Howl's Moving Castle recap

Sophie Hatter, resigned to a dull life as the eldest of three sisters, is cursed into an old woman by the jealous Witch of the Waste and, unable to speak of it, leaves home and takes refuge as cleaning lady in the roving castle of the notorious Wizard Howl. She strikes a secret bargain with Calcifer, Howl's fire demon: break the contract binding them and he will lift her curse. She finds Howl to be vain and slippery but not the heart-eating monster of rumor, and learns he is dodging both the vengeful Witch and the King, who wants him to find a lost prince and a missing wizard. As the Witch's schemes close in, it emerges that she has been assembling a person from parts of the very people who vanished. Sophie discovers her own knack for bringing things to life with words, breaks Calcifer's contract in a way that saves both demon and wizard by returning Howl's heart, defeats the Witch's magic, and frees herself from her curse. Sophie and Howl admit they love each other.

In the land of Ingary, where fairy-tale rules hold sway, Sophie Hatter is the eldest of three sisters and therefore, she believes, fated to a small and unlucky life running the family hat shop. After an encounter with the vindictive Witch of the Waste, Sophie is cursed into the body of an old woman, and the same magic prevents her from telling anyone what has happened. Rather than stay, she sets out from town and, weary and footsore, talks her way into the famous moving castle of the Wizard Howl, a man rumored to eat girls' hearts. There she meets Howl's fire demon, Calcifer, burning in the hearth, and his young apprentice, Michael, and installs herself, brusquely, as the castle's much-needed cleaning lady.

Sophie makes a private bargain with Calcifer: if she can discover the secret contract that binds the fire demon to Howl and find a way to break it, Calcifer will lift the curse of old age from her. She settles into the castle's strange routine and comes to see that Howl, for all his fearsome reputation, is chiefly vain, dramatic, and slippery rather than truly wicked, forever chasing after girls and avoiding anything difficult. She learns that the castle's door opens by magic onto several different places at once. Meanwhile odd and unsettling things begin to gather around her, including a turnip-headed scarecrow that keeps appearing as though it wants something from her.

Sophie discovers that Howl leads a double life, slipping through one of the castle's magic doors into another world entirely, and that he is trying to avoid two dangers at once: the Witch of the Waste, who bears him an old grudge, and the King, who wishes to press him into royal service to find people who have gone missing. Sophie's own hidden talent starts to show itself, for the things she says while working, to hats, to a walking stick, seem to come true. Drawn deeper into Howl's affairs, and meeting his stern old teacher, she begins to sense that the many strange troubles around the castle are threads of a single, tightening knot.

The pressure on Howl mounts as the King formally charges him with finding the lost Prince Justin and the vanished royal wizard, dangerous errands that put him squarely in the Witch's path, and the Witch's curse on Howl draws closer to taking effect. Sophie, increasingly bound up in it all, keeps crossing paths with the persistent scarecrow and other odd figures, and realizes that the disappearances, the curses, and Howl's evasions are connected. She grows more confident in her own peculiar magic even as the danger to Howl and to everyone in the castle sharpens toward a crisis.

The Witch of the Waste's designs come into focus as it becomes clear she means to destroy Howl by striking through the very people who have vanished. Sophie learns more of Howl's true origins and character, and the secret at the center of everything moves within reach: the contract between Howl and Calcifer, and what the wizard gave up to make it. As the threat gathers, Sophie must weigh what she now understands about Howl's hidden heart against the danger bearing down on the castle, knowing that the bargain she made with the fire demon and the fate of everyone she has come to care about are about to be decided.

At the climax the Witch's plot is exposed and undone. She has been assembling a companion out of pieces of the people who disappeared, among them the lost prince and the missing royal wizard, and means to use them against Howl. Sophie, at last understanding that her own words carry real magic and that she has partly been holding her own curse in place, finds the courage to act decisively. She breaks the contract binding Calcifer to Howl in a way that gives the wizard back his heart and frees the demon, who chooses to remain. The Witch's power is destroyed along with her fire demon, and the people taken apart are restored. Sophie's youth returns, and Howl, unable to dodge his feelings any longer, and Sophie, no longer resigned to a small life, admit that they love each other and settle into a life together with the castle and its household.

Everything the Witch of the Waste has set in motion comes together at the climax. It is revealed that she has been building a perfect companion out of pieces of the missing people the King wanted found, including the lost prince and the vanished royal wizard, and she means to strike at Howl through them. Sophie, discovering that her own talent has been quietly shaping events, that she truly can talk life into things, finds the courage to act. She breaks the contract binding Calcifer to Howl in just the right way, which returns Howl's heart to his body and frees the fire demon, who chooses to stay on anyway. The Witch's power is undone and her own fire demon destroyed, and the people taken apart to make her creation are restored. Sophie's curse lifts once she stops half-holding it on herself, and her youth returns. Howl, no longer able to slither away from his feelings, and Sophie, no longer resigned to failure, admit that they love each other and mean to stay together, with the castle and its odd household intact.
