After killing Aenghus Og, Atticus tries to stabilize his life in Tempe and begin Granuaile's apprenticeship. Instead he faces overlapping problems: a hostile group of witches targets Malina's local coven, dangerous Bacchants threaten the city, and allies such as Leif and Laksha call on old bargains. Atticus combines Druidic bindings with the very different magic of the local witches, taking care to protect Granuaile and ordinary residents while preventing supernatural violence from attracting official attention. He and Leif deal with the Bacchants, while the larger alliance defeats the attacking witches and contains the forces they release. The struggle preserves the local supernatural balance but exposes divisions among supposed friends. With Tempe temporarily secure, Leif's earlier claim remains: Atticus must help him invade Asgard and kill Thor.

Previously, Atticus O'Sullivan had spent centuries hiding in Tempe from Aenghus Og, the Irish god who wanted the sword Fragarach. Atticus drew magic from the earth and shared a mental bond with his wolfhound, Oberon. When Aenghus finally attacked, Atticus worked with the Morrigan, Flidais, Malina's Polish witch coven, vampire lawyer Leif Helgarson, and werewolf attorney Hal Hauk. The temporary alliance let him kill Aenghus and keep Fragarach, ending the pursuit but leaving several debts behind. Granuaile MacTiernan learned that Atticus was a genuine Druid and asked to be trained. He accepted her as his apprentice, beginning a demanding education expected to last years.

With Aenghus gone, Atticus wants to return to running his shop, caring for Oberon, and laying the foundations for Granuaile's apprenticeship. Peace proves temporary. Malina warns that her coven is threatened by witches whose history and magic make them exceptionally dangerous. Atticus's previous alliance with the Tempe witches gives him both a reason and an obligation to help. Other supernatural factions are also testing the city's balance, and Atticus realizes that the treaties meant to establish a quieter life may instead make him the person every faction expects to intervene.

The danger around Tempe broadens beyond a single coven dispute. Bacchants bring violent supernatural revelry into the area, and Atticus works with Leif and other local allies to prevent them from establishing themselves. The response demonstrates how fragile the city's informal balance is: vampires, werewolves, witches, and one Druid can cooperate against a common danger, but each party still keeps account of favors. Granuaile assists where she can without pretending that her early training has made her ready for direct magical combat. Even after the immediate Bacchant threat is checked, the hostile witches remain a more organized danger.

The attacking witches begin applying pressure directly to Malina's coven and to Atticus. Their magic includes methods his iron defenses and earth bindings cannot answer by themselves, so he relies on Malina's knowledge and on Laksha Kulasekaran, a witch experienced with possession and spirits. Cooperation is tense, particularly where Radomila's independent ambitions are concerned. Atticus strengthens protections, gathers materials, and tries to distinguish genuine warnings from attempts to manipulate him. The earlier confrontations have also consumed resources and favors that the defenders would prefer to save for the larger assault.

Repeated magical attacks strain the defenses around Atticus and the Tempe coven. The enemy is willing to unleash forces dangerous to bystanders as well as its intended targets, making containment as important as winning the fight. Atticus uses his mobility through the earth and his resistance to many forms of magic to disrupt the attackers, while Malina and Laksha counter techniques from their own traditions. The Morrigan's involvement confirms that the stakes have become deadly. Atticus keeps Granuaile outside the most dangerous confrontations, though she now sees how much judgment, preparation, and compromise her chosen path will require.

Atticus and the surviving members of Malina's alliance take the fight to the hostile witches. Their combined methods break through protections that none of them could have overcome alone. Supernatural forces released during the struggle threaten to turn a private conflict into a wider disaster, so the allies must close off those dangers as well as defeat the people directing them. The confrontation also brings concealed priorities among the local witches into the open. Atticus must keep the alliance focused long enough to prevent the attackers from turning Tempe into a battlefield that ordinary authorities cannot ignore.

The hostile witches are defeated and the dangerous magic they unleashed is contained, allowing Malina's coven and the city to survive. The alliance has paid a cost, and its internal distrust is not erased by victory. Atticus and Leif have also prevented the Bacchants from taking root in Tempe. Granuaile continues her apprenticeship, still near the beginning of a long education. The most serious unresolved promise belongs to Leif Helgarson: Atticus agreed to help the vampire travel to Asgard and seek revenge on Thor. Despite warnings that killing a major Norse god will bring retaliation and disrupt more than one pantheon, Atticus prepares to pay the debt.

Atticus and Malina's surviving allies defeat the hostile witches who came to destroy the Tempe coven, containing the destructive magic and summoned threats unleashed during the conflict. The victory preserves the local supernatural balance but does not restore trust among every member of the alliance. Atticus, Leif, and their allies also end the separate danger posed by the Bacchants, preventing their violent revels from establishing a foothold in Tempe. Granuaile remains committed to the long work of becoming a Druid, and Atticus continues her instruction. Leif then presses the most dangerous outstanding obligation: Atticus has promised to help him reach Asgard and take revenge on Thor. Although several powers warn that the expedition will provoke consequences far beyond a single fight, Atticus prepares to honor the debt, setting the course for the journey in Hammered.
