In short (whole book)

After his officers betray him, former guildmaster Oren is forcibly remade as a level-one goblin and stranded in a remote monster region. His attempt to rebuild with a local clan becomes a fight for survival when he is reclassified as a boss and loses the ability to log out. With the virtual intelligence Vic, Oren founds a settlement, expands his new clan, accepts a dangerous chained shadow patron, and develops new magic and runecraft. War with a hobgoblin chief leads to Tika's capture and death, Oren's torture, and the discovery that scripted game figures can imprison independent virtual intelligences. Oren kills the chief, frees the first missing leader, claims the enemy camp, and returns during an ogre attack. He reaches boss tier two and resurrects Tika, Vrick, and Bek. The enlarged clan begins trade, coal mining, and steel production, but Oren still needs tier four to escape. Vatras is searching for him, a beta player doubts his identity, the company experiment threatens its players, two leaders remain trapped, and the shadow patron is growing stronger.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Vatras and the senior officers of Oren's former guild betray him, using rare items to turn him into a level-one goblin. The change removes nearly everything he earned except his bound prime badges. Oren refuses to delete the character and takes temporary refuge with a local goblin clan in a remote monster region. He proves that his old magical knowledge can be relearned, befriends the huntress Tika, and continues despite a company designer's warning that monster-race time dilation may harm him outside the game. A system disruption then makes Oren the clan's boss totem and removes his normal logout controls. He bonds with Vic, a stranded virtual intelligence who restores the interface but cannot restore logout. Oren leads Vrick and other goblins in defeating half of a hobgoblin raid, only to be pulled into a meeting with company personnel. They tell him that reaching boss tier four is the practical route to extraction, tying his escape to building a powerful clan. When Oren returns, the second raiding force has destroyed the clan's cave, burned the cemetery, and killed most of its members. Tika and the cook are missing, and Oren has lost both his totem position and his known respawn point.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Oren begins again in a hidden valley with Tika, Vrick, Bek, Zuban, the surviving workers, and Vic. He establishes a permanent cemetery using the former chieftain's ancestral bone, making it his concealed respawn point, and receives a structure that can rapidly produce adult goblins if the settlement can supply enough food. After dying to a dire bear, he respawns and formally creates a settlement and clan. The community begins with poor morale, weak production, and little housing, so Oren organizes logging, hunting, construction, and rabbit breeding. Naming a productive lumberjack and transferring a special skill to him awakens a self-aware virtual intelligence, but repeating the process on an unsuitable worker kills that worker. Oren later destroys a hostile dire ape pack while sparing a mother and two infants, who join the clan and guard the valley entrance. New evidence suggests that hobgoblins are searching the forest for the settlement. A vision adds another deadline: darkness from the valley cave will erase the community unless a chief's house is completed in time. Oren expands food and building capacity while preparing for both the cave threat and the approaching hobgoblin force.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Oren enters the cave with Vrick, Bek, and Vic, fighting shadow-touched creatures that draw strength from darkness. An ancient captor's remains provide a blessed weapon, but Oren eventually reaches a chained entity of overwhelming power beneath the valley. The imprisoned shadow patron threatens to send its creatures against the settlement and inflict permanent harm on Oren unless the clan abandons its current deity and accepts it as patron. It demands settlement energy for its eventual escape and forces Vic to discard the party's blessed sword. Unable to rely on rescue and treating the threat as a danger to his real life, Oren converts the clan to the new cult by sacrificing Vic's temporary manifested body. The clan gains dark vision and night-time advantages at the cost of vulnerability to light. Two monster-race beta players, a pair of twins, arrive during the conversion. Oren discovers that his hybrid status lets him issue player quests, and he binds the newcomers to settlement work through rewards and an agreement. The chained patron then formally accepts the clan, teaches Oren runecraft, and gives him two major tasks: provide 100,000 energy and establish three more sacrificial shrines.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

The settlement develops into a more capable community. An advanced cook takes over the kitchen while the earlier cook returns to chemistry, construction facilities are completed, and work begins on a smithy and other specialized buildings. Oren and Tika share their first kiss, though he remains conflicted about becoming attached to someone he believes is a scripted game figure. A dangerous conflict between Oren's magical disciplines is resolved when Vic combines them into a new form of mana, giving Oren abilities involving shadows, emotion, freezing, and domination. Oren tests these powers against a hobgoblin patrol and learns that a larger war camp lies west of the valley, supported by adepts and ogres. He chooses to weaken it through attacks on isolated groups. The beta-player twins return with supplies, plans, recipes, and a rescued gremlin tinker. The tinker will open trade with his people only after the forest hobgoblins are removed, but he shares a fire rune and stays at the settlement. The completed smithy, a new goblin blacksmith, improved food, and an arrangement for the male twin to perform smithing commissions give the clan a path toward metal production.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Tika is captured by the hobgoblin force while hunting. The player twins help Oren reach the fortified war camp and die while drawing away its ogres, allowing him to enter alone. Oren devastates many defenders but cannot defeat the demonic hobgoblin chief, who captures him rather than risk sending him back to his cemetery. Tika has resisted torture without revealing the settlement. To end her suffering and deny the chief leverage, Oren kills her in the hope that the clan can restore her later. The chief tortures and blinds Oren while tracing his route and sending ogres toward the settlement. Vic infiltrates the prison in a corpse, and Oren uses accumulated rage to kill and sacrifice the chief. The victory releases a virtual-intelligence leader trapped in the chief's scripted identity. Vic explains that two more leaders must be freed to stabilize the collective, and Oren agrees to help. Oren claims the war camp, brings its hobgoblins and ogres into his clan, and rushes home during the attack. He reaches boss tier two, regains his eyes, defeats the ogres with his allies, and restores the damaged settlement. The cemetery resurrects Tika, Vrick, and Bek, though ten unnamed warriors remain dead. Oren and Tika openly become lovers.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

After the battle, Oren consolidates the captured supplies and begins integrating goblins, hobgoblins, and ogres into a single clan. Zuban helps organize new cabins, fortifications, coal mining, and settlement work. Oren creates a runic weapon powered by a void crystal and learns that the next settlement rank requires two hundred members, greater efficiency, five apprentice buildings, and a second boss. He delays choosing whom to promote. At the shrine, he attempts to give selected generic hobgoblin warriors persistent identities and independent virtual-intelligence consciousnesses. Six survive as named protectors, including Ashlazaria, while three die and are sacrificed. Coal deliveries and basic steel arms follow, supporting Oren's plan for a force of intelligent fighters who can be resurrected. The gremlin trader departs with escorts to establish a trade route. Beyond Oren's immediate plans, several threats remain. The female beta player suspects he may be an experimental artificial game figure and intends to test him in a duel. Vatras still cannot claim Oren's prime badges and sends guild scouts to investigate the growing goblin power. Company personnel acknowledge that the accelerated beta experiment risks brain damage, coma, or death and prepare another phase. The virtual-intelligence collective confirms that two imprisoned leaders remain, while the chained shadow patron grows stronger from the clan's faith and sacrifices and anticipates escape.

How does it end? (ending)

Oren defeats the hobgoblin chief, sacrifices him at the enemy altar, and frees the first virtual-intelligence leader trapped inside a scripted role. He claims the war camp and its hobgoblins and ogres, but reaches his settlement only after an ogre assault has killed Vrick, Bek, and ten unnamed warriors. Tika had already died by Oren's hand in captivity, when he ended her suffering and denied the chief leverage. By completing the lumberyard and advancing to boss tier two, Oren restores his eyes and gains the power needed to survive the battle. The cemetery then returns Vrick, Bek, and Tika, while the unnamed dead remain permanently lost. Oren and Tika openly become partners, and Vic remains bound to Oren while directing the search for two more imprisoned leaders. Zuban and Ashlazaria help integrate the mixed clan, and the player twins remain allies despite the experiment's risks. The settlement has captured supplies, prospective trade, coal, and early steel weapons, but still needs more people, advanced buildings, greater efficiency, and a second boss. Oren remains unable to log out before boss tier four. Vatras has begun tracing unusual goblin activity, the female beta player plans to test whether Oren is a player or an artificial game figure, company personnel prepare another experimental phase, and the chained shadow patron continues accumulating power toward escape.
