Dublin detectives Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox investigate the murder of twelve-year-old Katy Devlin, found at an archaeological dig in Knocknaree. Rob secretly has another identity: he was Adam Ryan, the only child recovered when his friends Peter and Jamie vanished in the same woods in 1984. The new case revives fragmentary memories and destabilizes his close partnership with Cassie. Suspicion moves through Katy's family, anti-motorway politics, and the dig before evidence leads to Damien Donnelly, who confesses to killing Katy. Cassie recognizes that Katy's older sister Rosalind manipulated Damien into the crime in order to preserve her control over the family. Rosalind avoids prosecution, while Damien bears the legal blame. Rob's evasions and emotional withdrawal ruin his relationship with Cassie and cost him his place on the Murder Squad. Katy's case is explained, but the childhood disappearance remains unresolved.

In 1984, three children enter the woods at Knocknaree and only Adam Ryan is found. He is bloodied, his shoes contain someone else's blood, and he cannot explain what happened to Peter Savage and Jamie Rowan. Twenty years later Adam calls himself Rob and works as a Dublin Murder Squad detective; only his partner and closest friend, Cassie Maddox, knows his past. A new case brings them to Knocknaree, where twelve-year-old Katy Devlin has been found dead at an archaeological dig. Rob conceals his identity from their superintendent so he can remain on the investigation. Katy was a gifted dancer, and her father Jonathan is prominent in a campaign against a motorway planned through the site. The detectives begin with both the Devlin household and the political conflict as possible sources of the crime.

Rob and Cassie reconstruct Katy's last movements and examine the complicated Devlin family. Her mother is devastated, her twin Jessica is withdrawn, and her older sister Rosalind is composed and unusually eager to help. The motorway dispute has produced threats, but the physical evidence does not fit a simple political attack. Interviews at the dig widen the field of suspects and suggest Katy's body was placed there after death. Being back in Knocknaree triggers flashes of Rob's childhood, yet none supplies a reliable account of Peter and Jamie's disappearance. He becomes increasingly invested in the possibility that the old and new crimes are connected, while Cassie tries to keep the inquiry grounded in evidence.

The investigation uncovers secrets that complicate the Devlins' public image and weakens the theory that anti-motorway enemies targeted Katy. Rob's memories and nightmares intensify as the dig approaches closure. He and Cassie remain personally inseparable, but the pressure exposes how much their partnership depends on avoiding direct discussion of their feelings. Rosalind continues giving the detectives a polished account of the family, while Jessica provides a less controlled view of life at home. The team identifies Damien Donnelly, a vulnerable young man linked to Rosalind and the site, as someone requiring closer attention.

Rob's obsession with recovering the lost childhood story begins to damage his judgment. He and Cassie sleep together, but afterward he withdraws and treats the encounter as a mistake, deeply hurting her and undermining the trust on which their work depends. On the case, evidence increasingly points away from a stranger or political conspiracy and toward someone close enough to know Katy's routines. Cassie becomes wary of Rosalind's ability to shape other people's responses. Damien's relationship with Rosalind and his access to the relevant places bring him toward the center of the murder inquiry.

The detectives build a case against Damien Donnelly. Under questioning he confesses to killing Katy and describes acting under Rosalind's emotional influence. The confession explains the mechanics of the murder, but Cassie sees that Rosalind selected and controlled Damien, turning his devotion into a weapon against her sister. Katy's talent and approaching independence threatened Rosalind's dominance within the family. Because Rosalind kept herself removed from the physical crime and can exploit her youth and the limits of the evidence, the investigators cannot readily hold her responsible. Rob and Cassie's partnership has by now nearly collapsed, and his secret connection to Knocknaree places his career at risk.

Damien bears legal responsibility after confessing, while Rosalind escapes an effective prosecution despite Cassie's understanding of how she engineered the killing. The Devlin family is left with Katy dead, Jessica vulnerable, and the truth only partly recognized. Rob's lies, fixation, and treatment of Cassie destroy both their friendship and their working partnership. Cassie leaves the Murder Squad and later builds a life with detective Sam O'Neill. Rob is transferred to Domestic Violence and remains isolated. Most painfully, the renewed investigation never solves his own childhood case: Peter and Jamie are still missing, and the fragments he recovers do not form a trustworthy explanation of what happened in the woods.

Damien Donnelly confesses that he killed Katy, but the detectives establish that Rosalind engineered the crime. She cultivated Damien's devotion and persuaded him that Katy had to be stopped, largely because Katy's success and independence threatened Rosalind's control within the family. Rosalind anticipated the investigation and uses her age and the available evidence to remain beyond an effective prosecution. Rob's conduct has meanwhile destroyed his partnership with Cassie: after sleeping with her he retreats, lies, and mishandles both their friendship and parts of the case. Cassie transfers away and later begins a relationship with Sam O'Neill. Rob is removed from Murder and sent to Domestic Violence. Katy's murder is solved only imperfectly, and the 1984 disappearance of Peter and Jamie remains unsolved. Rob recovers no dependable final memory of what happened in the woods.
