In short (whole book)

Established as the strongest presence in the fourth floor's city, Nathaniel Gwyn trades a public promise to kill the 'Living Tree' calamity for guild peace, learns the ruling Lynthari are ancient invaders, and watches their matriarch spend her life destroying the tree. When the ant Colony assaults the city, his ally Hadwin is killed and Nathaniel loses a hand; he then hunts the Colony's leader off-world and annihilates the hive by dropping an ancient orbital structure onto it, clearing the floor. His group settles old scores, killing two rival guildmasters and a third calamity, before the fifth floor separates every survivor onto their own instance with a single task: raise a disciple. Assigned a starved six-year-old half-demon girl on a ruined, monster-ridden world, Nathaniel bonds with and trains her, fights a monstrous 'Veil Guardian' to a bloody standstill, and exposes and ends a native bunker's hidden cannibalism. The book closes as he and his disciple, now freshly classed, reach a colossal fallen sky-fortress with a mana-dense valley beyond, both unexplored.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

In the first two books, an ordinary young man, Nathaniel Gwyn, is pulled with a crowd of strangers into a lethal fantasy 'tutorial' run like a game of levels, skills and status windows, and locked to its deadliest setting, 'Hell.' Detached and calculating, he survives the monster-choked first floor by building himself into a fragile but devastating mana specialist, losing an arm and watching a friend die. On the war-torn second stretch he is taken in by an ancient, near-omnipotent woman who trains him, then reveals herself as an artificial 'absolute,' destroys her own world to let him witness the truth, and dies. Reunited afterward with the scattered survivors, among them the young girl Isabella and her mind-bending sister Sophie, who had once secretly tampered with his memory, Nathaniel fights on: he helps end the millennia-old guardians of a decaying city, unlocks a trial difficulty beyond Hell, and reaches a fourth floor ruled by the cat-like Lynthari, where his group builds a comfortable city base and his power swells enormously. Coerced by a guildmaster into a deadly expedition, the group is trapped for weeks inside a calamity-tier tree's barrier while rival guilds are wiped out; Nathaniel secretly shields his own people the whole time, then kills the guildmaster once it is safe. The group escapes rich and intact, leaving that tree undefeated and an unopenable black chest as the mystery carried forward.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Now one of the strongest presences in the fourth floor's city of Virelia, Nathaniel turns his reputation into leverage, publicly promising to personally kill the immense, sickly 'Living Tree' calamity in exchange for months of political peace among the city's guilds. He tests his closest Lynthari ally in a real fight, meets the city's rival guildmasters, and openly admits to having killed the guildmaster who trapped his group on the previous floor. A childhood flashback reveals that his sister, Victoria, not he, had killed their abusive father. The group's members finalize their new 'subclasses,' Isabella choosing one built on kindness and Sophie one built on greed, and Nathaniel and Sophie perfect their scheme to sell a stranded ancient ally's world coordinates through the system shop for a fortune. Lily discloses a long-hidden truth about a friend's death on the first floor, lifting guilt Nathaniel had carried for years. A new cross-difficulty community tournament is announced, and the group's fortunes, for once, look secure.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Chasing power beyond the ordinary, Nathaniel enters the second trial of 'Beyond,' a difficulty harsher than Hell: a week of survival with no mana regeneration against a sense-corrupting force. He clears it alone, and during it a mysterious disembodied voice contacts him for the first time, remarking on his subclass and referencing a censored figure it calls 'the ruler of greed.' He emerges with two of his skills fused into more powerful forms. The group learns it can pledge its rare loot as collateral for effectively unlimited Lynthari loans, turning its wealth into a weapon of its own. A mysterious beast egg hatches into Noodle, a small snake of unknown ancient bloodline that attaches itself to Isabella. Tess, too, forges a combined skill and clears Beyond's first trial. As the promised calamity hunt nears, the ancient and immensely powerful matriarch of the ruling Lynthari appears before the group in person for the first time, her knowledge of the planet's past hinting that the floor's calamities are older and stranger than anyone assumed.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

An expedition into an ancient mine goes wrong when the group is sealed inside a buried vault. There they fight and destroy a guardian construct, an 'Arcane Archer' imprinted with the personality of a long-dead champion's disciple, in a hard, drawn-out battle. As the construct falls, the mysterious voice speaks to Nathaniel a third time, and the recovered core of the guardian still holds a fragment of personality that resists every attempt to read it. The detour surfaces a troubling theory circulating among the city's guilds: that the Lynthari are not the planet's natives at all but ancient invaders, and that the floor's calamities, the Living Tree, the ant Colony, and a dormant armored champion, are relics left over from a forgotten war. Nathaniel files the idea away, increasingly certain that the truth of this world runs far deeper than the guild politics playing out on its surface.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

The vault's ancient array points toward the origin of the ant Colony that looms over the floor, deepening Nathaniel's suspicion of a hidden history beneath the city. Amid the preparations, the group works the city's markets and a major auction, converting loot into wealth and gear ahead of the promised calamity hunt. But the plan to hunt the Living Tree on the group's own terms is overtaken by events: as they ready themselves, the immense calamity abruptly vanishes from its place in the ruined old capital, an impossible disappearance that throws the city's guilds into alarm and turns the whole situation from a planned expedition into a sudden, unpredictable crisis. Nathaniel, who had staked his political standing on personally killing the tree, is left to reckon with a threat that has slipped its leash.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

The vanished Living Tree resurfaces as a direct danger, and the truth of the planet comes out with it. The Lynthari matriarch, revealed to be the same eccentric socialite who had earlier tried to buy the group's corgi, confirms the invasion theory: her people are not native to this world, and every Lynthari who knew the secret was killed to keep it. Rather than let the calamity run loose, she destroys the Living Tree herself, spending her own life to do it, and deliberately weakens a kin-controlling power beforehand so no enemy can seize it after her death. One of the city's guildmasters is exposed as a traitor implicated in an earlier killing among the Lynthari. In the aftermath Nathaniel's closest Lynthari ally is left as the people's de facto successor, and the matriarch's quiet farewell message reaches Nathaniel alone, closing a chapter of the floor's politics even as a greater threat, the ant Colony, begins to stir.

Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)

The ant Colony erupts into open war on the city. Over a punishing campaign the group fights waves of specialized ant variants; Nathaniel gains a second personal 'trait,' the group deepens its dealings with the city's Craft Guild, and Kim Min-Jae receives a mysterious transplanted 'eye' that sharpens his gravity powers. The Colony reanimates the Living Tree's corpse and hurls it at the city, and Nathaniel and Tess destroy the reanimated husk. Then the Colony's leader, 'the first one,' leads a direct assault on the city itself. In the desperate defense Hadwin is killed shielding Sophie and the twins from the creature, the book's single great loss and the emotional turning point for the group's second half. Nathaniel loses a hand in the same fight while isolating and gravely wounding the Colony's leader, driving it into retreat. Drained to nothing, he resolves to finish the creature no matter where it flees.

Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)

Without goodbyes, Nathaniel slips away from the grieving group to hunt the Colony's wounded leader to its source, taking only his closest Lynthari ally with him; the rest of the survivors, steadied by Tess, begin rebuilding and training on their own. The chase leads off the planet's surface to an ancient orbital structure built by the Lynthari's own long-vanished 'absolute,' a derelict now falling toward the city. Repairing an ancient array to reach it, Nathaniel and his ally corner 'the first one' and kill it by redirecting the plummeting structure straight into the Colony's remaining forces, wiping out the hive in a single catastrophic stroke. With the ant calamity destroyed, the fourth floor's main quest completes and the portal to the fifth floor opens, though two of the floor's calamities still stand and the group is not yet whole again.

Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)

In the fourth floor's final stretch the group settles its outstanding scores. The ancient orbital base's origins are pieced together; two rival guildmasters are killed, Isola by Nathaniel's Lynthari ally, and Obelia in a revenge raid led by Lily and Tess after she was sent to seize Lily. Lily's subclass is confirmed as one built on wrath. Without Nathaniel, the group hunts and destroys the floor's armored 'Fallen Hero' calamity entirely on its own, Tess driving a lightning spear through its heart. Nathaniel and his closest Lynthari ally share a final farewell duel before he steps alone through the portal to the fifth floor. Behind him, the ancient ally who once died for him reappears in person for the first time in ages and, rather than let his Lynthari companion die now that he has gone, takes her in as a companion and disciple of her own.

Story so far - through chapter 73 (this book)

The fifth floor is Hell difficulty proper, and its quest is unlike any before: each survivor is separated onto their own instance and told to raise and protect a single disciple. Nathaniel is assigned a starved, guarded six-year-old half-demon girl, with small horns and red eyes, on a ruined, post-apocalyptic world overrun by human-derived monsters and stalked by one far deadlier blade-armed hunter, a 'Veil Guardian' of unreadable level whose nature is a mystery. Through a looted communicator he makes cautious first contact with the world's native survivors, trading with their wary leader and later dealing with a woman who answers in the leader's place. Bit by bit he draws the frightened child out and, learning she never had a real name, gives her one. His harsh, patient mentorship begins turning a self-protective street survivor into a devoted student, even as the ruined world's dangers press closer.

Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)

Granted entry at last to the survivors' hidden bunker, an underground refuge sheltering thousands, Nathaniel discovers his disciple carries a rare innate 'kinetic demon heart,' a second power source he begins helping her strengthen. He spends the days crafting gear for her and himself and teaching her to sense mana without her eyes, while she opens up about a childhood of starvation and a flight through a monster-filled forest before the system found her. Working through the population math of the bunker, he realizes its food supply cannot possibly match the number of mouths it feeds, and quietly resolves to learn why. Stonewalled by the eccentric local healer he presses for answers and, having his skin painted with a black-mana training circuit to reach a more central facility, covertly infiltrates a sealed tunnel beneath the bunker. There he finds the horror behind the arithmetic: a captive, endlessly regenerating healer, chained and repeatedly mutilated so his flesh can be harvested to feed the survivors above, who eat it without knowing its source.

Story so far - through chapter 88 (this book)

Nathaniel confirms that 'the Veil' covering the world was built ages ago by an ancient guild, then deliberately provokes and fights the Veil Guardian head-on. He inflicts near-crippling damage, destroying an arm, blinding an eye, shattering its jaw, but cannot land a killing blow; he loses a leg freeing himself from its bite and survives its final hunt only by suppressing all mana and enduring his own body being crushed in total silence. The Guardian lives, badly wounded, its purpose still unknown. Recovering, he refuses to bury the bunker's secret: he forces its leader to confess the truth to the entire population and personally frees the captive healer, giving him full choice over his own fate; the healer proves to be the father of the local granny-healer who had tended the disciple. As the bunker collapses into turmoil, Nathaniel and his disciple leave for good. She reaches level twenty and chooses her first true class, a kinetic channeler. The book ends on arrival rather than resolution: the two fly north and reach the wreck of a colossal fallen sky-fortress, once home to tens of thousands, with an intensely mana-dense valley glimpsed just beyond it, both entirely unexplored as the story closes.

How does it end? (ending)

Book three ends on the fifth floor, roughly midway through Nathaniel and his disciple's allotted time together, with the rest of the group scattered across separate instances and never reunited on-page after the floor split. The fourth-floor calamities are settled: the Living Tree and the ant Colony are destroyed, the armored Fallen Hero is killed by the group without Nathaniel, and several rival guildmasters are dead. Hadwin is the book's only major loss, killed defending Sophie and the twins. Nathaniel's closest Lynthari ally, feared at real risk of dying once he left, instead survives under the protection of the reborn ancient being, their future together left open. On the fifth floor Nathaniel has raised his half-demon disciple from a starved street child into a devoted student who has just chosen her first class; he has fought the monstrous Veil Guardian to a near-fatal standstill without killing it, and forced a native bunker's hidden cannibalism into the open, freeing its captive victim. The two arrive, at the very end, at a colossal fallen sky-fortress with a dense mana 'valley' beyond it, both unexplored. Left open for the next book: the fortress and the valley; the Veil Guardian's survival and motive; the group's eventual reunion; the mysterious voice and its 'ruler of greed'; and the true nature and purpose of the disciples each survivor now protects.
