One of the original colonists of a distant world, usually called Sam. He opposes the technologically enhanced elite who rule later generations as Hindu gods and control access to new bodies. A strategist, skeptic, and accomplished user of mind-transfer technology, he adopts the role of the Buddha as a weapon against their monopoly.

Heaven's brilliant weapons maker and master of the machinery that transfers minds between bodies. Austere, proud, and personally formidable, Yama helps recover Sam from his long disembodied exile because the established gods face a danger their old order cannot contain.

A former god and loyal associate of Sam who has been punished by rebirth in the body of an ape. Tak assists Yama's effort to call Sam back and serves as a link between the returning rebel and the changed world below Heaven.

One of Heaven's ruling immortals, gifted with powers associated with darkness and illusion. Ratri is sent to deal with the religious challenge Sam creates, but approaches both divine politics and Sam himself with an independence that makes her difficult for the other gods to command.

The sovereign of the celestial city and formal head of the self-made Hindu pantheon. Brahma defends the gods' authority over reincarnation and technological progress, treating Sam's movement as a political threat as much as a religious one.

A member of Heaven's old elite and one of the technically skilled First. Kubera's personal loyalty is stronger than his attachment to the pantheon's public unity, making him a valuable but politically exposed ally.

A god whose enhanced powers let him shape appearances and enter minds. Mara uses spectacle and psychological attack in Heaven's campaign against Sam's followers, embodying the regime's ability to turn advanced faculties into religious authority.

A powerful energy-being from the planet's native population, confined with others of his kind in the place humans call Hellwell. Taraka is dangerous, mocking, and capable of possessing human minds, but Sam bargains with him for help against Heaven.

An original colonist who rejects the Hindu identities adopted by his peers and remains committed to an austere form of Christianity. From a distant stronghold he builds a technologically armed following opposed to both Heaven and Sam's new faith.

A feared member of the pantheon whose engineered abilities and martial skill support Heaven's rule. Kali's history with Yama gives their political opposition an intimate dimension, but she appears as a determined defender of the celestial order.
