In short (whole book)

Lazarus awakens in an Undertaker torture chamber with a dangerous Sigil of Rage, no memory of a failed heist, and Fairfax, his mentor and thief lord, dead nearby. His search for Molly, Edith, and Ransom exposes Edith's devil magic, a conspiracy within Iberia's criminal guilds, and mass-produced soul shards capable of turning people into devils. The thief lords unite against the renegade Damned and assault a blighted estate where a crimson-moon ritual is charging the stolen artifact. Lazarus damages it, displacing his party and the conspirators to a hell plane. Ransom reveals that the Holy Ascendancy intends to use the portal to invade Iberia. A devil-transformed thief lord kills Edith, Quinn, and Molly before Lazarus kills him and follows the artifact's instruction to carry it through the portal, sealing the route. Lazarus, Sawyer, and the maimed Ransom survive but are arrested. Molly and Quinn apparently respawn in the hell plane, while Lazarus's memories and the artifact's purpose remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Lazarus wakes tied to a torture table in an Undertaker base, unable to remember the heist that separated him from Molly, Ransom, and Edith. A newly burned Sigil of Rage gives him exceptional physical power at the cost of injury and uncontrollable fury. He escapes and discovers that Fairfax, his mentor and the Grim Shadows' thief lord, has been murdered. After fighting his way to Caden, Lazarus learns that a mysterious woman delivered both him and Fairfax to the gang and wanted the sigil removed. He kills Caden, burns the Undertakers' base, and reunites with Molly. She remembers that their party entered a restricted magical building to steal an unknown artifact, but she died at the window while the others went inside. Lazarus and Molly attempt to deceive the woman at Stone Sailor's Pier. She exposes their counterfeit, turns four followers into devils, and is revealed as Edith. Edith's chaos stone drains power from Lazarus's sigil, and her attack kills him after he saves Molly. He respawns and reports the crisis to Isabella. She explains that Fairfax had been investigating an old magical obligation binding Iberia's five thieves' guilds to the palace, suggesting that his death, the heist, and Edith's actions may form part of a wider threat.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Isabella takes interim command of the Grim Shadows and recruits Quinn, a mage with useful scholarly contacts, to investigate Edith's transformation and Lazarus's sigil. At William's library, the group learns that forcing devils into physical hosts requires specialized talismans and extensive preparation. William identifies Lazarus's mark as a Sigil of Rage without a loyalty compulsion, but warns that sigils can erase memory. He also explains that Edith's stone can suppress a sigil and redirect its energy into spells. A bounty hunter then ambushes Lazarus, Molly, and Quinn under a contract meant to remove Lazarus from action for two days. Defeated, the hunter agrees to a limited truce and to guide other hunters toward the reward for capturing Edith. Meanwhile, the king sends most of Iberia's military out of the city, shortages and price increases spread fear, and a mass killing pushes rival noble houses toward open conflict. Witnesses report that retainers became devils during the attack. Isabella concludes that Edith must have substantial resources and expert backing. With Ransom still missing, Fairfax's killer unknown, and the stolen artifact unidentified, she prepares to ask the other thief lords for a coordinated search.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

At the Council of Thieves, Isabella claims Fairfax's vacant seat and presents the evidence linking Edith to his death and the devil attacks. The leader of the Damned, whose gang held Lazarus and Fairfax, challenges her account. When pressed about Edith, he attacks the council and transforms a sewer creature into a devil-possessed monster. Lazarus, Molly, and the surviving thieves kill it, but the Damned leader escapes and the Crimson Rats leader is lost in the fighting. The remaining council recognizes Isabella as a thief lord and declares war on the Damned. The other leaders admit that Edith and Ransom had been secretly recruited as safeguards against Lazarus and Molly, but deny knowing about the heist or the larger conspiracy. Isabella organizes a coordinated purge while noble forces face one another in the streets. Sawyer continues tracking Edith, though competing rewards threaten to break up his team. During raids on Damned hideouts, Lazarus's group discovers that craftsmen have been mass-producing Hellborn Soul Shards from collected remains and precious metals. A captive estimates that one to two hundred shards exist. The allies believe these objects can force devils into unsuspecting hosts, transforming the guild war into an urgent effort to locate the shards and prevent mass possession.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

The party brings a captured shard-maker and his evidence to the thief lords. Their raid map shows that the Damned have abandoned many southern positions, suggesting that their leader is concentrating forces around the stolen artifact. Sawyer reports that Edith defeated both thieves and hunters before fleeing south. At the same time, a crimson moon ignites above Iberia, confirming that a dangerous ritual has begun. Scouting a southern noble estate, Lazarus and Molly find widespread blight, captives, and nearly a hundred Damned defenders. A beam links the estate to the moon and releases a corrupting wave. A masked mage among the thief lords recognizes an old dark ritual designed to draw lunar power into an object, likely the artifact. Fearing that the spreading blight could destroy Iberia's food supply, the allied guilds attack immediately. The Damned retreat behind their fortifications and activate more than three dozen soul shards, changing their own fighters into devils. Lazarus, Molly, Quinn, and Sawyer defeat a powerful Devourer, but the allied force loses nearly half its strength. Lazarus's sigil activates without his choice during the battle. With the clouds clearing from the crimson moon and the ritual still advancing, the survivors regroup for a final push into the estate.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

While the thief lords attack the estate openly, Lazarus, Molly, Quinn, and Sawyer enter the mansion and find Ransom imprisoned in a crystal ritual circle under Edith's control. An unseen man claims that magical compulsion gives him control of the renegade thief lord and his guild. When the party attacks, Lazarus damages the floating artifact as its portal opens, displacing the combatants and part of the mansion to a hell plane. The party frees Ransom, who has lost an arm. He explains that the Holy Ascendancy planned to use the artifact to open an invasion route into Iberia, bypassing Coldscar and the Bulwark. At the portal, Edith reveals that she controls the renegade thief lord's compulsion. The thief lord activates three soul shards and becomes a devil, then kills Edith and Quinn. Molly dies healing Lazarus while he fights to close the portal. Lazarus kills the transformed thief lord, and the sentient artifact instructs him to carry it into Iberia so the passage will seal. The portal closes and the invasion is repelled. Lazarus awakens under guard with Sawyer and Ransom, while Captain Fontaine holds the dormant artifact. Molly and Quinn apparently respawned in the hell plane and cannot be contacted. The survivors are taken before an Iberian matriarch to explain the crisis. The city and its guilds are badly damaged, Lazarus's missing memories remain unrecovered, and the Ascendancy now treats the party as kill-on-sight enemies.

How does it end? (ending)

In the hell plane, Ransom explains that Edith and the renegade thief lord were helping the Holy Ascendancy open a route into Iberia that would bypass its defenses. At the portal, Edith admits that she controls the thief lord's magical compulsion. He uses three soul shards to become a devil, kills Edith and Quinn, and later kills Molly as she heals Lazarus. Lazarus destroys the transformed thief lord and takes the artifact. The artifact speaks to him and directs him through the portal, which seals behind him and turns back the immediate invasion. Lazarus awakens in Iberian custody beside Sawyer and the badly injured Ransom. Captain Fontaine has seized the dormant artifact and brings the prisoners before an Iberian matriarch. Molly and Quinn appear to have respawned in the hell plane, leaving them alive but unreachable. The thief-guild alliance has suffered severe and uncertain losses, and the city faces the consequences of the guild war, noble violence, blight, and the destroyed estate. Edith is dead, but her motive and the wider control behind the conspiracy remain unclear. Lazarus still bears the unstable sigil and has not recovered the memories of the heist or its origin, while the Ascendancy now regards the group as enemies to be killed on sight.
