In short (whole book)
Arlo turns the relocated city into the recognized nation of Closetland, builds institutions for its freed and displaced population, and commits Fortune's Folly to Operation Forest. At a world summit he shares intelligence about avatars and monoliths, then releases records implicating powerful figures. In the forest, the party survives political hostility and a blood-borne Unifier attack, with Xim's reforged cleansing becoming the decisive defense. Arlo's bond with Grotto also gives him anomalous Golemancy and draws System scrutiny. A forced Labyrinth then traps the expedition while protecting a critical filter from the United. After defeating a powerful United, the group encounters Orexis and another avatar, who claim the unresponsive Etja as their child and pursue Varrin for a specter fragment. Arlo survives a specialist-led kidnapping attempt with Shog's help and reunites with Xim, Varrin, Grotto, and comatose Etja. The United have compromised most Labyrinth assets. A separate ruling council dies under an apparent external influence before the United leader enters and pressures its surviving crown to govern for the United.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Arlo Xor'Drel leads Fortune's Folly and rules the extradimensional realm of Closetland. His party includes Varrin, Xim, Etja, and Nuralie, while the Delve Core Grotto remains bonded to him as familiar and adviser. Arlo's unusual dimensional, defensive, and crafting abilities let him move people and resources through his realm, but also place him at the center of conflicts that cross national and System boundaries. Closetland has taken responsibility for a displaced city and people freed from Littan control, leaving Arlo to turn rescue into durable government. The party also knows that avatars and a hostile unifying power pose threats beyond conventional Delvers or armies. Relations with the Littan Empire and Hiwardian powers are therefore both useful and politically strained. As this volume begins, Arlo must strengthen himself, secure a future for the relocated population, and decide how closely his young realm should cooperate with larger nations against dangers that remain poorly understood.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Arlo completes a demanding defensive training cycle with a Littan major. By combining segmented shields with portals, teleportation, and thrown-weapon techniques, he reaches major Shields and Mystical Magic milestones and chooses new protection and emergency-shielding options. He then negotiates with the local Littan count, who releases the Empire's remaining claims over the relocated city, its salvage, and the people still living there. Arlo withholds a commitment to the proposed forest campaign while seeking fair access to useful training knowledge and help reuniting freed residents with enslaved relatives. Closetland begins practical reconstruction: Nuralie develops self-repairing prosthetics, Xim organizes spiritual and mental-health support, and Varrin helps recover building materials. The recovery is interrupted when Arlo finds a malformed infiltrator beneath the city. The agent serves the Unifier and has distributed tissue and soul connections through hosts. When those links activate, Varrin, Xim, and Nuralie collapse as growths form near their skulls. Arlo and Etja destroy the infiltrator and the others recover, but the party learns that apparently weak agents can hide lethal fragments in many people. They begin considering how Xim's cleansing magic might be adapted against the threat.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
The party reviews new evolutions and equipment. Arlo gains large reserve shielding, stronger battlefield control, and specialized defensive options. Grotto and Throne use soul work and System techniques to give Grotto an organic body, while the numbered System Cores disagree over the petition and its consequences. Grotto and Throne also begin work on creation Delves, though more Delve Cores and a permanent reality anchor are required. Closetland's council considers displaced magical peoples, diplomatic gifts, dangerous intelligence, prosthetic production, education, mental health, and an ordinary-citizen military equipped with adapted rifles and advanced armor. Valti becomes a key military adviser. The council plans creation-Delve candidates who will owe fealty to Closetland without surrendering all control over their builds. It also chooses a crafting-oriented national benefit. After debating the Littan request for help in the forest, Fortune's Folly agrees to join the campaign for skill growth, intelligence about the avatars, and possible evidence around the monoliths. A world summit invitation gives Arlo a second arena for that work. During the preparation period, Arlo and Nuralie begin testing whether extreme poison and spectral exposure can improve his resistances, while Closetland continues organizing support for its traumatized population.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Arlo establishes Closetland's permanent reality anchor at his Foundation residence, satisfying a key requirement for its planned creation Delve. He also helps the dragon princess evaluate recruits for a new party. The captive beastmaster earns a place through close coordination with an incorporeal companion, and Valti demonstrates that his spectral composite can survive destruction of its visible golem frame. Shog's status as a nonhuman Delver provides precedent for Valti's eligibility. Elsewhere, a System addendum removes C'thons from a blacklist amid signs of corrupted records and a hostile imitation of System Core 2. Shog then appears within a collapsing imperial prison complex while hunting a brood king that controls the Stone Lord. He defeats the Stone Lord's champion without killing him, destroys the enthralled ruler and guards, catches the brood king during its incorporeal escape, and consumes its core. Shog leaves with brood-king authority and an apparently important sword. The death should release the people under the brood king's direct control, but Shog's new authority creates a further unresolved power beyond Closetland's immediate state-building and the coming forest operation.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Recruitment for the dragon princess's party continues. Varrin's older brother demonstrates stealth, tangible illusions, disguises, and the ability to conceal a group from Arlo's enhanced senses. An archer candidate recounts severe divine training and displays power far beyond her nominal level by erasing an armored test target with a bone arrow. Her weaknesses and religious history remain concerns, but Arlo, Xim, and Nuralie judge her by present conduct rather than affiliation alone. The candidates identify a broad-level forest Labyrinth as a possible path for bringing the new party toward parity. Meanwhile, about five thousand freed people, refugees, rescued Delvers and families, immigrants, orphans, and members of Arlo's tribe gather under Governess Lena. They pledge fealty, making Arlo formally responsible for them. The System recognizes Closetland as a nation with Pending as its capital and grants Arlo Statecraft. He chooses an evolution that provides additional governing attention and tangible Mystic Magisters able to carry out informed public duties. Closetland now has recognition, a permanent anchor, a large pledged population, and the beginnings of a Delver-development program, though its industry and defense plans still need people and resources.
Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)
At the international summit, Arlo presents what Fortune's Folly knows about the larger threat. He describes avatars as deific amalgamations connected to Delver ascension, warns that their enemy seeks to merge people and existence into a single entity, and urges nations to protect likely monolith sites. He also releases the costly method that can raise a low-level Delver's trainable attributes without gaining levels. Arlo then distributes anonymous records alleging misconduct by officials and nobles across several realms, turning the summit into a political crisis and raising fears about the security of slate technology. Arlo, Nuralie, and Etja escape through wards using his portals. A foreign God-King later recognizes dangerous properties in Arlo's amulet and intercepts an incorporeal weapon aimed at the apparent Littan Empress. With the Hiwardian king, she discovers that the target is an illusion or substitute rather than the true Empress. The captured assassin is constrained by a psychic oath. She utters the name Mercy before the oath activates, survives the resulting collapse, and falls comatose. The identity of Mercy, the sponsor of the attack, and the purpose of the false Empress all remain unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
The released records make Fortune's Folly internationally prominent and invite divinations, curses, propaganda, and assassination attempts. The party nevertheless reports for Operation Forest at its embassy in the rebuilt Littan frontier fortress. Rival military factions initially surround the building. The Littan Grand General explains that resentment comes from the end of slavery, the earlier naval blockade, and allegations in the released files, while other soldiers credit the party for helping the Empire. He offers regulated public challenges as a way to settle the question of their participation. Arlo defeats several opponents, Xim survives a dangerous opening strike and wins her duel, Varrin ends his matches with precise disabling attacks, and Nuralie defeats a tracking contest by substituting a soulless decoy. The demonstrations establish the party's strength and make continued opposition less acceptable under Littan military custom. A resentful major becomes primary staff officer to the company's commander. He blames Arlo for deaths connected to the blockade, yet is also responsible for the party's security and welfare. Grotto's display makes clear that the major cannot match their power, but the personal grievance remains active as the forest deployment begins.
Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)
The Littan force enters the forest and establishes layered defensive perimeters. Arlo's group crosses a dimensional hazard and a Smithing Dungeon, where curse-bearing roots force each traveler to craft and sacrifice a mana-woven item. Arlo gains several Smithing levels before the group establishes camp. A mass attack by small creatures then hits multiple positions. Some attackers explode and spread blood that causes paralysis, seizures, and unconsciousness. Investigation shows that the substance is foreign tissue carried by selected animals rather than their own blood. Soul Sight links it to the same kind of distributed invader encountered beneath Closetland. Standard cleansing fails, and victims can be consumed from within until their corpses become puppets that spread further tissue. Xim's reforged Cleanse is the exception. Her cleansing fire destroys infected material throughout a camp without harming unaffected allies, and she repeats the treatment elsewhere. Etja clears forest around another camp to improve its defenses, while Arlo and Grotto support the fighting and evacuation. Xim's cleansing establishes a workable defense against the infection, but the Littan camps remain under pressure and the Unifier's broader body and purpose remain unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)
The party converts Xim's unique cleansing into a practical campaign resource. Arlo, Xim, Etja, Grotto, and a draconic craft specialist use an entry-level woodworking challenge to produce wands from poor local materials, giving Littan healers a distributed countermeasure against the Unifier's tissue. During the work, Arlo attempts to access Grotto's Golemancy through their soul bond. Animating a small doll triggers a dissociative experience associated with the memories of a mortal golem-maker, though the identity and history behind those impressions remain uncertain. When Arlo returns to himself, the doll is independently active and the System records an impossible thirteenth intrinsic skill despite his twelve-slot limit. An administrator arranges for System Core 1's records to be purged, leaving persistent errors and marking Arlo for scrutiny. Arlo and Grotto can still use and advance the shared skill. Arlo completes the cleansing-wand order, reaches new Wand-making and Smithing milestones, and gains techniques for instantly summoned equipment, linked heirloom sets, and protective warding through crafted items. With the infection contained but not eliminated, the Littan force prepares to leave emergency defense and push farther into the forest's combat dungeons.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
Arlo finishes a Dreamforged heirloom staff that strengthens shielding, supports allies, and improves his sonic attacks, although broad damage transfer could place a heavy burden on him. He, Varrin, Grotto, a Littan officer, and a heavy-armored sergeant advance through the Heavy Armor dungeon. After crossing armor-piercing projectile fields and a spatial zone where movement and teleportation are hazardous, Arlo reaches another skill evolution and improves his protection against spiritual, mental, and divine threats. The group then enters a capacity-filled Labyrinth during a violent spatial shift. Grotto determines that it expanded around occupied territory, violating the usual requirement of choice. Through an anomalous System Call, Arlo learns that emergency code forced the expansion because an enemy is converting a System-critical object called the filter. In the ruined Blunt Weapons dungeon, the group confronts a grade-30 United whose telekinetic force, adaptation, and ability to transfer conditions make it exceptionally difficult to kill. Arlo evacuates wounded Littans, then he and Varrin survive the enemy's destructive final transformation with Grotto's help. The United dies, Arlo regenerates severe injuries, and the party reaches an obelisk where they find Etja and claim rewards. The Labyrinth crisis is only beginning.
Story so far - through chapter 68 (this book)
Outside the Labyrinth, the Cerulean dragon ruler demands entry, arguing that the United and the monolith must be destroyed even if every trapped Delver dies with them. Arlo refuses to open a portal. After an older being condemns her plan, she spreads mana threads throughout Closetland, leading Arlo to fear that any portal could let her exploit his route into the Labyrinth. Inside, Xim and another imperial party reach the obelisk, but portal disruption prevents the expected exit. Etja suddenly becomes unresponsive without any ordinary injury or controller. Orexis and another avatar crash into the grove and call her their child. Orexis consumes the imperial sergeant, while the second avatar devastates the withdrawing Littans and makes lesser beings from damaged life. Xim creates a dreamscape that protects and heals Arlo as he struggles against Orexis's disabling attacks. Varrin wounds the avatar, but Orexis recognizes that Varrin carries a fragment of its lost specter and attempts to reclaim it. Arlo joins with Xim as she manifests an Eye above her scepter. The party cannot defeat the avatars directly, cannot safely use Closetland's portals, and must escape while protecting the unconscious Etja.
Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)
Arlo, Varrin, Xim, Grotto, and unconscious Etja flee through a third-layer passage while the avatars pursue them. When Xim collapses from the strain, Arlo sends her and Varrin along one route and takes Etja and Grotto through another to draw pursuit away. Grotto animates Etja's armor so she can move, and the smaller group escapes another direct attack. They encounter animal handlers investigating the unnatural abandonment of forest habitats. One secretly powerful handler stays behind with a giant reptilian familiar to delay the avatars. A Littan survival specialist then uses an Objective Tracker to guide Arlo, Grotto, Etja, and an Iskarim handler toward an obelisk. Two United agents are draining it. The Iskarim kills one, the other escapes with its device, and Grotto repairs enough of the obelisk for the group to claim its remaining rewards. Arlo gains a major Intelligence evolution that strengthens allied attacks through his aura. The Iskarim takes a separate path to look for survivors, while the others choose a route toward a possible Dungeoneering Dungeon. The selected platform malfunctions and displaces Arlo's group through an abnormal transit.
Story so far - through chapter 76 (this book)
Inside the blue flame's pocket realm, a foreign general and allied Delvers attempt to take Arlo hostage until he grants their candidates access to the costly mist procedure. A hostile Hiwardian noble supports the demand, and the absent Littan specialist appears to have arranged the trap. The ambushers threaten to release an elder dragon into the wider Labyrinth if Arlo escapes through Closetland. They assume his strongest summon is unavailable, but Arlo calls Shog into the sealed realm. Shog reveals his grade-27 brood-king form and kills the noble. While Shog occupies the remaining force, Arlo withstands the general's layered magic and launches a barrage of empowered homing hammers that apparently destroys him. Arlo and Shog eliminate the other attackers. They find the Littan specialist wounded, and he admits the betrayal before pretending to die. Shog kills him. Arlo refuses the blue flame's unclaimed obelisk because the realm appears outside normal System control, then uses a revealed Dungeoneering platform to leave. He reunites with Grotto, Varrin, Xim, and Etja, who remains comatose. A System warning reports that the United have compromised nearly every Labyrinth asset, including Delve Cores and an architect, leaving the filter crisis and escape unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 77 (this book)
The closing scene shifts to a separate ruling council already weakened by the disappearance of its remaining Delver parties. With its military unable to respond effectively, the government faces collapse. One council member sees the third layer become unnaturally empty and then watches the other councillors die under an apparent external influence. The lone surviving crown resists the compulsion. Mercy, now seen as a wolven woman, enters beside the colossal leader of the United. Rather than simply destroy the realm, the leader pressures the survivor to govern it on the United's behalf. This takeover confirms that the enemy's campaign extends beyond the trapped Labyrinth and its threatened filter. Arlo has survived the specialist's betrayal and reunited with Grotto, Xim, Varrin, and the unconscious Etja, but Orexis and the second avatar remain active, several separated allies have uncertain fates, and the United control or threaten much of the Labyrinth's infrastructure. Closetland remains recognized and growing, yet its portals may be exposed to the Cerulean dragon ruler's mana threads, and its unfinished defenses now face an enemy capable of converting System assets and replacing national leadership.
How does it end? (ending)
Arlo, Grotto, Xim, Varrin, and the still-comatose Etja reunite after surviving the Labyrinth separation and the specialist's attempted betrayal. Shog kills the traitor after helping Arlo eliminate the foreign force that tried to take him hostage. The avatars remain alive and interested in Etja and Varrin, while the fate of several allies separated during the crisis is unknown. The System reports that the United have compromised nearly all Labyrinth assets, including Delve Cores and an architect. Their agents are also draining obelisks, and the filter that prompted the Labyrinth's emergency expansion remains threatened. Closetland is a recognized nation with a capital and growing population, but its defense, industry, and creation-Delve program remain unfinished. The Cerulean dragon ruler's mana threads may still endanger its portals. In the final scene, Mercy accompanies the United leader into a ruined council chamber. The leader coerces the sole surviving crown into ruling for the United, showing that the enemy is replacing governments as well as seizing System infrastructure.
