The elderly Reinhard Werner remembers growing up beside Elisabeth, the girl who became the subject of his poems and hopes. Their childhood closeness weakens when he leaves to study, and his letters and occasional visits cannot preserve the future he assumed they would share. While he is away, the prosperous Erich courts Elisabeth, and she eventually marries him and settles at his estate, Immensee. Reinhard visits the couple and recognizes that affection remains between himself and Elisabeth, but the moment for choosing each other has passed. He leaves rather than continue in a painful and impossible intimacy. In old age he lives alone with his books, still haunted by Elisabeth and by the image of a white water lily beyond his reach.

An elderly man named Reinhard Werner returns to his quiet home and settles among his books. A vision of Elisabeth carries him back to their childhood. The two children spend their days together, and Reinhard invents tales and writes verses for her. He confidently imagines that their companionship will continue into adulthood. During an outing in the woods he searches for strawberries that Elisabeth wants, but his efforts fail and the day ends with an early suggestion that desire does not guarantee possession. The old man's recollection presents this childhood bond as the emotional center of his life.

Reinhard leaves home to continue his education. Student life exposes him to new companions and distractions, but Elisabeth remains the subject of his private writing and memory. Distance alters their relationship: letters become less dependable than the easy understanding of childhood, and on a return home he finds that time has moved without him. Elisabeth has grown into a young woman, and their affection is mixed with reserve. Reinhard's belief that their shared future required no deliberate choice begins to fail.

While Reinhard is away again, Erich, a secure and practical landowner, becomes part of Elisabeth's life. News reaches Reinhard that she is to marry Erich. He cannot prevent the marriage, and the future he treated as certain disappears. Later he accepts an invitation to Immensee, Erich's estate, where he is received as an old family friend. The visit places Reinhard and Elisabeth together again, but now within the settled fact of her marriage. Their shared songs and memories reveal how much of their former feeling survives beneath their formal conduct.

At Immensee, Reinhard becomes increasingly aware that Elisabeth's marriage has not erased the bond between them, but neither of them can recover the life they failed to choose. A white water lily floating beyond reach on the lake becomes an image of that lost possibility. Reinhard decides to leave the estate. Elisabeth is deeply affected by the farewell, yet he goes and does not return to make a life with her. The narrative closes in the present with Reinhard old and alone. His books surround him, but the remembered figure of Elisabeth remains more powerful than his immediate world, preserving a love that endured inwardly while remaining unfulfilled.

During Reinhard's visit to Immensee, the old intimacy between him and Elisabeth briefly returns, but neither can undo her marriage to Erich or the years that separated them. Reinhard leaves the estate despite Elisabeth's distress and does not build a life with her. In the framing present, he is an old man living alone, and Elisabeth belongs to a past he can revisit only in memory. The image of the inaccessible white water lily comes to express the life and love he saw clearly but could not reach.
