A telepathic waitress at Merlotte's bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana, now openly the girlfriend of the vampire Bill Compton. Her grandmother's murder and the events that followed have left her known to the vampires of the area as a useful human, and she has started to be lent out and bargained over. She is stubborn about being paid and treated properly, and increasingly aware that saying no to vampires is not a simple matter.

Sookie's lover, a Civil War veteran turned vampire who lives across the cemetery from her in his restored family house. He holds a formal position among the vampires of the region as an investigator, which takes him away often and puts him under the authority of others. Devoted to Sookie in his own controlled way, he is also fully a vampire, and his obligations to his own kind come first more often than she likes.

Sookie's boss and the owner of Merlotte's, a shapeshifter who spends some nights as a collie. Since Sookie learned what he is he has been more open with her about the world of two-natured people, and he warns her that shifters and vampires are not the same kind of neighbor at all.

The short-order cook at Merlotte's, flamboyant and popular, who has lately hinted to Sookie that he has been keeping company he should not. His body is found in the parking lot of the bar, in the back seat of Detective Andy Bellefleur's car.

A Bon Temps detective from an old, impoverished local family. He wakes from a drunken night to find a body in his car and becomes the obvious suspect in the death, which is enough for him to want Sookie's help even though he does not like her or what she can do.

She is not a vampire or a shapeshifter and answers to none of their rules, and she considers the local vampires to owe her a tribute for the use of her territory.

A tiny physician who treats supernatural patients and is not herself human. She is summoned when human medicine cannot touch Sookie's injuries, is blunt to the point of rudeness, and charges her fee without sentiment.

The ancient Norse vampire who owns Fangtasia in Shreveport and holds authority over Bill and the other vampires of the area. He treats Sookie as an asset of his territory, hires her out to another city's vampires for a fee, and makes no secret of wanting her for himself.

The leader of the vampires of Dallas, an old European vampire whose modern clothes and haircut never quite disguise what he is. He hires Sookie's telepathy to find out what has become of Farrell, a member of his nest who has vanished, and he is willing to be far less delicate about humans than Bill is.

A vampire of the Dallas nest, elegant and composed, assigned to escort Sookie while she works. She lives openly with a human man and is more forthcoming with Sookie than her nest leader would prefer.

A Dallas lawyer and Isabel's human companion, quiet and careful. He is sent along with Sookie as a human escort on the theory that two humans together will attract less attention, and he talks with her frankly about what it costs to love a vampire.

A bellman at the vampire-friendly hotel in Dallas who, like Sookie, hears other people's thoughts and has spent his life hiding it. Frightened when Sookie recognizes him for what he is, he is the first person she has ever met who shares her gift.

The public face of the Fellowship of the Sun, a fast-growing anti-vampire church with a Dallas headquarters built like a campus. Smiling, media-trained and utterly certain, he preaches that vampires are an abomination, and the Fellowship's welcome to newcomers is warmer than it is safe.
