The fourth entry in the Undying Mercenaries series finds legionnaire James McGill entangled in a political crisis after a Galactic inspector orders him and several officers to kill themselves to protect Earth from destruction; McGill shoots the inspector instead. With Earth's standing before the wider Galactic order thrown into doubt and tension building with a rival species called the cephalopods, McGill's legion is deployed to defend a distant, unclaimed world from cephalopod expansion. Amid the deployment he wins promotion to veteran through a rigged combat trial, trains with an allied unit's armored cavalry, and confronts the fallout of an old relationship as the invasion force reaches its hostile, frozen destination and encounters signs of an unknown native population.
