By Pierce Brown

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Darrow (Protagonist)

Also known as The Reaper

Appears from the start

The Red-born hero of the revolution, now a decade older and worn down by a war that will not end. Once the hidden agent who toppled the old order, he is the most celebrated and feared soldier of the young Solar Republic, and its most divisive figure. Haunted by all he has done and losing patience with politics, he strains against the government he helped create, convinced that only relentless force can secure the freedom his people bled for.

Virginia au Augustus (Supporting)

Also known as Mustang

Appears from the start

Darrow's wife and the leader of the Solar Republic, carrying the weight of a fragile new government at war. Brilliant, principled, and pragmatic, she tries to hold a fractious coalition together through law and compromise where Darrow would use the sword. Her marriage and her politics are both tested by the strain of an unfinished revolution.

Sevro au Barca (Supporting)

Also known as Goblin

Appears from the start

Darrow's oldest and fiercest friend, still the savage heart of the Howlers, now older and a family man. Loyal to the last, he remains at Darrow's side through every danger, tempering his ferocity with a hard-won weariness. The years of war have marked him, but his devotion to Darrow has never wavered.

Victra au Barca (Supporting)

Also known as Victra au Julii

Appears from the start

A bold Gold warrior and wealthy heir who long ago threw in with the revolution and married Sevro. Fierce, blunt, and fiercely protective of her family, she remains a powerful ally to Darrow and Virginia and a formidable force in her own right.

Cassius au Bellona (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The renowned swordsman and former enemy of Darrow who left the war behind to protect a child of the fallen ruling line. Living quietly in exile far from the Republic's reach, he has spent years as guardian and mentor to that boy, honoring a private code of honor while the worlds he once knew reshape themselves without him.

Lysander au Lune (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The grandson of the overthrown Sovereign, raised far from power by his guardian Cassius after the fall of the old regime. Now a thoughtful, idealistic young man, he has grown up on the fringes of a changed civilization, wrestling with the legacy of the family and order he was born into and with what he believes the worlds truly need.

Lyria (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A young Red woman from a mining clan on Mars, displaced into a squalid resettlement camp after liberation failed to bring the better life she was promised. Sharp and dutiful, weighed down by responsibility for her family, she embodies the ordinary lowColors for whom the revolution's grand victories have not yet meant freedom or safety.

Ephraim ti Horn (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A cynical Gray thief and criminal operator working the underworld of the new order, grieving a partner lost in the revolution. Bitter, clever, and out only for himself and his coin, he wants nothing to do with grand causes, though the schemes he takes on threaten to pull him back into events far larger than a simple job.

The Ash Lord (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The ruthless commander of the Gold forces still holding out against the Republic, infamous for scorched-earth cruelty during the war. Aging but implacable, he leads the remnant of the old regime and remains the Republic's great external enemy, determined to see the revolution crushed.
