A newly promised guardian held in a cell at the Royal Court, charged with assassinating Queen Tatiana and facing execution. She did not do it, she cannot prove it, and the evidence is good enough that most of Moroi society has already decided. She is still bonded to Lissa Dragomir, still carrying the darkness spirit produces, and still in love with a man who has told her he no longer loves her back.

The last living Dragomir and one of the strongest spirit users alive, certain of Rose's innocence and willing to break the law to prove it. Because Moroi custom requires a royal family to have more than one living member before it can hold its Council seat, she has a name everyone respects and no vote at all, at the moment the Council must choose a new monarch.

A dhampir who was Strigoi and was restored to life, still distrusted by most of Moroi society and by himself. He has spent the time since his restoration refusing comfort and refusing Rose, and he remains the most capable fighter any of them know.

A royal Moroi spirit user, Rose's boyfriend, and the late queen's great-nephew. He reads auras and walks in dreams, which makes him the only person who can reach Rose wherever she is, and he is spending his family's influence and his own sobriety on keeping her alive.

Christian's aunt, who raised him after his parents turned Strigoi and were killed, and who carries scars on her face from that night. Warm, direct and widely liked, she is one of the most persistent public voices in Moroi society for teaching Moroi to fight alongside their guardians, and she has been a friend to this group since Rose and Lissa were still at school.

The murdered queen, who appears to Rose after her death because Rose is shadow-kissed and the dead can reach her. Imperious in life and no less so now, she has something to say about the Dragomir family and very little patience for being asked to explain herself.

A guardian at the Royal Court who has spent years searching for the Moroi woman he loved, a spirit user who became Strigoi rather than lose her mind. Now that a Strigoi has been restored, his search has a point to it.

A young dhampir raised among the Keepers, a community of Moroi, dhampirs and humans living outside Moroi law in the Appalachians. She is a rough, fearless fighter with no schooling in guardian conventions, and she settles disputes the way her community does, physically.

The Moroi prince who kidnapped Lissa years ago and was broken out of prison for what he knew, and who has been at large since with his half-brother Robert Doru. Dying, unrepentant and still convinced that everything he has done was the reasonable response to circumstances.

A shy Moroi girl from St. Vladimir's, several years younger than Lissa, awkward and unused to being the centre of anything. She is Eric Dragomir's daughter by a woman he was not married to, which makes her Lissa's half-sister and the second living Dragomir.
