The last person he knows to remain uninfected in the Los Angeles area after a plague has transformed the population. By day he repairs and provisions his fortified house, hunts the dormant infected, and searches for an explanation; by night he endures their attacks. Isolation, grief, and a dependence on alcohol have narrowed his life to a harsh routine, but he continues trying to understand the catastrophe scientifically.

Neville's former neighbor and co-worker, now one of the infected who gather outside Neville's house after dark. Ben repeatedly calls for Neville to come outside, making him the most personal and persistent presence among the nightly attackers.

Neville's wife, remembered from the period when the epidemic reached their family. Her illness and death are central to the grief that shadows his solitary life and to his determination to understand what happened.

Robert and Virginia's young daughter, whose fate during the epidemic appears in Neville's memories. The authorities' treatment of the dead, including children, showed Neville how completely ordinary social life was collapsing.

A wary stray that appears near Neville's house during the day. Its presence gives him the first prospect of companionship he has had in years, but gaining the frightened animal's trust requires patience and restraint.

A woman Neville sees walking in daylight, apparently proving that another uninfected human has survived. She runs from him in terror, and after he catches her she says that she lost her husband to the plague. Neville wants to believe her, though years alone have made him suspicious.
