In short (whole book)

An engineered disease aimed at vampires pushes Exterreri into a worldwide Immortal War. Elaine first cures the outbreak, then joins Iona, Auri, and Fenrir in rescue work as nations and immortals devastate one another. With central authority and entire cities destroyed, the household saves an overcrowded bunker and helps establish Orthistown. Years of scarcity, attacks, and reconstruction turn the refuge into a durable community. Raccoon becomes its constable, Nina returns and accepts immortality, and Artemis joins its new ranger program after Julius's death. The Lifebringers restore the region's ecology, ending the immediate struggle for food. The household later kills a dragon in secret, and Elaine advances into Dawnbringer and Sage of Eternity, gaining stronger radiance, spatial movement, and a secure manor. Elsewhere, rival powers still compete for survivors, and the Immortal War remains unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Elaine is an accomplished healer and the Sentinel known as Sentinel Dawn. Her household includes her wife Iona, the phoenix Auri, and Fenrir. Together they are an established team capable of answering threats across Exterreri. These relationships place Elaine and her companions among the people expected to respond when a crisis threatens the nation.

Story so far - through chapter 1 (this book)

Arachne urgently calls Sentinel Dawn and her entire team to Castle Stormwatch. She has identified an engineered disease carried harmlessly by humans but rapidly fatal to vampires who feed on them. Exterreri regards the outbreak as an act of war and begins mobilizing. Arachne orders Elaine to eradicate the disease across the nation before reporting to the Sixth Legion at Massa, which is being deployed in a defensive role. Elaine gathers Iona, Auri, and Fenrir and starts in Sanguino, using the full reach of her healing abilities. The household sets out with two linked objectives: stop the immediate plague and then join the military response to the apparent attack on Exterreri.

Story so far - through chapter 2 (this book)

Elaine keeps her healing aura at full strength and clears the disease from Sanguino. She, Iona, Auri, and Fenrir then spend several days moving through Exterreri's population centers until the initial outbreak has been purged nationwide. Elaine suspects the plague is only the first move in a broader conflict. At Massa, the team finds only part of the Sixth Legion. Its commander, Katerina, explains that the Senate can divide legions into four-cohort formations during emergencies, spreading veteran leadership across more forces. Elaine reaches the Sixth Legion's command area to receive her next orders, but an explosion strikes the complex at that moment. The medical mission has succeeded, while the assault on Massa opens a new and immediate crisis for Elaine's household and the legion.

Story so far - through chapter 3 (this book)

The bombing at Massa remains unresolved as events elsewhere reveal a rapidly expanding chain of retaliation. An attacker destroys the centers of eight Urwan cities with high-velocity projectiles, killing enormous numbers before a guardian stops her ascent to godhood. Urwa's ruler treats the strike as revenge for the engineered plague and releases lethal volers across rural territory. One voler kills the last descendant of an ancient elf. In response, the elf uses light-based movement to launch pebbles at nearly the speed of light, annihilating cities and becoming a god through the destruction. A defender at Sanguino diverts one such blast into the sea. The redirected force destroys Arachne's underwater refuge and creates a tsunami that hits Nippon Koku. Arachne survives under Knight's protection, and Knight vows to answer the unknown attacker. The guardians recognize the spreading Immortal War but cannot contain all of its simultaneous catastrophes.

How does it end? (ending)

Years after the first attacks, Orthistown has grown from an overcrowded refuge into an organized settlement with farms, defenses, civic institutions, and rangers. Elaine and Iona rebuild their home. Auri supports the town, Fenrir guards it, Nina is alive and immortal under White Dove's truthfulness curse, and Raccoon serves as constable. Artemis relocates after Julius's confirmed death and takes charge of training the settlement's first rangers. Katerina continues leading a separate coastal community, while Knight reports that he and his companion survive but keeps their work secret. After the household secretly kills a white dragon, its remains become a concealed resource for future equipment. Elaine completes two class advancements, becoming Dawnbringer and Sage of Eternity. Her improved radiance, flight, teleportation, and portal-linked manor greatly strengthen the household. The final interlude shows that the wider conflict has not ended: a demon polity and an elven empire are competing to annex surviving towns. Schoon Verfrist's attempt to claim one settlement is interrupted by an unidentified witch with a phoenix, leaving the town's allegiance and the larger Immortal War open.
