Six months after saving Crescent City, Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar are pulled back into the empire's war when Cormac Donnall, the Fae prince Bryce's father betroths her to, reveals himself as an agent of the human rebel network Ophion and asks for help finding a missing boy, Emile Renast, whose captured sister was a rare lightning-wielder. The search draws in Ruhn Danaan, the mer Tharion Ketos and the exiled wolf Ithan Holstrom, and ends with the discovery that the boy has no power at all. What they uncover instead is far larger: the Asteri who rule Midgard are parasites, the firstlight that powers every city is harvested from its own people, and the souls ferried to the Bone Quarter are consumed rather than laid to rest. It is what Danika Fendyr died knowing. When Rigelus of the Asteri comes for Bryce and the Horn of Luna she carries, Cormac is killed, Hunt, Ruhn and Baxian Argos are captured and taken to the Eternal City, and Bryce opens a portal with the Horn and escapes into another world entirely, arriving in front of strangers whose blade matches her own.

Previously, in House of Earth and Blood: Bryce Quinlan, half human and half Fae, lived in Crescent City on Midgard, a world ruled by Vanir on behalf of the Asteri, the immortal rulers seated in the Eternal City. She came home one night to find her best friend, the wolf Alpha Danika Fendyr, and Danika's entire pack slaughtered, apparently by a demon, and a human rebel was convicted of it. Two years later the killings resumed. Micah Domitus, the Archangel governing Valbara, ordered Bryce to investigate alongside Hunt Athalar, an enslaved fallen angel called the Umbra Mortis who was promised his freedom in exchange for the killer. The trail ran through a synthetic drug called synth, a demon bred to hunt by scent, and the theft of the Horn of Luna, a broken Fae artifact that can open passages between worlds. Micah proved to be the murderer: he had killed Danika for stealing the Horn and staged the later deaths to force it into the open. Danika had hidden it by grinding it into the ink of the tattoo down Bryce's back. When Micah opened a rift above the city and demons poured through, Bryce ran the city's ancient Gates, used Hunt's lightning to wake the Horn in her skin, and revealed herself as Starborn, sealing the rift and healing much of the damage. Micah died. So did Sandriel, the visiting Archangel Hunt killed rather than be sold to her, and Lehabah, the fire sprite who burned herself out defending Bryce. Bryce made the Drop into her full power with Hunt as her Anchor, and Hunt was freed. Bryce is now a publicly acknowledged Fae princess and Starborn heir, still carrying the Horn, watched by her father the Autumn King, by the Asteri, and by the Princes of Hel, while the empire's war against the human rebel network Ophion grinds on across the sea.

Six months after the battle for Crescent City, Bryce and Hunt are living together and trying to be ordinary: she at the gallery, he flying patrols with the 33rd under the new Governor, the Archangel Celestina, who is mild where Micah was merciless. Across the sea the empire's war with the human rebel network Ophion continues. A young rebel named Sofie Renast, a thunderbird whose lightning the Asteri hunt on sight, is captured by the Hind, the empire's spymaster, after breaking into a labor camp to reach her younger brother, Emile. Bryce's father, the Autumn King, betroths her without warning to Cormac Donnall, Prince of Avallen. Cormac wants the engagement no more than she does: he is an Ophion agent, Sofie was his lover, and he has come to Crescent City to find Emile before the empire does. He asks Bryce and Ruhn for help. Ithan Holstrom, newly cast out by the wolves, is meanwhile living on their couch.

The search for Emile Renast draws in half the city. Tharion Ketos is ordered by the River Queen to find the boy first, on terms he is not permitted to refuse. Ruhn takes his instructions from Ophion through an anonymous mind-to-mind contact who calls herself Daybright and will reveal nothing about who she is. Bryce, needing a way to trace someone nobody can find, goes to the Astronomer, who keeps three drugged mystics floating in tanks and rents out their sight. Ithan is trying to learn what happened to his brother Connor's soul after the massacre, and finds the keepers of the Bone Quarter unwilling to answer anything. The Asteri's arranged marriage between Governor Celestina and the young Witch-Queen Hypaxia Enador is announced, with neither woman consulted.

Cormac presses the group to earn Ophion's trust by taking part in its operations, and Hunt, who has more to lose than any of them, resists being dragged back into a rebellion that already cost him two centuries. The rebels are not one thing: Pippa Spetsos, who commands Ophion's Lightfall squadron, treats every Vanir as a target and unnerves her own allies. Bryce keeps working on what the Horn in her back can actually do and on what being Starborn means, questions the Fae will not answer honestly. Baxian Argos, the angel called the Helhound and once Sandriel's, has transferred to Crescent City and takes an interest in Bryce and Hunt that none of them can explain. Traces of Danika keep surfacing where they should not: she had been in contact with people she never mentioned.

An Ophion raid the group is drawn into ends in slaughter, with imperial forces waiting where they should not have been, and the question of who informed poisons everything afterward. The empire's response falls on Crescent City, and the limits of Celestina's gentler rule become plain. Bryce establishes that Danika had been in contact with Sofie Renast before either of them died, and that whatever Danika learned about the Asteri was worth dying to protect. Emile's trail leads out of the city toward the marshes and lakes beyond it, with Ophion, the empire, the River Queen and the Meat Market all converging on a boy none of them has ever met.

Emile is found, and the premise everyone has been fighting over collapses: the boy has no power at all. Sofie was the thunderbird, and she protected her brother by letting the world believe the gift was his. Sofie herself is confirmed dead. Tharion, ordered to deliver the boy to the River Queen, has to decide what he is willing to do for a monarch who does not accept refusals. Bryce, Hunt and Ruhn are left holding a rebellion's worth of trouble with nothing to show for it, while imperial pressure on the city keeps increasing and Cormac's grief makes him reckless.

Baxian reveals why he has been circling Bryce and Hunt: Danika was his mate, and he has spent two years quietly trying to finish what she started. What Danika had been investigating comes into focus, and it is not a drug ring or a stolen artifact but the Asteri themselves. Aidas, a Prince of Hel, tells Bryce that she descends from Theia, a Starborn queen, and that Hel's long war was never against Midgard but against the Asteri, who are not gods but parasites feeding on the world's magic. Ithan, coming at the same wall from a different direction, finds that the answers about the Bone Quarter are worse than the silence was.

The truth about how Midgard is powered comes out. Firstlight, the energy running every city on the planet, is harvested from the Vanir themselves, and the Bone Quarter is not a resting place: the souls ferried across the Istros are consumed, their secondlight drained into the same system. Every funeral the city has ever held was a delivery. Ithan learns what that means for his brother. Bryce, Hunt and Ruhn now understand what Danika discovered and why the empire killed to bury it, and Rigelus, the Bright Hand of the Asteri, begins taking a direct and personal interest in Bryce and in the Horn she carries.

With the scale of the lie established, the group has to decide what to do with it. Ophion fractures: Pippa's Lightfall squadron seizes the imperial war machines the rebels stole and demonstrates how little it cares who dies. The empire tightens its hold on Crescent City, and Celestina's position between the Asteri and the people she governs becomes untenable. Bryce works out that the Horn in her back, woken by Hunt's lightning, can do more than seal a rift: it can open one. Rigelus moves pieces toward Lunathion, and everyone close to Bryce becomes leverage against her.

The Asteri come for Bryce. Rigelus, having identified her as both the Starborn heir and the vessel carrying the Horn, arrives to collect her, and the city's defenses count for nothing against him. Hunt, Ruhn, Cormac and Baxian fight a battle they cannot win. Cormac dies. The rebellion in Valbara is broken and its cells rolled up, the Hind's work done thoroughly. Bryce's only remaining advantages are the artifact in her skin and the light in her blood, and she prepares to spend both.

Cornered at the Old Square Gate with the Asteri closing in, Bryce uses Hunt's lightning to wake the Horn inked into her back and tears open a portal to somewhere else entirely. Hunt, Ruhn and Baxian are taken alive and shipped to the Eternal City to be broken by the Hind and the Hammer, and there is nothing Bryce can do for them from where she is standing. She goes through the portal. She lands in another world, in a place she has never seen, facing a winged male trailing shadows and a woman who levels a blade at her that is unmistakably the twin of the Starsword she carries. Behind her, Crescent City is under the Asteri's heel; ahead of her are strangers whose weapons match her own.

Rigelus and the Asteri move openly against Crescent City once Bryce is identified as the Starborn heir carrying the Horn of Luna. Cormac Donnall is killed in the fighting, and the rebellion in Valbara is dismantled. Hunt Athalar, Ruhn Danaan and Baxian Argos are taken alive and shipped to the Eternal City, where the Hind and Pollux the Hammer are given charge of them, putting Hunt back in exactly the position he spent the whole book trying to avoid. Bryce, cornered at one of the city's ancient Gates, channels Hunt's lightning through the Horn in her back and tears open a portal out of the world entirely, stepping through with the Starsword and leaving everyone she loves behind. She lands in Prythian, a world she has never heard of, and is met immediately by a winged male trailing shadows and a woman leveling a dagger that is unmistakably the Starsword's twin, the first hard evidence anyone has had of where Midgard's Fae originally came from. Elsewhere, Tharion Ketos escapes the River Queen's court by selling his service to the Viper Queen; Ithan Holstrom is left holding the truth about the Bone Quarter and his brother; and Emile Renast, powerless and finally out of reach, is safe. Celestina's gentler rule has been exposed as the Asteri's leash, and Midgard's people still have no idea their world is being farmed.
