healing him and reflexively break her nose. The reunions cascade from there: Sophie, Tess and Aaron are already together, and soon Lily and Kim rejoin as well. Lily, still missing the arm she sacrificed for him, heals him at cost to herself, and the two reconcile. Nathaniel studies her technique to build a healing skill of his own, thanks Kim for having protected her, and confronts Sophie about his memories, which she does not deny. By now most of the scattered survivors are back together, with only Hadwin, Maya and Dennis still unaccounted for.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

As the group travels deeper toward the city's center, Nathaniel keeps training and killing ever-stronger monsters. Lily reveals her own brutal close-combat style, a grey-mana strike that eats away flesh and shuts down enemies' self-healing, and pushes herself hard despite her injuries. Nathaniel reaches level 100, unlocking a gradual body upgrade that reduces his need for food, water and sleep, and hunts and kills alone a house-sized undead deer far above his level with a single overcharged, self-made explosive attack. He and Tess, it emerges, are both quietly chasing something the rest of the group is not: a token that would let them step into a difficulty even harder than Hell, and Nathaniel combines two of his tokens as a step toward it. Leaving the native survivors behind, and at Lily's insistence handing them the group's precious sparrow trap, the survivors press on and finally come within sight of the floor's great wall: an immense, smooth, seamless white structure threaded with visible mana, towering over the entire city.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

The uneasy alliance with the transferred survivors ends in blood: Goldie uses a hidden hypnotic ability on Nathaniel, and while his emotional control is stripped away he kills both her and Cipher, having learned they were scheming to seize Lily as a captive healer. Regaining himself, he reconciles with Lily, and near the wall the whole group finally reunites when Hadwin, Maya and Dennis rejoin. The group scales the great white wall and, on the far side, battles a set of enormous undead beasts kept there long ago as a ruler's 'pets': they kill a second house-sized undead deer, and Nathaniel alone grinds down a monstrous undead bear that unnervingly mimics his own heart-construct. Along the way an old, itching mark on his restored left palm resolves into a hidden circuit shaped exactly like the Peacemaker, the powerful defensive item Lissandra gave him. Unsettled, he deliberately severs his own left hand to investigate it.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

The severed hand regrows into something new: a small, breathing, flesh-and-bone form that speaks and calls itself Lissandra, an imprint of the ancient being's mind left inside the Peacemaker. Unable to take him over, it strikes a bargain to correct his mana technique in exchange for one day carrying a message to her original self's home world. Under its harsh coaching Nathaniel undergoes brutal 'active tempering,' pounding his own body with force to make it stronger at agonizing cost, and merges two of his skills into one, which finally fulfils the last condition for the token he and Tess have been chasing. He steps into 'Beyond,' a difficulty above Hell entered only briefly once every few months: a one-hour survival trial against swarms of Cinderbears and poisoned, invisible goblins that pushes him to his limit. He clears it, and a vast presence briefly overrides the system to single him out with a cryptic warning never to let a skill reach its ninety-ninth level.

Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)

Nathaniel spends a hard-won reward to permanently double his mana pool, then struggles with the enormous imbalance it creates, building a fourth construct that renders his own mana untouchable by outside interference. Between training the whole group and drawing closer to them, he keeps the Lissandra imprint's counsel but never lets it near his body work. When it is finally time to move on, he memorizes the coordinates to her original's world, destroys the record, and, after the imprint spends the last of its power in a final overwhelming display, burns it to nothing. A system-wide announcement declares an 'irreversible narrative progression' has begun and shuts off the survivors' message board. The group crosses a second, blue wall into a pristine, eerily lifeless inner city where nothing decays, and is met by an extraordinarily powerful, unstable swordsman who calls himself a warrior of the last king, protector of what he names the last bastion of humanity, his level far beyond anything the group can read.

Story so far - through chapter 73 (this book)

The warrior hosts the group under a courteous but explicit death threat, confining them to a deserted mansion until an audience with his king. The inner city, its king and its three warriors turn out to be thousands of years old, frozen and undying inside the Saint's preservation field. At the audience the king bluntly announces he will kill them all, sparing only Lily as a healer, and confirms Nathaniel's guess: the Saint is long dead, her body kept artificially 'alive' to sustain the field, and the 'decay' bleeds from her death. Nathaniel springs a hidden weapon, instantly killing two of the three warriors; in the battle that follows, the near-invulnerable king regenerates from any wound until Nathaniel forms a strange black mana blade, severs the king's link to the Saint, and kills him. The group loots powerful items from the dead. Then a piece of Lissandra, secretly planted inside Hadwin's arm, regrows into a second, mana-less but physically overwhelming incarnation of her.

Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)

The reborn Lissandra effortlessly overpowers the group, wounding several and costing Lily an arm again, but the real Lily, sacrificing most of her own limbs, lands a decisive blow that finally destroys the Saint's body and clears the third floor. Portals open to the fourth floor for the tutorial's survivors but not for Lissandra, who is left behind. On the new floor the group finds a shop, a currency of 'shards,' and a subclass system; Nathaniel chooses his subclass and refuses to spend his tokens on shortcuts, preferring to earn mastery himself. Camped in a cold mountain range, the survivors puzzle over a field of artificial-looking debris orbiting the planet and bottomless holes bored into the mountains, before discovering that the mountains themselves are a vast colony of giant ants. The group narrowly escapes a huge swarm and reaches open plains, with the fourth floor's main quest set before them: destroy one of its four 'calamities.'

Story so far - through chapter 85 (this book)

While the rest of the group settles into a distant, inhabited city, Nathaniel returns alone to the ant mountains to grind levels and decompress. The colony fights back like a coordinated army, throwing wave after wave of specialized ant variants, joint barriers and counter-tactics at him, and he adapts each time, favouring concentrated fire, the one thing the ants resist worst. Wanting only a few more levels before a class upgrade, he drops a compressed mana-and-heat bomb down one of the bottomless tunnels and flees; it sets off an enormous underground chain reaction that kills ants for hours and rockets him from level 146 to 159 in a single stroke, far past what he intended. Shaken, he swears off the mountain range for weeks. Meanwhile, in the nine days apart from him, the group has bought a fine city house with the proceeds of their third-floor loot and built a working base, intelligence network and hunting routine of their own.

Story so far - through chapter 93 (this book)

Reaching the city, Nathaniel learns its 'surprise': it is ruled by the Lynthari, a long-lived, far higher-levelled race of cat-featured people who treat humans roughly the way humans treat cats, and who find his composure and mismatched eyes fascinating. He takes a level-150 class upgrade, and his stored 'reservoir' of surplus mana keeps swelling toward triple his main pool. The central conflict of the previous book finally resolves when Sophie, in a raw exchange, asks him for a genuine clean slate rather than payment, and he agrees; the two begin a scheme to repeatedly sell Lissandra's world coordinates to the system shop for a fortune in shards. The group registers a small guild and maps the city, learning that four 'calamities' loom over the floor: a giant ant colony, a dead champion's corpse puppeted by an ancient armor, an immense sickly tree in the ruined old capital, and a fourth of which nothing is known. Life, for once, is comfortable, and Nathaniel quietly admits he wants more of it.

Story so far - through chapter 103 (this book)

That comfort ends when Elydor, guildmaster of one of the city's major guilds, forces his way into the group's home, humiliates them, and coerces them into a dangerous expedition as expendable support, alongside a second major guild led by the more cautious Obelia and a smaller guild used as fodder. The target is a dead champion's manor in the ruined old capital, held by a calamity-tier giant, sickly tree of terrifying power. The raid succeeds, and the group hauls out treasure including a heavy, lockless black chest, but as the expedition retreats the tree throws up a barrier sealing the entire city, trapping everyone inside. For roughly three weeks the tree kills off the guilds one by one with a silent, near-undetectable attack that slowly turns victims into plant matter; the smaller guild is wiped out entirely and several of Elydor's people die. The group survives intact only because Nathaniel secretly and continuously shields them the whole time, at real physical cost and by suppressing his own emotions to endure it. Once he has learned everything he can from the two guilds' failed attempts to break the barrier, he drops that suppression and turns on Elydor.

Story so far - through chapter 106 (this book)

In a single lopsided battle, Nathaniel and the group kill Elydor and his elite fighters, holding back only enough to keep their own people safe; Sophie uses her mind control lethally for the first time, Lily kills with her disintegration touch, and Biscuit, now manifesting solid mana tentacles, finishes Elydor off. Obelia keeps her own guild out of the fight and stands down when Nathaniel challenges her, parting on wary but respectful, transactional terms and warning that Elydor's death will bring political fallout. Nathaniel then crafts an item that finally cracks the tree's barrier, and the survivors escape by emergency teleport, landing near the ant mountains, where ants are unsettlingly seen moving outside their territory for the first time. Back at their city base, the group divides an enormous haul, including five powerful items most of which Nathaniel claims or shares out. Every member of the group and Biscuit is alive and unharmed; Elydor's guild and the smaller one are destroyed, while Obelia's guild and the Lynthari remain standing and cautiously friendly. Two of the floor's calamities are still untouched and the sickly tree survives, its barrier visibly expanding. The book closes on one unresolved mystery, a black chest from the manor that resists every skill anyone in the group has, including Lily's disintegration, which Nathaniel vows to open however long it takes, and on a quiet moment as Biscuit returns his signature nose-boop for the first time.

How does it end? (ending)

Book two ends with the group victorious, intact, and settled at their fourth-floor city base. Forced into an expedition to loot a dead champion's manor by the guildmaster Elydor, the group and the two guilds accompanying them were sealed inside the ruined old capital by a calamity-tier tree, which slowly killed the others off over roughly three weeks; Nathaniel outlasted it by secretly shielding his own people the whole time. Once he had learned all he could, he killed Elydor and his elite fighters in a single decisive battle, while the second guild's leader, Obelia, stood down and parted as a wary, respectful ally, warning of political fallout to come. Nathaniel broke the tree's barrier with an item of his own making, and the survivors escaped, landing near the ant mountains where ants were disturbingly seen roaming outside their territory. Every member of the group and Biscuit is alive; Elydor's guild and a smaller one are destroyed, while Obelia's guild and the ruling Lynthari remain standing and cautiously friendly. Left open for book three: the sickly tree survives with its barrier expanding; two of the floor's four calamities are untouched and a fourth remains wholly unknown; the ants' unnatural movement; Elydor's promised political fallout; the unfinished scheme to sell Lissandra's coordinates; Lily's unresolved feelings for Nathaniel; and the book's final image, a heavy black chest from the manor that resists every skill the group possesses, including Lily's disintegration, which Nathaniel is determined to open eventually.
