How to Speak Dragonese characters

The small, thoughtful heir of the Hairy Hooligan tribe on Berk, no better with a sword than he was and no closer to being the sort of Viking his father wants. He can speak Dragonese, the dragons' own language, which he learned by listening and which he still treats as a private matter rather than an accomplishment.

Hiccup's dragon: a tiny, toothless Common or Garden dragon, greedy, contrary and self-important, who obeys instructions only when it suits him and argues about everything in Dragonese.

The Roman officer commanding the fort, a comfortable, self-satisfied man who is in the archipelago to make money out of it. He regards Vikings as barbarians and dragons as merchandise, and takes Alvin's advice.

A very small, very blonde girl of about Hiccup's age, daughter of the Bog-Burglar chief and already an accomplished thief and escape artist. She is fearless to a degree that alarms even Hiccup, cannot be persuaded that any situation is hopeless, and has been trying to break out of Roman custody since she arrived in it.

Chief of the Bog-Burglar tribe and Camicazi's mother, a large and forceful woman whose tribe steals from everybody, and who cannot be in the same place as Stoick the Vast for long without a quarrel breaking out.
