Hell Difficulty Tutorial 5 recap

In short (whole book)

Book five opens with Nathaniel Gwyn's cliffhanger ambush revealed as a brutal training trap set by his old teacher Lissandra, now in a younger form. Over a two-week trial she rebuilds his fundamentals; along the way she kills the champion Niall, and Nathaniel is formally recognized as a champion candidate before they part. Reuniting with his group, he helps free the captive twins, then enters 'Beyond' - a realm between the tutorial and the real world - where a betrayed expedition ends with the feared demon lurker Whitey nearly killing him. After a deadly crossing of a lethal 'Mana Desert,' Nathaniel is trapped by an imprisoned six-armed champion, kills him using a single grain of the desert's killing sand, and escapes. Following a long training interlude in which the group's painful backstories surface and part of the group splits off, he returns to Beyond with new allies, hunts down the lurker Specter, and challenges Whitey to a life-and-knowledge duel. He wins - barely, and only through overwhelming stored mana - advancing a full rank and beginning real kinetic-energy training under a construct of Whitey. The book ends with a new capture threat looming, a supposedly dead entity possibly resurfacing, and Earth itself beginning its own system 'awakening.'

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

In the first four books, an ordinary young man, Nathaniel Gwyn, is pulled with a crowd of strangers into a lethal fantasy 'tutorial' run like a game of levels and skills, and locked to its deadliest 'Hell' setting. Detached and calculating, he survives the early floors by remaking himself into a fragile but devastating mana specialist, losing limbs and friends along the way. An ancient, near-omnipotent woman, Lissandra, trains him, reveals herself as an artificial copy of a greater being, and destroys her own world before his eyes. Reunited with a close-knit group of fellow survivors - among them the lightning-wielding Tess, the healer Lily, the sisters Isabella and Sophie, and the telepathic corgi Biscuit - he fights through a city of ancient invaders and reaches a fifth floor that isolates each survivor to raise a single disciple. Nathaniel is assigned a starved half-demon girl, Vega, and, using a rare mirror, creates an independent clone of himself who ultimately dies to secure her future. Nathaniel sees her safely home, clears the floor, and reunites with his group on the sixth for the tutorial's first cross-difficulty tournament, winning it outright while his rivalry with the manufactured fighter Savant and his buried history with Tess both go unresolved. His estranged sister Victoria surfaces as the champion of a parallel round of Earth's tutorial. In the finale, tricked by a false reward, Nathaniel is delivered into an ambush back on the fifth floor, sensing three waiting presences as the book ends.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Book five opens by resolving the previous cliffhanger: the presences waiting to ambush Nathaniel include his old teacher Lissandra, now in a younger, physically flawless form. Rather than kill him, she has staged the whole trap as the start of a brutal two-week training regimen. On her order, her candidate disciple executes the captured mass murderer left over from the last book, and Lissandra binds Nathaniel to five survival rules - each backed by the threat of death - forbidding him his usual crutches: no using concentration to suppress his own emotions, and no drawing on his rare black mana, while demanding he reach specific levels and skill milestones. She drives him past exhaustion, pinning him immobile under crushing inscriptions, capping his mana far below normal, and forcing him to fight with his body and raw kinetic energy rather than brute-forcing everything with sheer mana volume. The group travels north to an enormous underground workshop-city ruled by a historical champion, Niall, whose shattered mana heart is slowly killing her. Lissandra strikes a bargain - a method to contain Niall's affliction in exchange for information and 'a lesson' for Nathaniel - and, in a fit of pride, Nathaniel voluntarily raises his own stakes, agreeing to reach five skills at level fifty instead of the original three.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Nathaniel meets the champion Niall directly - unexpectedly plain-spoken and profane - and endures a lethal pressure-dome she builds at Lissandra's request, holding out for hours past the point it should have killed him. Niall explains the difference between his brute-force approach to mana and the refined, hard-to-disrupt style she and Lissandra use, and points out his key weakness: he cannot protect his mana once it leaves his body. Lissandra hands over her containment method, and Niall, moved to genuine hope for the first time, believes she may soon be able to remove the object killing her. Then Lissandra reveals her true intent: she considers Niall, like herself, a mere fake - a copy of a champion who died long ago - and demands all of Nathaniel's mana in order to kill her cleanly. Nathaniel refuses outright, his first open defiance of her, and declares his personal code aloud; the act triggers a milestone, advancing his Pride subclass from Initiate to Adept. Lissandra takes his mana by force anyway and kills Niall off-page, returning visibly wounded and carrying the champion's heart. The group flees the collapsing workshop and continues north.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

The group reaches a second ignition station, a vast heat-drawing pyramid called Cinder, colonized by warring gangs. Lissandra splits off, and Nathaniel explores the pyramid's depths alone, fighting heat-based monsters toward its molten core and shedding his restraints along the way to train at his own pace. At the core he confronts a wary creature he nicknames Savi, revealed as a mutated hydra circling the buried body of the pyramid's dead founding champion; killing it brings Nathaniel to level 250 and a body upgrade. Lissandra returns to fight him one-on-one at the core, a battle he prepares for elaborately but still loses when she connects directly to his heart and turns it against him. Rather than killing him, she formally judges and recognizes him as a champion candidate, completing his trial. They part on genuinely warmer terms, without either ever using 'master' or 'disciple,' and she promises to meet him again in a year at the coming second tournament. Meanwhile, on her home world, Nathaniel's disciple Vega is approached by a mysterious, powerful projected figure who claims to be guarding her against a dangerous ruler.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Nathaniel returns alone to the sixth floor and combines two passives into a new one that converts kinetic impacts into stored mana. He commits to a self-imposed restriction: no black mana until his core skills reach level sixty. Coordinating with his group, he infiltrates a lawless 'Bone Fortress' under a false identity to stop it reinforcing the rival 'Black Tower' faction, while the others assault the Black Tower itself; the operation succeeds and the long-captive telepathic twins are finally freed. Nathaniel then spends a token to enter 'Beyond' - a dangerous realm sitting between the tutorial and the real world - for his third trial, a solo hunt through an endless high-gravity jungle. After a punishing chase he kills the trial's 'King of the Forest,' completing it and unlocking the ability to buy repeat stays in Beyond and receive a personal handler.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Entering Beyond in earnest, Nathaniel is assigned a handler - a sardonic woman who advises him to hide his rarest abilities - and released onto its harsh surface, where a hostile presence hunts him the instant he uses mana. He reaches an underground settlement and learns how Beyond works: its guilds, rankings, and a friendly local, Duncan, who sells him information. Posing as a straightforward kinetic-energy melee fighter and concealing his true strength, he joins a twenty-person expedition into the 'First Dungeon.' His five-person unit includes a senior barrier mage, Eugan; an emotion-shifting winged scout, Shayna; a cruel close-range fighter, Roculus; and a silent, grey-skinned scout, Rat. Almost the moment the group enters the dungeon's first floor - a poisoned wasteland - it is attacked by intelligent reanimated corpses, and three of Nathaniel's four unit-mates abruptly abandon him and Shayna mid-fight, the first sign the newcomers have been set up as bait.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

The scheme becomes clear: the newcomers were seeded as bait for the floor's 'lurkers' - its reanimated dead, drawn to whoever kills them - while the trusted core avoided the fighting. Nathaniel turns the trap around, killing the plant in his unit and allying with the winged scout Shayna to survive. But Shayna twice tries to kill him for his loot and dies in the attempt. As the treacherous expedition leader overpowers Nathaniel directly, the floor's most feared named lurker arrives: Whitey, a white-haired demon with total mastery of kinetic energy, who slaughters the rest of the group barehanded. With his stay-token seconds from expiring, Nathaniel hides, and the system pulls him out just before Whitey's killing blow lands - dropping him back on the sixth floor, critically wounded. There the healer Lily finds him, having waited nearby expecting exactly this, and patches him back together. She reports the group has taken over the rival faction's territory, with Tess now its leader.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

Reunited with his group - now rebranded the 'Angry Kittens' after seizing the rival faction's base - Nathaniel settles into a training and recovery stretch. He bonds a punishing 'restrictive training emblem' onto his own body, which constantly strains him to force growth, and coaches the group's weaker members, threatening to send the underpowered telepathic twins down to an easier difficulty if they fall behind. He studies the damaged arcane items he recovered in Beyond and lays plans for the group's next move: crossing toward the distant Central Region. They travel to a final outpost, The Last Rest, at the edge of a strange 'Mana Desert' - an expanse of lethal white sand, the ground remains of ancient destroyed cities and champions, where mana cannot regenerate at all. Fending off locals who prey on departing groups, they prepare to cross the desert aboard a battered floating vehicle the outpost has nicknamed 'Death Trap.'

Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)

Aboard Death Trap, the group crosses into the Mana Desert, where mana regeneration stops entirely and the wind-blown white sand grinds any exposed victim to nothing. Nathaniel establishes a fearsome reputation, and the crossing turns deadly as the vehicle's guides begin dying one by one under mysterious, wound-less circumstances. The killings culminate in an open ambush against the group, revealing a conspiracy among some of the guides and the ship's two strongest passengers - four-armed Thylarin brothers, one named Dravos. Nathaniel purges every trace of mana from his own body so the sand cannot kill him, walks out onto it, and drags the fleeing brothers back captive. Under questioning, they reveal the truth: the Mana Desert is one of several 'containment cells' built to imprison a single powerful being, and they have deliberately steered the ship toward the champion trapped in this one. Battered and off course, Death Trap finally crashes at its destination as a massive storm closes in.

Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)

The survivors descend to the prisoner at the desert's heart: a calm, six-armed Thylarin champion who has been trapped for a century. He secretly amplifies the whole group's emotions, fraying them against one another, and it emerges that Tess has been quietly meeting him and even helped strand the ship here. Offering guidance in exchange for a favor, the champion springs his real trap: a teleport array that scatters the rest of the group to safety in the Central Region while deliberately stranding Nathaniel and the two captive brothers behind. Nathaniel kills the brothers, then confronts the champion, who admits the whole 'deal' was always a betrayal meant to harvest them all. In a close, desperate fight, Nathaniel releases a single grain of the lethal white sand he has secretly carried inside his own body onto the champion's skin - triggering the prison's own defenses to flood in and kill him - and escapes at the last instant into Beyond. His handler shares rare lore: the tutorial has thirteen floors, each tied to one of thirteen 'rulers.' The fate of the champion's mysterious 'bond' entity is left unconfirmed.

Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)

Nathaniel combines two skills into a new one, Leyline, giving him a durable, far-reaching network of anchors, and escapes the reshaped desert - now roamed by giant sand-whales - to reunite with Lily, the twins, and Biscuit at a border camp. Over a long training and crafting interlude, the group finally shares their childhood histories: Nathaniel reveals for the first time that his father was a violent alcoholic, that his sister killed the man to protect their mother, and that she has been imprisoned ever since, leaving Nathaniel known as 'the brother of a murderer.' He learns the group has fractured - Sophie has taken Izzy and left Tess's main party after a serious falling-out. Nathaniel buys a powerful mind-defense passive, and Lily advances her body-modification and healing-mark research, even preserving one of his severed arms as an emergency reserve. Having crafted weapons from the desert's white sand for money, he sets out for a fresh Beyond expedition to try to push deeper into the First Dungeon.

Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)

Back in Beyond, Nathaniel gathers a seven-person party of fellow Earth attendees for a first-floor expedition, among them the composed Leticia and her extraordinary golden retriever Luna, and the couple Derick and Noelle. He agrees to act as the group's decoy, drawing the floor's dangerous named lurkers onto himself. The party is battered through a series of fights - one member, the fast, flickering lurker Specter, badly wounds several of them before escaping. Luna astonishes everyone by speaking aloud in a human voice. Nathaniel hunts Specter down and kills him alone, then deliberately flares his presence to pull a large lurker swarm off the others. Into that swarm drops Whitey, the white-haired demon lurker who nearly killed him before, who freezes and slaughters every lurker present. With his escape token spent, Nathaniel formally challenges Whitey to a champion's wager: his own life and status against all of Whitey's knowledge of kinetic energy. Unseen, several rulers argue over and quietly approve the wager.

Story so far - through chapter 85 (this book)

Nathaniel wins the duel - breaking his own black-mana restriction to do it - but only by grinding Whitey's lurker body down with an enormous stockpile of stored mana, a resource advantage he openly admits was closer to trickery than a true victory. He is left badly hurt but alive, unaware that two hidden observers watched the whole fight and now intend to capture him, for an unnamed party, the moment he reaches Beyond's second floor. Back safe, his formal rank rises from D to C, and he begins receiving Whitey's promised knowledge through a mental construct built from the dead lurker's memories - a construct that reveals Whitey died by betrayal centuries ago and starts, harshly, teaching him kinetic-energy technique. Nathaniel also reopens a buried thread, coming to suspect that the imprisoned champion's 'bond' entity did not truly die, and that Sophie may be carrying a surviving fragment of it west toward a hidden city of mind-mages. The book closes on Earth itself: after tutorial 'returnees' surface in Japan, a formal system message announces that Earth has now begun its own 'awakening.' Every named member of Nathaniel's group is alive; he ends the book stronger, mid-training under Whitey, with the group scattered across the Central Region and a far larger conflict clearly coming.

How does it end? (ending)

Book five ends with Nathaniel physically safe, significantly stronger, and mid-training rather than at rest. He has just won a life-and-knowledge wager against the ancient named lurker Whitey - though only by overwhelming his lurker body with a vast stockpile of stored mana, which he freely admits was closer to a resource trick than a clean victory, breaking his own black-mana restriction in the process. His formal rank has risen from D to C, and he is now being taught kinetic-energy technique by a knowledge-construct built from Whitey's own memories, a tense arrangement Whitey frames as breaking him down to rebuild him. Every named member of his group is alive but scattered: Tess leads one party deeper into the Central Region, while Sophie and Izzy have split off westward toward a reclusive city of mind-mages. Two threads are left deliberately open. Unknown to Nathaniel, hidden observers have marked him for capture by an unnamed party the moment he reaches Beyond's second floor. And he has come to suspect that the 'bond' entity of the champion he killed in the Mana Desert did not fully die, and that Sophie may unknowingly be carrying a surviving fragment of it. The book's final beat turns to Earth: after tutorial 'returnees' violently surface in Japan, a formal system broadcast announces that Earth has now begun its own 'awakening' - signaling that the long-background Earth subplot is about to collide with the main story.
