Hounded characters

By Kevin Hearne

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Atticus O'Sullivan (Protagonist)

Also known as Siodhachan O Suileabhain

Appears from the start

A very old Irish Druid living under a modern identity in Tempe, Arizona, where he runs an occult bookshop and herb store. He draws power through bindings to the earth, can speak mind-to-mind with his hound, and carries the enchanted sword Fragarach. Centuries of evading hostile gods have made him resourceful, cautious, and fond of keeping several escape plans ready.

Oberon (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Atticus's enormous Irish wolfhound and constant companion. Their magical mental link lets him converse with Atticus in clear thoughts. He is loyal and brave, but his attention is easily captured by food, hunting, and the prospect of meeting other dogs.

The Morrigan (Supporting)

Also known as The Chooser of the Slain

Appears from the start

An Irish goddess associated with battle and death who has known Atticus for centuries. Formidable and unpredictable, she sometimes warns him of danger while making it clear that divine help always carries its own motives.

Aenghus Og (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The Irish god who has pursued Atticus across centuries for possessing Fragarach. Powerful, vindictive, and skilled at working through both supernatural agents and modern institutions, he is the threat Atticus has spent much of his long life avoiding.

Mrs. MacDonagh (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Atticus's elderly Irish neighbor, a devout Catholic with a sharp eye for local activity and an unflappable acceptance of her unusual young friend. Their conversations give Atticus a welcome connection to ordinary human life.

Granuaile MacTiernan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A friendly bartender at Rula Bula who knows Atticus as a regular customer. Intelligent, curious, and more observant than he initially assumes, she is interested in the knowledge hidden behind his youthful appearance.

Malina Sokolowski (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

The leader of a Tempe coven whose members practice a Polish tradition of witchcraft. She approaches Atticus as a practical negotiator: her group can provide valuable magical help, but its history with him leaves ample reason for mutual caution.

Brighid (Supporting)

Also known as The First Among the Fae

First appears in chapter 8

The sovereign of the Irish Fae and a goddess of craft, healing, and poetry. She judges disputes involving her people with regal authority and expects old obligations and formal promises to be honored.

Leif Helgarson (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A centuries-old vampire who employs Atticus's legal firm and conducts business with polished restraint. His knowledge of supernatural politics and willingness to exchange favors make him useful, though Atticus never forgets that a vampire's interests are not his own.

Hal Hauk (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A werewolf attorney at the firm that handles Atticus's legal affairs. Calm and exact in professional matters, he also serves as Atticus's link to the local pack and understands how readily supernatural trouble can become a police or courtroom problem.

Flidais (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

An Irish goddess of wild animals and the hunt. Direct, dangerous, and far more comfortable in pursuit than in negotiation, she becomes involved when divine maneuvering brings a hunt to Atticus's territory.

Radomila (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 18

A formidable witch within Malina's coven whose ambitions and methods make her especially difficult for Atticus to read. Her presence complicates any alliance between the Druid and the witches.
