Jack London Dog Stories: The Call of the Wild and White Fang recap

The collection follows two powerful dogs moving in opposite directions across the boundary between domestic life and the wild. In The Call of the Wild, Buck is stolen from California, becomes a dominant Klondike sled dog, and is rescued from abusive owners by John Thornton. When raiders kill Thornton, Buck avenges him and joins a wolf pack, becoming a legendary wild leader. White Fang begins with a wolf-dog cub born during a northern famine. Claimed by Gray Beaver, he grows isolated and fierce under attacks from other dogs, then is sold to Beauty Smith and forced to fight. Weedon Scott rescues him and patiently earns his trust. White Fang follows Scott to California, adapts to family life, and nearly dies saving Judge Scott from an escaped convict. He recovers and joins Collie beside their puppies, fully accepted as the family's Blessed Wolf.

In The Call of the Wild, Buck is stolen from Judge Miller's California estate and sold north as demand grows for sled dogs. A dog breaker teaches him the power of the club, and the couriers Perrault and François put him to work in the Klondike. Buck learns the harsh rules of trail life, challenges the lead dog Spitz, and eventually kills him. He takes command of the team and proves an exceptional leader, but repeated mail runs wear the dogs down. The team is then sold to Hal, Charles, and Mercedes, whose inexperience and cruelty push it toward destruction.

John Thornton prevents Hal from beating the collapsed Buck and keeps him when the travelers continue onto unsafe river ice and perish. Buck recovers and becomes devoted to Thornton, saving his life and performing feats that fund a remote prospecting journey. Yet he also ranges into the forest for longer periods. After Yeehat raiders kill Thornton and destroy the camp, Buck attacks them and then joins a wolf pack. He becomes its leader and a feared legend while continuing to visit the site of Thornton's death. The Call of the Wild ends with Buck fully returned to wild life.

White Fang opens during a northern famine. Bill and Henry struggle to carry a coffin toward safety while a wolf pack follows their dwindling sled team. A strangely doglike she-wolf lures their animals away one by one. Bill pursues her and is killed; Henry survives only until rescuers arrive. With food eventually more plentiful, the she-wolf, Kiche, mates with an older wolf called One Eye. She makes a den and gives birth. Hunger eliminates most of the litter, leaving one vigorous gray cub whose life is still confined to the dim shelter.

The gray cub explores beyond the den, learning through pain, prey, and predators. One Eye is killed by a lynx; Kiche later kills the lynx but is badly hurt. The cub encounters people and instinctively senses their power. Gray Beaver recognizes Kiche, once connected to his family, and claims her and the cub, naming him White Fang. Camp life brings a new form of hardship: the puppy Lip-lip repeatedly attacks White Fang, while the other dogs join in. White Fang becomes solitary, defensive, and cunning. When Kiche is traded away, his dependence on Gray Beaver deepens despite the man's stern rule.

White Fang adapts to human ownership and becomes a formidable sled leader. His isolation lets him dominate the dogs that once tormented him, and during a famine he survives alone before returning to Gray Beaver. At Fort Yukon, Beauty Smith wants him and repeatedly supplies Gray Beaver with alcohol until the man sells. White Fang resists and escapes, but Gray Beaver returns him. Beauty Smith keeps him chained, provokes him for spectators, and turns him into a professional fighting animal. Constant cruelty intensifies White Fang's hatred and leaves him almost unable to tolerate contact.

A bulldog named Cherokee nearly kills White Fang in a staged fight. Weedon Scott and his driver Matt stop the contest, force Beauty Smith to surrender the animal, and nurse White Fang. Patient treatment gradually teaches him that a person can offer care rather than pain. White Fang becomes intensely attached to Scott, defends him, and suffers when Scott leaves temporarily. When Scott prepares to return to California, White Fang escapes confinement and reaches the departing boat. Scott accepts the strength of that bond and takes him south.

At the Scott family estate in California, White Fang learns not to attack livestock or household animals and slowly wins over the family. Collie, the resident sheepdog, remains wary but later becomes his mate. Jim Hall, an escaped convict seeking revenge on Judge Scott, breaks into the house at night. White Fang attacks Hall and saves the judge, but is shot and badly injured. Despite grave wounds, he survives. Once recovered, he is brought outside to Collie and their puppies. The family calls him the Blessed Wolf, and he rests among the pups as a trusted member of a secure home.

The collection closes with White Fang established at Weedon Scott's California home. He has learned the rules of domestic life, made peace with the sheepdog Collie, and earned the family's trust. The escaped convict Jim Hall enters the house to kill Judge Scott, whose courtroom sentence he blames for his imprisonment. White Fang fights Hall and saves the household, suffering gunshot wounds and severe fractures. A surgeon gives him little chance, but he survives a long recovery. Outside, Collie leads him to their puppies. The family now calls him the Blessed Wolf, and the once-isolated fighter rests safely among his offspring. This conclusion reverses the direction of the collection's first story: Buck leaves human society for the wolf pack after Thornton's death, while White Fang travels from the wild into a lasting human and canine family.
