An eighteen-year-old with Asperger's syndrome who is intensely interested in forensic science and crime scenes. Jacob notices fine details, follows routines rigidly, interprets language literally, and finds unfamiliar social situations overwhelming. He stages practice investigations at home and monitors police activity.

Jacob and Theo's mother, who has spent years organizing family life around Jacob's needs and advocating for him in schools and medical settings. Emma loves both sons fiercely but recognizes that the accommodations required by one have often left the other feeling unseen.

Jacob's younger brother. Theo understands many of Jacob's routines but resents how completely they shape the household. Lonely and angry, he secretly enters other people's homes, not primarily to steal but to imagine himself inside families whose lives seem more ordinary.

A graduate student who works with Jacob as a social-skills tutor. Jess is patient but has her own relationship problems and commitments. Her regular meetings with Jacob make her one of the few people outside his family with whom he has sustained personal contact.

The police detective who leads the investigation after Jess disappears. Rich is a conscientious investigator and a divorced father who must distinguish useful evidence from behavior that may simply be unfamiliar to him.

A young defense attorney hired to represent Jacob. Oliver has limited experience with a case of this scale and must learn how autism affects Jacob's communication, behavior, and ability to tolerate legal proceedings. He is determined to prevent the jury from treating difference itself as proof of guilt.

Jess's boyfriend, whose troubled relationship with her draws police attention after she goes missing. His anger and their recent conflict make him an early subject of questions in the investigation.

Emma's former husband and the father of Jacob and Theo. Henry has largely remained outside the difficult daily work of raising the boys, but Jacob's arrest forces him back into contact with a family whose routines and resentments developed in his absence.

The prosecutor responsible for presenting the case against Jacob. She treats the physical evidence and Jacob's knowledge of the scene as grounds for a conventional murder case, while the defense argues that his behavior is being misread through expectations designed for neurotypical defendants.
