Sam Vimes (Protagonist)
Also known as Commander Vimes, Duke of Ankh
Appears from the start
Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch and, by marriage, Duke of Ankh, a former gutter-born street copper who rose to lead the city's police. Blunt, stubborn, and deeply suspicious of privilege and of easy patriotic answers, he treats every death as a crime to be solved and insists the law applies to everyone. Married to the wealthy Lady Sybil, he is uncomfortable with his rank and happiest working a case on his own feet.
Lord Vetinari (Supporting)
Also known as The Patrician
Appears from the start
The Patrician, absolute ruler of Ankh-Morpork, a lean, calm, and formidably intelligent man who governs by understanding exactly how people and factions behave. He rarely raises his voice and is generally several steps ahead of everyone around him.
Carrot Ironfoundersson (Supporting)
Also known as Captain Carrot
Appears from the start
A hugely tall, powerfully built man raised by dwarfs, and a captain of the City Watch. Straightforward, literal-minded, and almost universally liked, he takes the plain meaning of the law seriously and has an uncanny natural gift for leadership.
Angua von Uberwald (Supporting)
Also known as Sergeant Angua
Appears from the start
A sergeant of the City Watch who keeps private the fact that she is a werewolf, using her heightened senses on the job. Capable and level-headed, she is romantically involved with Captain Carrot.
Fred Colon (Minor)
Also known as Sergeant Colon
Appears from the start
A stout, middle-aged sergeant of the Watch who prefers a quiet shift and a comfortable routine. Loyal but unadventurous, he is prone to nervous, half-informed theorizing about the world.
Nobby Nobbs (Minor)
Also known as Corporal Nobbs
Appears from the start
A disreputable, light-fingered corporal of the Watch of such uncertain appearance that he carries an official paper certifying he is human. Scruffy and opportunistic, but reliably present when it matters.
Detritus (Minor)
Appears from the start
A troll sergeant of the City Watch, enormously strong and slower of thought in warm weather. He serves as the Watch's heavy muscle and carries a converted siege bow as a personal weapon.
Leonard of Quirm (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A gentle, brilliant inventor kept in comfortable confinement by Lord Vetinari because his designs are too dangerous to loose upon the world. He sketches war machines and impossible devices while musing happily about art, birds, and the beauty of nature.
Prince Khufurah (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A Klatchian prince who arrives in Ankh-Morpork on a diplomatic visit as tensions over the disputed island grow. Worldly and cultured, he becomes the target of an assassination attempt during his stay.
Prince Cadram (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The ruler of the Klatchian empire and Prince Khufurah's elder brother, a powerful and ambitious leader who presses Klatch's claim to the risen island and steers the two nations toward open war.
71-hour Ahmed (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A fearsome, richly robed D'reg of the Klatchian deserts who moves through the diplomatic crisis with unsettling confidence. Educated, watchful, and plainly dangerous, he appears to be shadowing events around the Klatchian visitors for reasons of his own.
