The sixth Beneath the Dragoneye Moons novel follows Elaine as she begins a cautious romantic relationship with her much stronger companion Serondes while continuing to travel with a small group of elves toward an uncertain destination, still tending an unidentified egg she carries with her. The party's journey brings them into contact with a reclusive troll community for an autumn festival, an encounter that turns tense after an unintentional offense forces a hurried retreat, and later with a gnoll trading caravan whose leader Elaine helps in exchange for trade goods and hospitality. Throughout, Elaine weighs questions of trust and safety, and the eventual cost of the immortality she is being urged to pursue, while quietly working toward a plan to help a companion she has not yet been able to save.
